The first is like the old Mordheim, but with wizards exploring a city destroyed by a magical cataclysm, accompanied by mercenaries. The second is a historical Viking-era skirmish with free rules written by the Little Wars TV group. It would also be a lot of fun to see a Bolt Action campaign played out😁

Not as detailed or as accurate as Avalon Hill's Squad Leader tactical game system, but in many ways WAY COOLER optics wise. One thing that seems to be missing (accuracy/real life wise) is a reaction system that allows non-phase pieces to fire/move in reaction to events or enemy fire in a limited way (short distance movements/ less accurate reaction fire). But obviously, the game omits this play function in order to speed up game play for a more ACTION oriented game instead of bogging the game down in what most people would consider "nit-picking" details. The game's use of a large number of specialized dice is also a way to cut down on the number of, and frequent use of damage/damage effects charts that are needed for a FULL game (Avalon Hill provided modifying rules to cut down on the details and realism while using fewer, basic six sided dice. I also notice that in Bolt Action, damage probability is more severe and certian most of the time than in AH Squad Leader. What would have been a nice touch is the addition of a simple "top-down periscope view where pictures of the action can be taken at the "miniature" level POV. Before smart phones, a few games from Japan (such as the Dougram tactical mecha game used actual periscopes - but reversed - to allow players to get a miniature's POV. Players had to be careful about moving the periscope around the gaming area, but I always found it a cool, unique feature. Today, combined with modern digital editing technology, any video of a miniatures battle game can be recorded and displayed in a more exciting manner. But that's just my bit of two cents on the subject.

I have four countries myself from almost 6,500 points Germans with over 20 various vehicles to my 5,500 point Soviets with around 15 different vehicles. Then my 3,000 point mid to late war US Army with 12 vehicles then my newest army which I totally got by accident as I won an Island Assault starter box at a local tournament with my Japanese at around 1,500 points with what I have bought to compliment the 24 Japanese infantry that come in that box. My nastiest things is my anti aircraft units as they just totally lay down a lot of shots out of a single unit like my American M-15 with a heavy autocannon and twin heavy machine guns (8 dice) or my German SD Kfz 251/21 Drilling with triple light autocannons (6 dice shots).

Great to see another board game video! Bolt-Action looks like a fun WWII war miniatures game. It’s funny how AngryJoe’s experience with the Sherman vs. the Panzerfaust mirrored the reality of the War in Ukraine: There are countless videos online of overhyped Russian battle tanks, which cost several million dollars, getting destroyed by Javelin anti-tank missiles, which only cost 250K. AJ should’ve taken a cue from the military experts and used infantry to protect his tanks, instead of charging his tank forward. Regardless, it was entertaining to watch! 😂

@5IvanDrago5 Жыл бұрын
Best board game ever, only problem I had with Axis and Allies was if you play the traditional game. The entire game is either won or lost on the Germans first turn. Either the Germans put themselves in position to eliminate the Russian in three turns or they get bogged down in Russia. If they get bogged down and England is able to assist the Russians and the Russians help secure America in China. It is game over. We would always switch and have America allied with Germany, but the Americans only got half their money for the first three turns. That always made for a fun time. GREAT GAME

So about Joe's bad luck with the tank/antitank stuff about 26 min into this... that's the reality of WW2. A tank that isn't properly supported by infantry is generally pretty easy to destroy. But if it IS properly supported... it can be devastating. Bolt Action is meant to be about platoons of infantry, so tanks aren't really the focus - although they can be fun to field. WW2 didn't have the wide range of personal weapons, most infantry were armed with rifles. You didn't have the equivalent of a lascannon and a plasma gun in each tactical squad like you'd see in 40k. Bolt Action soldiers are more like real world soldiers (than, say Space Marines in 40k)... if you run out in the open, you're going to get shot and you're going to die. You need to carefully use cover to advance (and where Americans don't take the move/fire penalty on most of their small arms, you always want to be moving with them!). Also note that the Soviets can take Panzerfausts too... they loot them off dead Germans! And the Soviets have access to special dogs that are trained to run underneath enemy tanks... and these dogs basically have land mines strapped to their backs. The Soviets don't screw around! As for campaign rules, it's easy enough to come up with a map system of your own but if you're like me and you're lazy, Warlord came out with a "Combined Arms" system last year. It includes rules to integrate other side games they make like Victory At Sea and Blood Red Skies. Last thing, since 40k got mentioned... a handful of the designers at Warlord Games are former GW designers from back in the day. So Bolt Action shoudl feel pretty familiar if you've played 40k (which I know Joe has). And then the designers for Star Wars Legion have admitted that they "were inspired" by Bolt Action when they designed Legion. The game is definitely addicting though. I started it back around 2015 when GW pissed me off with its End Times stuff in Fantasy. I started with Soviets... now I also have Germans (a mix of heer, grenaidere, and FJ), Americans (a platoon of 82nd AB and a platoon modeled on the mechanized unit I actually served in in the US Army in the 90s), early war French (they're not as bad as the jokes make them out to be) and Maquis (basically pissed off Frenchmen who rebelled against the German occupation but weren't part of the Free French).
