No animal industry attracts more criticism than research, where emotive images of lab rats, vivisection and cosmetic testing rub up against medical breakthroughs, genetic research and treatment for disease.

There is no relevant difference(s) between Humans and the rest of the animal kingdom that we use as justification for denying them life, that most of us would consider moral if the same standards were applied to Humans (that is to say they are double standards). The most common example being we often use the intelligence gap (in one way or another such as calling it by different words like self awareness) between animals & Humans as justification for us bringing them into the world to suffer for our pleasure, yet they would never consider this justification valid for killing a Human of equal intelligence to the animal (whose intelligence, or rather lack there of was given as justification for killing them). This argument (known as NTT / name the trait) applies just as well to any of the justifications given (which are all variants of "killing animals is justified because of": intelligence tho, nature tho, species tho, might makes right tho, god tho, somebody else will tho).

So you're saying that if you came across a trapped gorilla and a trapped mouse and could only save one, there'd be literally no way of choosing which.
@chrismagee333
@chrismagee333 Жыл бұрын
@Jonah Whale But the relevant difference is the same in both cases. i.e. humans gorillas and mice are all sentient mammals capable of suffering and having interests but the capacity for a richer inner life (including the ability to suffer in ways the mouse cannot) puts both the gorilla and human above the mouse. For this reason, gorillas are not used in animal research so it's not a strawman - it's a demonstration of the relevant differences not captured by OP's overly reductionist argument.

I havent had any info on this subject for as long as 40 years when as a young student by that time and a bunch of twelve students of the Manchesters universities had hold a protest meeting in front of the gates of UMIST university having posters with photographs showing clearly animal tortured in the name of science and research for big industrial uses in order to get the common opinion concerned on it. I wonder if you can inform me on whats the established by laws situation by now on this subject in Britain and European Community.

@nti_4399
@nti_4399 2 жыл бұрын
@Jonah Whale Humans have a much longer life-span than mice, more complex thoughts and emotions, so how can they be lesser? And no other species is more adaptable than humans, because we can adapt to our environment culturally within a generation, without having to wait for evolutionary pressure and genetic changes. The only reason you're even wondering if it's ethical to use mice in research is because you have a far more complex brain capable of thinking about morals and ethics. The mice wouldn't care, it's just biology that each species looks out for their own survival, and right now we need to use animals in research in order to cure diseases and save human lives. We eat animals anyways, and they live in far worst conditions that animals in labs. Maybe one day we'll be able to move away from all of this, but factory farming is far more unethical and killing animals on a scale not even comparable with scientific research.

As many people need to be against animal testing as possible, no gatekeeping. We definitely need to move away from it and use other models, and I'm not saying that's just gonna happen overnight. Right now at least in the US it's not even possible for a drug to be approved without being tested on animals.

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 "I think what's really challenging for people in our movement is that we don't seem to understand that 'human' is as much a construct as anything else. 'Human' is a construct in the same way that 'whiteness' is a construct. It is literally something created to create a division between us as superior & animal as inferior and then it's leveraged as we said in the beginning to oppress 'animal'-animals but also other 'human' animals, as needed. I see what we're trying to do in the movement is humanise animals & I think what we need to focus more on is deconstructing 'human'. So that we can understand that we are on the same plain as animals. I just think that shifts the paradigm about how we think about & approach our animal comrades. If we can see ourselves as existing within the same eco system & not being above it & not having our position be to manage it then we can start to understand how it isn't hypocritical to talk about animal rights & also defend that animal consumption that might happen. But if we always have this idea 'we have these brains so that's why shouldn't eat these animals cause we're too smart' - well, there are other animals as intelligent as us. & also what are we considering intelligence? Again we're having this very human exceptionalism lens on this whole thing & saying that that because we evolved to have these brains we should not now participate in nature. But that's actually the root cause of what got us here, is us always feeling that we were above nature, that it was ours to manage or exploit."
