Also, lycaons are extremely intelligent creatures. They develop specific hunting strategies for different preys and they manage to secure a kill way more often than bigger predators like lions and hyenas (they manage to get a kill 60% to 90% of the time while most predators barely manage to reach 25%). At some point they were hunted for this reason. Because it was though that they hunted for sport rather than for sustenance.

The worst part of about the guy who tried to sneak into the zoo but ended up in the tiger enclosure, he was there with his family that day, misjudged how much it would cost and realized he didn’t have enough for everyone so paid for the mom and kids to go in without him and decided to sneak in and meet up with them once he was in. His family saw it happen.

IIRC zebras cause more injuries to keepers every year than tigers because people drop their guard around them and treat them like the domesticated animal they look like in a way they wouldn't with something more obviously dangerous. Of course, zebras *have* to be violent unpredictable assholes because they live on the savannah surrounded by lions and wild dogs and and hyenas and leopards and a hundred other things that eat zebras. And Casual Geographic didn't explicitly explain it but the woman who got beaten by a gorilla was effectively picking a fight with him every day. Staring at him (meeting his gaze) and baring your teeth (smiling) day after day? Yeah that's about as explicit a challenge to a silverback as you can get. The gorilla probably tried to warn her off with a threat display a couple of times the days before the attack but clearly went completely over her head.

Animals in zoos aren't just kept in cages anymore and *haven't* been for *decades.* They've got extensive habitats designed to simulate their natural environments connected to enclosures where they can get away from the annoying humans. Zoos go to *incredible* lengths to keep their animals healthy and happy. They also often rehabilitate sick and injured animals from the wild. There's a zoo about an hour from where I live that has an exhibit mostly dedicated to Canada geese with 'angel wing' with plaques on what causes it and what can be done to prevent it. (Basically, don't feed them lots of bread at the park.) Zoos also provide a place where kids can see animals from all over the world, learn about them, and *inspire* them to take care of the animals *and* then environment. Zoos are *awesome.* Some of the most memorable, wonderful memories from my childhood involved visits to the zoo.

And while that is all wonderful- there are many downsides to zoos. As mentioned in the video- there’s a zoo local to us that has tigers kept in an enclosure that is entirely too small. These tigers have only a few feet to get out of the sun if they want, and they only have one wooden bench- nothing else. That’s just one zoo. While zoos do many important things, Im not sure all of the animals think that zoos are awesome

@@gnarlynikki I think the really problem is the accessibility normal people have to exotic animals. There is no regulation on what is called a zoo, so if somebody buys a tiger and has people pay to come see it, that is technically a zoo. The real zoos out there get discredited because of this even though programs like the AZA do yearly checks to keep animal welfare up to date. So yeah there are disgusting “zoos” out there, but that does not mean that accredited zoos are the same thing. It would be like comparing a puppy mill and a humane society just because they both have dogs in them.

I'd never let my cat outside where I live. My last cat snuck past me when I was leaving and while I was chasing her down to get her back inside a hawk swooped down and snatched her. She was too fat for it to carry away but it still did a lot of damage to her insides and they got infected to the point that the vet had to put her down. I didn't want to lose her but I also didn't want her to suffer. I still miss that fat drama queen.

I love the informal policy of only trading animals for other animals so as not to put any monetary value on them that would encourage poaching. Moon jellyfish are the "reserve currency" of this system. If you don't have valuable enough animals to trade for a high value one you want, you can use moon jellies to make up the difference. It seems this works because they produce enough offspring that there's no risk of a jellyfish shortage, but raising the babies up to adulthood is difficult enough that there isn't a risk of jellyfish "inflation" either.

There are plenty of cases of zoo animals remaining at zoos even after they get out. I worked at a zoo where the Jaguar got out for an entire 12 hours in the night and all he did was wander around the zoo and kill a couple of the foxes that live there. The fence around the zoo was only about 10 feet which he could’ve easily climbed, but he never did because he wasn’t trying to escape or anything. Now before anyone says anything, this was an easy credited zoo not your backyard private variety.

I do agree with you guys about the zoos and such in a lot of cases, but there are a lot of animals that are in zoos because of injuries that would get them killed in the wild. A perfectly healthy wild animal shouldn't be held captive like that, I agree, but if they only keep unhealthy animals in the zoo the mating programs would produce some really screwed up offspring. It's a very tough issue.

To answer your comment/question about why they do it, think death by cop. I used to work in the medical field in hospitals, for the most part not bad, but during the holidays we dreaded it. The reason was simple, during the holidays peoples depression skyrockets to the point of self deletion. In their minds to get around an express ticket to hell for doing so they will try and force someone/ thing to remove them from life. I.E. cop, wild animals, on coming traffic. It’s sad but their view is they want out but don’t want to go to hell so have someone/ thing do it for them. Keep in mind, that only applies to the lady that jumped in with the bears. For the other ones…….they where just dumb. No matter what someone always looses

Studies, interviews, and history tells us that in many cases, suicide was an impulse decision by someone pushed to the brink. I'm not judging - any of us can get there,, and be thankful if you've never been pushed that far into hell. Interviews, you ask? With survivors, heh. As for history, I'm kind of half-asleep so this is kind of vague, but there was this stove being sold in Britain which made it really easy to shove your head in there and sleep your way to eternal rest. They changed the design, which made it harder to gas yourself. Removing the easy availability of death reduced the number of suicides. So that poor woman was just on a hair trigger when that furry promise of annihilation hoves into view. Really google? You don't know the word 'hoves'? It's in the Webster dictionary.

@@Toastybees And how do we do that? Zoos are *great,* partially because they often double as hospitals for sick and injured wildlife. They also provide opportunities for studying behavior that we wouldn't be able to see in the wild because it happens underground/underwater/whatever. We're able to provide safety that the animals wouldn't get in the wild, too. We're still learning a lot about how to keep them happy and healthy, but we *are* learning. The more we learn, the more we're able to do for those in the wild. Zoos also provide a place for kids to see animals up close that they wouldn't be able to otherwise, fostering a love of animals and a desire to learn.

Preserves don’t stop poachers from sneaking in and killing the animals. I know the rangers and wardens try their damnedest. But there only so much they could do to be everywhere and protect all animals in the preserve. Zoo’s should be inspected constantly to make sure safety standards are high enough to keep idiots from killing themselves or others. Anyone who causes the animals distress or doesn’t listen to the keepers when they are doing something that provoked the animals should be warned and forced to leave if they don’t listen. The could come back once and if they haven’t learned then add them to a banned for life list.

Even more stupid because that was in Germany. You know, that one country with a generous welfare system compared to the rest of the world. Also, teachers in Germany get a decent salary. Between 3.5k and 5.5k a month. Meaning, the first year of unemployment nets you 60% of what you earned on average during your career. And one year is more than enough to find a new job, especially if you have experience in that field. It took me 3 months, and I was lazy about it. I wasn't doing shit for 2 months, just being lazy.

I'm just gonna put it this way, for how "intelligent" we as humans are, we seem to have an extremely bad habit of not learning our lessons. In this case, I think anybody should be able to see why stupidity and wild animals don't mix. I also think its about damn time we start holding the dumbasses responsible for their stupidity rather than making the zoo responsible. There are some species in zoo's that are endangered, and if it came to that point the zoo would have no choice but to kill an endangered animal to save the person, even though dumbasses with more ego than sense are really starting to overpopulate. From an evolutionary standpoint humans have gone unchallenged as the dominant species on the planet for so long that natural selection hasn't been a factor for a while, and the result is the dumbasses mentioned in the video

I feel like everyone everybody always forgets the conservation efforts of zoos. Especially with Endangered species. Infact a feel like zoos have a bad rap. The truth of the matter is that most zoo animals today (key word there) live better lives then most of us. animals in the wild live short violent lives where they FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL every minute. But muh animals behind bars or some shit. Like we're still living in the victorian era.

Agreed. It's a mixed bag, like everything we do. I live near the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens, and even got to visit three times in my youth. Even my last visit, during college studying biology, it was a magical place. The rest of the world knows it for Harambe, but their breeding programs and conservation biomes are incredible. (The "Botanical Gardens" part that always gets overlooked, they have plants AND their biomes [often mixed into the animal habitats of similar regions, but not always due to obvious reasons])...Yeah, they have to make money, but when I went there you had the option of just wandering around of course, or if you were in a school visit or with SUPER COOL PARENTS WHO KNEW YOU WERE a crazy scientist girl, you could join in any center's "Experience" and get to talk with caretakers, SCIENTISTS, and even interact with some animals. Even to this day and I'm forty two now, it was always clear to me that you could feel the kind of environment they were working towards. Never going to be perfect, and I'm not making excuses, some animals don't do enclosure well at all, almost always for mental reasons. But the lengths some of Cincy's endangered species programs have gone are incredible. Even our new darling Fiona. That all said... we can do better. I fully understand the reasoning behind having open-air enclosures, they're more for the animals' sakes than the public realizes, but I do think they need to be hardened more. Put steel and plexiglass up with gaps *NO* body is going to get through. If we're serious about this being for "both of our sakes," then that's the very least we can do, whatever it does to the "numbers." (A slight aside, the tortoise made me think of this: I forget when/where this was, there was a documentary on like a decade ago, and a crew was down on the islands with some of the tortoises, and they uh.... somehow "interfered" with the male's attempt at wooing his girl. Something that had apparently and obviously taken a long while and a lot of effort. THIS TORTOISE, my boy was SO PISSED he followed the entire crew back angrily, stalk/stomping half a klick after them. One of the most tragic and hilarious things I'd ever seen. Be safe and well Luke! Trank it if it gets out, but if you go into their space I honestly not have any sympathy. You seriously want to die that bad? The big cat deserves a treat for putting up with humans anyway. And if the zoo made that the official policy, as in posted "if you don't want to die, don't pass this rail" the careless parent types would be more careful because "what do you mean what I am doing is dangerous?" is actually pretty common.

I mean, using lethals on escaped chimps is absolutely justified. Definitely not on most animals like elephants or tigers, but chimpanzees are genuinely violent beasts that will make their targets suffer. Casual Geographic already posted videos about how chimps take the time to coordinate gang assaults on victims to mutilate their faces and nether-regions. So yeah, lethals are justified against them.
