It's so funny, in Portuguese it's exactly the contrary, we use the male variation when we point to an animal, unless we know for sure it's a female.

It's like that in Spanish too. I found it kind of surprising that Russian uses the female form of an animal.

In English, it is that way sometimes too. People will often refer to animals with male pronouns.

@@empresseternity1 Actually, i find that this is true depending on the animal in question: it all depends on what "gender" the general public sees to be the "right" one, due to pop culture and stuff. For example: -Dogs are masculine, so "he" is often used (e.g: "Wow, you have a big dog! *He* looks so friendly!") used, yet cats are feminine, so "she" is used instead (e.g: "Woah, your cat is so gentle. Is *she* a rescue, or from a breeder?").

Btw there is two kinda slang words in my language: "koni" (конь) and "luuska" (лошадь). They both come from russian, but unlike in russian they kinda both mean a very low quality horse, "luuska" being the worse one of the two

Does the Russian language have special names for the genders of horses, like we do in English? Female horses are called mares, and males are called stallions or geldings.

I am not native russian, but yes, if I remember correctly then the word he mentions here for horse means any horse, but there is at least anothet word for horse in russian: конь. But looking at dictionary, it seems that конь is more of a horse used for riding. The word in the dictionary for mare seems to be кобыла while for stallion, again in the dictionary, seems to be жеребе́ц. But that is just on the dictionary, so if I am wrong, then any native speaker can correct me, because sometimes russian vocabulary is not so simple

My friend (who knows more Russian than I), says that “кошка” has a negative connotation to it. Is this true? I was going to use it as a nickname for a camp I go to.

Фёдор, слово "Заяц" не произносится как "заиц"! Так только волк говорил в мультике "Ну, погоди" :) Ты хочешь сказать, что все русские так же говорят как волк??? Fedor, the word "Заяц" is not pronounced as "заиц"! Such only a wolf said in cartoon "Ну, погоди (Just you wait)". Do you want to say, that all russians are talking the same as wolf???
