Joy Amin if you don't like rose I'm not sure you'll enjoy anteaus.. It's far from a manly fragrance imo
@speedwolf52126 жыл бұрын
A man are you sure you're talking about the same fragrance? Antaeus is well known as one of the most masculine men's fragrances ever created(in both its vintage & current form). And while Rose is a note in there, it's barely discernible. I don't think I've ever seen anyone refer to it as a rose dominant fragrance.

No doubt one of the best reviews from a topic that interests more than one. I actually saw this review more than once because of how educational it is, without losing personal good humor. His videos always make my day. Thank you for your service to the Frag Com. Oh, and yes, Mr. Smelly just became my favorite Fragrance Reviewer.

Great video. We have civets living somewhere in our backyard in Tokyo and they spray that smelly stuff around in Feb/March. It’s the weirdest smell! The closest thing I have smelt that is similar is the skunk in America....funky and off, but not as eye watering and gagable.
@javierdiazsantana2 жыл бұрын
I do have skunks living around my house since a hill is in front of my house. The smell is pungeant but nice still
@justaddlight6 жыл бұрын
I recall the original Obsession (for women) having civet in it...as well as Noir for men by Tom Ford - absolutely CANNOT stand that one, but at least Obsession was a hit. I was also swallowed by a whale once while trying to procure some fresh ambergris. Luckily I escaped by running all the way to the end until I was pooped out.
@speedwolf52126 жыл бұрын
Just Add Light Noir edp definitely had civet in the earliest formulation. It's been removed in current formula (I much prefer the newer version, but I do respect that skank in the older version)
@justaddlight6 жыл бұрын
In that case, thank goodness for the reformulation. I've been wearing Noir Pour Femme and it's essentially a slightly more floral version of Noir Extreme. Wonderful, wonderful juice. No civet note lol.
@HenryPerez_royal_hp6 жыл бұрын
GhostTech1 well they must have the old formula at Sephora cuz I love noir edp and I can clearly still make out the civet in that frag. I was at Sephora a week ago and trust me, there is still plenty of civet in that frag!

I just wana say I love your videos, man! Always fun. This is an awesome video, I really like your way of analyzing these notes. I don't know anyone else doing video like this, right now. I think you should keep doing things like this! Other types of notes I think would be interesting to go into are: different wood notes, different green notes, different fruit notes, etc. This could be the start of a great series!

I've just subscribed to your channel! Love this video and your oldschool gentleman taste in fragrance! I'm 28 but I love all the gems you mention in this type of videos! The other reviewers are not so classy in fragrance's tastes and they seem to prefer overly sweet boyish-colognes. Among these 3 my favorite (and most versatile) is Antaeus ! I love it! Keep up the great work! Cheers from Italy ! :)

I did bought Givenchy Gentleman '74 modern formula. It does have a gnarly vomit civet note from the opening which turns rancid to the drydown and accompanies the russian leather. Still extremely funky to today's standards. Really loving the sex bomb feel at 20 years old

@paulhegarty83806 жыл бұрын
Great stuff! One of your best Mr. Smelly and certainly the best offering to date this year by any reviewer I have seen. I really enjoyed the tutorial aspect to it, very interesting and a refreshing change to common formats.- I've just realised by watching this that I must be a bit of an animalic guy when it comes to fragrance preferences. I tend to gravitate to them judging by my bottle collection, good to know.- Mr. Smelly, I would love you to deliver a further video at some point on an issue related to this one. It is regarding Etat Libre d'Orange's ' Secretions Magnifiques '. I haven't had my nose on this ' fragrance ' yet but I intend to get a sample soon. As you will know Mr. Smelly, this is the 'enfant terrible ' of the fragrance community, countless fragrance lovers finding it absolutely nauseating and completely unwearable. Yet, there are some who find an appeal in it and it has gained credit with certain luminaries , Luca Turin for example gives it 5 stars in his book , describing it as a 'nautical floral' and " stupendous !" . So just what is going on here with such a huge discrepancy of opinion? I think this is going beyond the " well it's all subjective " argument. I think it raises all kinds of philosophical debates about the nature of perfumery, aesthetics and art . If we accept that perfumery is an art form ( this is a contentious issue in itself ) then are the ELd'O perfumers playing around with the notion of ' What is art ? ' in the way that artist Marcel Duchamp did in 1917 by exhibiting an inverted urinal? , exploiting the lack of a firm definition of art. Could they quite literally be taking the piss? Is it a case of the perfumers saying " it's art because I say it is?" in the same way artist Tracey Emin did with her ' My Bed ' installation (1998) after graduating from Goldsmiths? Or are the perfumers making a legitimate statement by revealing the underbelly of our olfactory human condition in a way that parallels the disturbing work of the British 20th century painter Francis Bacon? I'd be very interested to know any thoughts you have on this . - Sorry for the digression, I find it an interesting area nonetheless. -Thanks for the video Mr. Smelly, really enjoyed it.

the fact that vomit and honey are synonymous when compared in scent profile in reference to civet makes sooo much sense! Raw honey elicits an involuntary vomit reflex from me.

Great stuff Dan👍🏻 I love me some civet. It’s all about balance though and used wisely the animalic flourishes can deepen and elevate a fragrance into something sublime. Shame a lot are banned now. Boss Number One is a fantastic inexpensive one. Still very animalic in current formulation I would recommend you try if you haven’t already👌🏻

Great video. I love the description of ambergris, my favourite note of all. Green Irish Tweed was a great choice. But what about hyrax? Where's skunk? Both are used in fragrances. Hyrax is rather common, for example in the fragrance with the same name by Zoologist. Skunk is extremely rare, but I own one with a synthetic skunk note. They are both very challenging, especially skunk. But they can be interesting in fragrances.
@hocineted75943 жыл бұрын

Great video. I''m a big fan of some animalic perfumes. Really love Kouros, Antaeus and am still searching for more animalic goodness. I have a new bottle of Givenchy Gentleman, but I don't get any animalistic vibe from it, unfortunately.
@kkchome6 жыл бұрын
forgot to mention, so far the best ambergris I have come across is Creed's Erolfa.
@MrSmelly19776 жыл бұрын
Thanks kk. The modern Givenchy Gentleman has lost some depth and maybe some animalic funk I think. Erolfa is indeed a great Creed with a very good ambergris note.
@nickyb71852 жыл бұрын
I’m pretty certain kouros used animalis, a base created in the mid 20s by Synarome and is a synthetic. But hey it’s a great composition regardless.
@interqward16 жыл бұрын
I don't totally go along with this paradigm mythology about 'earthy/animalic/sexy' et cetera AS THE ONLY FACTOR when it comes to ambergris in particular - I think more recent thinking about molecular dichroism in scent molecule compounds goes a long way towards explaining why perfumers use ambergris: if you leave the ambergris in the other compounds for a long time, after a while it 'lifts' - really almost 'spins' the scent upwards with a power and energy that is clearly distinguishable from the same compounds when they are WITHOUT the ambergris. It's a micro-electronic potentials thing... I think. Something we are still a way off fully understanding in exclusively a scientific way.

Interesting... seems like the note I am looking for, thinking it is animalic.. perhaps isn't? We're talking about... something sharp, with bite, with a punch, nearly, maybe, sort of pungent and aetheric, sorta like turpentine or gasoline (though not necessarily smelling just like gasoline, lol).. Any idea what type of note we might be looking at here? :-) Mark
@BabylonBurnout Жыл бұрын
Lapidus also has this "stinky white floral" note, I guess in Lapidus they use jasmin while in Kouros they use synthetic civet (I haven't smelled Kouros yet though). However I don't find those notes very masculine at all, maybe masculine in the sense of a sweaty shower room, but not comparable to the dark leatheryness of something like Antaeus. I think castoreum wins over civet in terms of manly scents.
@gisbrei6 жыл бұрын
I love the ambergris/ambroxan in Creeds, and I also want to try more scents with musk(y) notes. I recently tried a sample of Figment Man from Amouage - Smells like Schweppes Lemon with a hefty dose of zoo, and I had to wash it off after about an hour. It has a very strong animalic urine note, that I'm told is synthetic. Something derived from goat fur?

I'd imagine that ambergris in any amount is now banned by IFRA, especially if they don't even allow plant products, like oakmoss.
@mylessilton75076 жыл бұрын
I wonder. You don't kill the whales to get it; they puke it up. So there's a limited supply. That's what makes it one of the most expensive perfume ingredients there is (if not the most). I think parfumeurs use ambroxin (?), the synthetic, because the real stuff is so expensive, not because it's illegal.

Abdul Karim al Faransi "Shaikh al faransi" has a very prominent Ambergris note which is very similar to real Ambergris, considering the price of the same, I wouldn't be surprise, if perfumer has used real Ambergris.
@johndavid40076 жыл бұрын
What a stunning fragrance. A rich ambergris-like, oceanic tobacco scent. But it's not real ambergris. Being in England, he has to deal with IFRA compliances. Plus, if that had real ambergris in it, it would cost 5 times as much as it does.
