Dog owners have been saying it for years: "Dogs are really just four-legged, furry humans." And now science backs it up! Researchers trained dogs to lay still in an FMRI machine and what they found is sure to make you go "awwwwww."

Dogs Are People, Too
www.nytimes.com/2013/10/06/opi...
"FOR the past two years, my colleagues and I have been training dogs to go in an M.R.I. scanner - completely awake and unrestrained. Our goal has been to determine how dogs' brains work and, even more important, what they think of us humans."
Functional MRI in Awake Unrestrained Dogs
www.ccnl.emory.edu/greg/journa...
"Because of dogs' prolonged evolution with humans, many of the canine cognitive skills are thought to represent a selection of traits that make dogs particularly sensitive to human cues. But how does the dog mind actually work? To develop a methodology to answer this question, we trained two dogs to remain motionless for the duration required to collect quality fMRI images by using positive reinforcement without sedation or physical restraints."
Wolf Howling Is Mediated by Relationship Quality Rather Than Underlying Emotional Stress
www.cell.com/current-biology/a...
"While considerable research has addressed the function of animal vocalizations, the proximate mechanisms driving call production remain surprisingly unclear. Vocalizations may be driven by emotions and the physiological state evoked by changes in the social-ecological environment, or animals may have more control over their vocalizations, using them in flexible ways mediated by the animal's understanding of its surrounding social world."
Chimpanzees of a feather sit together: Friendships are based on homophily in personality
scienceblog.com/67159/chimpanz...
"Like humans, many animals have close and stable friendships. However, until now, it has been unclear what makes particular individuals bond."
Decades-long social memory in bottlenose dolphins
rspb.royalsocietypublishing.or...
"Long-term social memory is important, because it is an ecologically relevant test of cognitive capacity, it helps us understand which social relationships are remembered and it relates two seemingly disparate disciplines: cognition and sociality."

Science is finally catching up to pet-owners.

May I bring up an idea? What your comment means to me is that pet owners have had the "wisdom" to recognize that animals have emotions all along, possibly because they have some sort of a fondness or respect for animals. If that is your intended description of pet owners, then I think calling them "owners" kind of undermines this positive view of them. I think calling a person the "owner" of an animal shows that the "owner" has the attitude that they are entitled to, as the title implies, OWN another sentient being. Most pet owners I've ever encountered own animals because they like what the animal provides FOR THEM. They are using that animal for their personal entertainment. (i.e. they make their pets do pointless tricks that ONLY serve to entertain the owner. Just think about that, why would a person ever derive satisfaction from another being doing their bidding? Would you derive satisfaction from commanding your friend to do some action and watching as they obey you?) A lot of them got that animal from a pet store, which means they paid for some poor abused dog in a puppy mill to be empregnated with a new puppy ( on an instrument the industry itself calls a "rape rack"). Most pet owners eat other animals, which means they pay for those animals to go through horrifying conditions that they would NEVER put their beloved pets through. And if those pet owners are so observant of their pets, they'd most likely be able to detect that the animals they eat also have emotions if they just got to know them. So when I see the term "pet OWNERS" in the context of implying that pet owners love and care for animals, my hippocricy alarm goes off. What do you think of this idea?
@amandasmith593
@amandasmith593 10 жыл бұрын
Ellie D I think I used the wrong term. I adopted my pets and they are part of my family. I have lived with animals my whole life and am well familiar with their emotional depth. However, I am also aware that they are not sapient. My cats were rescued from the streets where at least one of them almost died. I care for them and make the choices they cannot. I love my pets, I recognize their emotions, but I do not delude myself with the notion that they are sapient.

S miles, why do you sound suspiciously like a PETA supporter? I never considered myself to be the "owner" of my pets though. Alternatively, doesn't one's own parents more or less own you until you're 18?
@Smiles5s5s
@Smiles5s5s 10 жыл бұрын
***** lol does it sound like I'm a PETA supporter because I'm advocating for respecting animals? It says right on their homepage that animals are not ours to use for food or entertainment. Or something like that. Does it really matter why I sound like a PETA supporter though? Does whether or not I support PETA mean anything in this conversation? That's cool that you don't consider yourself an owner of your pets. What do you consider yourself in relationship to them then? If your relationship is such that you respect their body autonomy, do you extend the same right to body autonomy to other animals and therefore refrain from eating them? Idk what the legal standing on parent ownership of their kids is. I'm pretty sure people can't just own other people lol.. but if I had kids I wouldn't think i own them because I think every sentient creatures belongs to themselves. I don't see how I can possibly have any claim to their body when they are perfectly capable of owning themselves being that they are their own consciousness. I'd view myself as more of a guardian of them until they can be old enough to be their own guardian. But they'll always be their own owner.
@DrPonner
@DrPonner 9 жыл бұрын
S miles Yes it does matter that you sound like a PETA supporter, because why should I take the opinion of a joke? Because that is what PETA is. They are like the Evangelical Christians of the Dietary World, knocking on your door prosyletizing you and they somehow fool themselves into thinking they have the moral high-ground. _Most pet owners eat other animals, which means they pay for those animals to go through horrifying conditions that they would NEVER put their beloved pets through. And if those pet owners are so observant of their pets, they'd most likely be able to detect that the animals they eat also have emotions if they just got to know them._ It seems hypocritical at best that I spare one animal and not another, I will give you that. However what you every other fucking white knight needs to understand is that we are *OMNIVORES*, meat is an important part of our diet and our ancestors ate meat. That's why we have canines and incisors! And you know what? Animals get eaten all the fucking time! Lions eat deer! Why should we be excluded? Sure, you can respect animals, and I'd say I do too, but don't think you have the moral high ground for thinking that eating animals is bad. I don't know if you're a vegetarian, but if you are, how do you know that plants don't suffer, that they can't feel pain? There is evidence that certainly suggests that plants and jellyfish do have a neural system of sorts, it's just not all collected into a mass like a brain. Maybe you should think of the silent agony of the broccoli you eat. Factory farming, it is bad and it is careless. *Traditional* farming, however, is far more painless.

I have lived with animals my whole life. I never thought of them having any less emotional capability than humans. I assumed it was common logic that they experience joy, sadness, guilt, excitement, and etc. just as we do. They just express it differently. I know my cat Boots loves me for me, and not just because I provide food. One day, I yelled in the living room from another cat I had back then, attacking me. Boots heard my scream, ran into the living room, and batted the other cat to tell it to bug off. Then walked up to me, meowing, as if to say, "are you alright?"

Rae Strong Why am I an asshole..?? Every species will vary with their emotions. Humans definitely experience a more broad range of emotions, however that is not to say that other species don't experience their own range of emotions, that in which are very similar to human emotions, and all species emotions. Humans and all other animals can truly love each other given the right experiences with one another. Okay.. LOOK, when you see something living , its not on auto pilot, there is SOOOO much power and purpose within all life, its mind blowing. Billions upon billions of years came into exact alignment to create us and all living things, its truly the biggest miracle, one can't even begin to comprehend. All life came into this life just as we did, I didn't sign up for this body, or time and space. Neither did anyone else, or anything else. I think its silly to think that we couldn't have been another person or another species. I respect all life as they were me. I see myself in all. Namaste and love! :)

***** "Not on autopilot" might be a misconception though. ;-) We might all be on autopilot and that which feels, which has the emotions, might be one and the same in every being and is tied to the observer part. This is philosophically related to the problem that you cannot know whether you forgot something you did or didn't consciously experience in the first place. But I have experienced in an experiment how a person (me) can interact with the world without experiencing it consciously.

***** you compared their emotions to humans'. Therefore, you implied that their emotion are the same in comparison. Lions do not have empathy, compassion, remorse, etc. They don't need to. Animals who travel in groups would carry these characteristics in order to work together to survive. Obviously we do because we traveled together to hunt in the cave man- ages. Same with dogs, they traveled in packs, so they carry these specific feelings. Wild cats, however, do not. As well as many others, such as crocodiles, lizards, frogs, etc. They do not depend on team work to survive. There's your real answer.

And actually, animals don't live out of emotion. They live out of pure instinct. To eat and fuck and reproduce. They don't think about it. You don't see bunnies contemplating their love deviations before they eat that lettuce. You don't see them decide whether to fuck another bunny. You don't see them decide if they want to die or naw. It's just instinct to do, not think. Nothing more.

Malkhut Sefirah I own a cat, and recently it did something that made me realize he is way more intelligent/sensitive than I thought. I've raised many animals over the years and I always thought they're simple minded, interesant creatures. anyway, I adopted the cat when he was a month old. he was in the middle of a busy highway, trying to follow random people, so I had to save it. I thought it may feel 'lonely', losing his family, so I gave him a stuffed cat doll to play and sleep with. that doll looks and feels very real, and it was as big as him. evetually it got so dirty, and the cat grew older, so I took it away from him. recently I found it and decided to wash it, and then my cat saw it and acted all weird. I gave him the doll and he took it, sat beside it for hours, sniffing and trying to 'play' with it, and refused to give it back. I was surprised, cause after a wash, he couldn't have been reacting to his own smell, and he didn't see the doll for over a year, he was just a baby then. this made me wonder: if he reacted this way to a doll, how does he feel about the "real" thing, I mean, his real siblings? he can clearly remember things from his past, and has emotions related to it. does he remember his family? I wish there was a way to know..

There are no "human" emotions, only emotions. The hubris of humans being so different from other animals is apparently VERY deeply engrained in mainstream minds and will take a long time of step-by-step enlightenment to get rid of. Some people are really afraid of dropping those artificial distinctions and separations. I guess it's because empathy is a responsibility. When you have empathy for other beings, it puts an additional burden on you, and naturally someone who is worried by that would not be inclined to see the benefits that it can bring. So much denial. And so-called "science", the intellectual sphere of analysis, of separating and distinguishing things, can be an escapist zone for that kind of people. When I told someone that I befriended a fly by helping it out of a problematic situation, the attempted alternative explanations I heard from him were shamefully stupid, in part because illogical as hell. In a way I can understand, since I have been shown things way farther down the line and was scared, too. But people should really try and make some effort to move out of their comfort zone. But I also understand that that will probably rarely happen without solid external incentive.

However, I just don't have enough faith in people to think it will happen in my lifetime if at all. I can't imagine the politicians passing laws that will tick off the various animal industries and call for enforcing new (or existing) legal standards and making them pay to make the changes necessary to treat non-human species with respect and dignity. It would also take away a false sense of superiority if they have to admit and act upon the fact that animals are not as far removed from us as their egos want to believe.

The emotional range gets smaller the further down the evolutionary ladder you go of course, and it's important not to get too carried away-claiming that a fish can feel gratitude for instance-but there are certainly many emotions that all vertebrates, and probably some advanced invertebrates too, appear to have in common, such as fear, curiosity, anticipation, excitement, anger, distress, and pleasure.

Even if animals don't have the same depth of emotions as we do, we still have a good reason not to treat them like property because they have SOME emotion and it's clear from their body language that they don't like being used in a lot of the ways we use them. I predict that if we were to prove that animals have similar depths of emotions to us, then most people would just come up with a bunch of excuses for why it's actually ok to confine, use, and kill them for some selfish pleasure the humans derive. Basically, nothing would change from how most people react to vegans who bring up ethical arguments for not treating animals like resources.

I'm just advocating for not treating animals like shit. You know, not breeding cows, chickens, and pigs just to confine them in cages, mutilate their bodies and kill them. This idea has nothing to do with "treating them like ppl", it's more like just leaving them the fuck alone and not abusing them. Mabye the reason people think dogs don't have emotions is because they think of emotions in a different way. If emotions are exactly what we feel then dogs don't have emotions. If emotions are responses of their brains similar to ours but not the same then yes they have emotions.

The key to equilibrium on this Earth is recognizing that all animals feel, and they probably all feel some level of emotion, it's just that that emotion will differ from ours and for different reasons. It really annoys me when scientists try to tell me that the relationship I have with my dogs is based purely on my dogs' desire to survive. It just doesn't explain the intimate behavior I experience with my dogs (and no I don't mean in a sick way, but just those intimate moments you can have with an animal where you are both enjoying each other's company). Whilst I agree that dog's needs differ from mine, I believe their emotions are very closely aligned. Dogs always know the people that like them and the people that don't. When we consider the more domesticated species of any animal, it makes sense that they would feel emotions similar to ours, as we have bred them for such purposes.

This makes me feel less stupid for missing my dog that passed 2 years ago. I spent a lot of time with her. I picked her from the litter, I raised her from a pup. She stayed with my parents when I moved out. And whenever I go back to their place, I notice her absence. I keep looking for her at the back door, and she's not there. I thought I was dumb for missing her. But this kinda changes that. If she felt for me too.

I work in a dog rescue centre and sometimes we get in dogs that have come in together. Sometimes these dogs are very attached to the other dog and putting them in separate kennels causes them a lot of stress, but they are only happy when reunited with their friend (not just any other dog). I'd say that this proves that dogs have emotions, even if they are not as strong as in humans

Humans have a natural instinct to eat sugar+fat and to squeeze pimples. How does that prove anything? Crows use tools and can adapt in a pinch. They're even dropping walnuts amongst traffic to crack them open. They teach their new methods to their young. How is this "natural instinct"? How is this not "survival stragtegy"? How is everything WE do not "natural instinct and survival instinct"? Just because humans can't have complex communication with animals does not mean thathumans are the only beings capable of complex thought.

Ei aC RandomHelpingGuy All that you mention is part of instinct. Even using our brains could be considered instinct, though people seem to think that our self-awareness makes us not instinctual, but this is an illusion. If not, then humans do often go on their instincts, e.g. for sex, also fear unleashes the flight or fight system, and then there's panicking.

Yea so imagine how tortured factory farmed animals feel.
@phyrath5
@phyrath5 10 жыл бұрын
Why is it so few people can see the big picture? Obviously it is cruel & unhealthy to factory farm animals (it isn't healthy to factory farm plants ether), but there are, what is it now, seven billion humans on Earth, humans eat the factory farmed animals, but there's not enough to feed the what it is, seven billion humans on Earth? So the factories try to produce more, not caring at all about the animals, & the people, even if they are not able to reliably feed themselves, reproduce creating more humans that need more food. And that isn't even the full extent of it. Humans need more then just food. They need clean water, shelter, heating/cooling, & power. There isn't enough space on Earth to properly farm enough food for everyone (there doesn't even seem to be enough room to factory farm it), there isn't enough space for housing ether, humans mostly use the finite fossil fuels for power generation, heating & cooling, yet while so much of what we have is entirely finite humans seem to be intent on reproducing, ever increasing the demand for resources. Can't you see? The infinitely growing human population is the problem. At this point the most morally sound solution I have yet been able to think of would be to begin Wold War 3. Think about it for a while, humans have decided, for the most part, not to allow the extermination of groups of humans based on genetic traits or their religious beliefs, the U.N. opposes the idea of killing criminals, diseases aren't killing humans at a fast enough rate to be helpful, so what options remain but war?

phyrath5 If every family kept their own garden of annual and seasonal, edible plants while using resources like clean water smarter, we could absolutely sustain our population. The old concept of a city full of people, who required huge mono-cultures of plants and livestock, all puts us at greater risk for insecurity while harming every environment in-between! Greater diversities of wildlife leads to more resilient, balanced environments for critters (and us). If you want your food and ecosystems treated with dignity then you've got to do it yourself :)
@Smiles5s5s
@Smiles5s5s 10 жыл бұрын
phyrath5 I don't really understand the point of your rant about limited resources. Are you using that as an argument for continuing to eat animals? If so, then perhaps you didn't realize that eating animals actually requires MORE resources. We feed something like 7 pounds of plant PROTEIN to make like 1 pound of animal protein. Here's what just one study found for example: Input energy was calculated taking into account labor, machinery, fuel, irrigation, herbicides, electricity and transportation. The number of kcal of input energy required to produce a kcal of energy from the product is as follows: broiler chicken (4:1), turkey (10:1), milk (14:1), pork (14:1), egg (39:1), beef (40:1) and lamb (57:1). Plant protein = 2.2:1 kcal. (Source:ajcn.nutrition.org/content/78/3/660S.long) And in the process we use up a ton of water, contribute to deforestation, produce a shitload of greenhouse gasses (the meat industry is the #1 produce of greenhouse gasses) and use up a shitload of antibiotics contributing to multi-drug resistant strains of bacteria that breed in slaughterhouses and then infect us. For example, in the US over 80% of antibiotics are used on farm animals and a lot of them don't even protect the animals from being sick, they just increase the carcass weight of the animal. Every single agiency that knows anything about biology has spoken out against this, saying its a dangerous practice. Keeping animals is tight quarters where they may be exposed to animals who have dropped dead is actually what caused the flu virus to mutate to the point where it was 1) able to be transmitted from animals to humans and 2) be super fucking deadly. You know what happened the last time the flu virus mutated so it could jump species? It became the deadliest pandemic in the human history - flu of 1918. Most flu doesn't target young people, but this one did. Over 1/4 of Americans got sick. It killed more people in 25 weeks than AIDS killed in 25 years - no wars or plagues has ever killed so many in such little time. All the new strains of stronger flu viruses have been getting discovered in factory farms where animals are kept in close quarters and in shitty conditions. The director of the World Health Organization delcared 3 greatest threats to humanity: the global food crisis, climate change and pandemic influenza. Literally all 3 of these are happening largely BECAUSE of the meat industry. If we all stopped eating meat we could feed people with the grains we use to feed animals, we would greatly reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and we would put an end to the best breeding ground for the next deadly flu virus. So if by any chance you were arguing that we NEED to keep wasting resources and treating animals like shit for the survival of humans, I hope I've changed your mind. If you want me to cite my sources, I'd be happy to do that.
@phyrath5
@phyrath5 10 жыл бұрын
Ellie D The point was more that the large population of humans on Earth is the problem. As I said before we mostly use finite resources (or consume renewable resources at a rate that will make them finite). I think we need more education, less sexism (maybe less religion too), & more birth control. Agriculture on Earth is almost as fucked as politics, almost everything is ether resource inefficient, extremely environmentally damaging, or produces food that will cause other illnesses.
@Smiles5s5s
@Smiles5s5s 10 жыл бұрын
phyrath5 I see. Yeah, it does seem like a lot of important shit around us is inefficient. Unfortunately there is a giant profit to be made by all the comanies who own all the agriculture and who happen to have their hands deep in politics. I think educationg people about the dangers of certain practices can help though. These companies must be aware of the damage they are causing and they don't seem to care. But if we stop supporting them, then we can take away their power. As for needing less sexism and religion, I think that one can be achieved with talking to people and trying to persuade them that sexism and religion is illogical. I think this bc if you just tell someone 'you can't have the things you believe in anymore!" they are gonna be like "wtf, but i think i have good reason to believe those things". That's why if one disagrees with a religious person, they should both examine their reasons and see whose reasons make more sense. Basically never agree to disagree! I think people like Richard Dawkins who go around trying to address arguments for god really help. What did you think of my idea that if we stop supporting meat we can help solve the top 3 greatest problems facing humanity according to the WHO? I'm just curious to see if I convinced you to not support the meat industry at least on that basis.

(I failed him.) some of my family said that he didn't do it on purpose but I think anyone would try and kill themselves if they had him as an owner/guardian. that plus he didn't have a habit of chewing cables until I had to leave him with the animal abuser) or anything like that if anything I noticed that some of my pets had taken up similar to the same type of personality as the abuser.

I believe this. My kitten was abandoned and so was her playmate. I already had a cat beside her, but took in the kitten when she showed up hungry, cold, and thirsty one night. Found her owner and he claimed he was trying to find a way to get rid o f her since he was moving...so he left her outside -.- Anyway, he had another cat as well that I couldn't take and appears he did the same with her. Ironically enough this cat found my patio as well, and as soon as the kitten saw her, she went bonkers. I didn't think anything of it at first, but was new how she responded, and it was every time the cat showed up. I let my kitten outside to see what she would do, and the two cats went right up to one another, touched noses, and started playing and hanging out on the patio. It's sad...but also ties into this video and believe that animals have emotions and can recognize friends.

Do you want to know if your dog have emotions just look at their eyes, they are fulll of life full of understanding and love pure love, their eyes will tell you a lot of tales about their emotions. Humans should stop to think we are the only animals with emotions feellings or understanding and comprehend and learn that every single form of life matters and that they can teach us a lot . Peace.

Yes, I know my dog feels emotion. I hate when people treat animals like they aren't worth anything. They are just like us.
