Whether you’re out of the house for several days on vacation or simply gone for a few hours to run some errands…what does your dog think when you’re away?
Do they think you have abandoned them? Do they feel confused?
And have you ever wondered what dogs think of humans? Do our dogs know we’re humans, or do they think we’re just larger dogs?
Keep watching for a thorough breakdown of what’s happening inside your dog’s mind and
In general, leaving the house can cause separation anxiety in dogs. Research suggests that eight out of 10 dogs find it hard to cope when left alone.
Dogs are social pack animals. Therefore, they become upset and stressed when they are separated from their human family.
That said, if you frequently leave the house to go to work or school, your dog learns your routine and will expect you to leave and return at a certain time.
Although dogs don't wear watches, they do have their own internal clocks and concept of time.
But remember, if you have adopted a new dog to your family and you leave them alone at home, they may feel confused or abandoned because they are yet to become accustomed to your schedule.
Do dogs know how long you've been gone?
Studies have been conducted on whether dogs can judge how long their owners have been gone, and if they miss their humans more intensely with time.
One experiment in 2011 conducted by Swedish researchers placed cameras that recorded how dogs reacted when their humans were away for half an hour, two hours, and four hours.
The experiment showed that dogs greeted their owners with greater excitement when their humans left them alone for two hours as opposed to just half an hour, which suggests that dogs can, indeed, tell the difference between these times.
However, dogs did not react differently when their humans were gone for two hours versus four hours.
What this tells us is that dogs feel time differently to us. While your dogs do have some concept of longer versus shorter time spans, they won't understand exactly how long you were away.
What Do Dogs Think About All Day?
Have you ever wondered what dogs think about?
Scientist believe the way dogs think is probably very different from the way we do.
We humans have many structures that help us interpret the ideas and thoughts we have, but dogs don’t.
For example, dogs do not have "language" because they don't have the Wernicke, a language processing center in their brain, so they cannot comprehend language.
The small amount of scientific research out there on dogs’ brains leads us to believe that dogs can only think subconsciously. They can draw upon memories to guide future behavior, however they do not come up with their own thoughts or ideas about a situation.
Therefore, when your dog is chilling out, they are not thinking about anything in particular.
What Do Dogs Think About When They Stare?
It all depends on what the dog is staring at.
If your dog is staring at another dog, they might not be thinking. Instead, they are staring to assert dominance.
If your dog is staring at you, that’s a very different story.
More often than not, dogs watch you to understand what you’re doing.
Dogs also stare at our eyes to express love
Do dogs know that we are not dogs?
Even though dogs come in a wide variety of body shapes and sizes, dogs can tell instantly whether they’re interacting with another dog or a human.
Studies have found that dogs have a mental category for humans. If they identify a creature as falling in that category, they treat them differently.
Dogs can even differentiate between dogs and non-dog animals, by visual observation. In a 2013 study, researchers at The University of Paris found that dogs were able to separate the images of dogs from non-dogs.
Do dogs really miss us when we are gone?
Scientists gave the dogs five scents. The scent of a familiar and strange human, the scent of a familiar and strange dog, and the dogs’ own scent.
Interestingly, when the dogs smelt the scent of a familiar human, the caudate nucleus of their brains lit up - a region associated with positive expectations and rewards.
Another study published in Behavioral Processes looked at how dogs’ behavior changed around people with different levels of familiarity.
In one of the experiments, scientists put dogs in an unfamiliar room with three human participants - their owner, a familiar person, and a stranger.
When the human participants left the room, scientists observed that the dogs would wait behind a door that THEIR OWNER went through, and not the other humans.
While research is ongoing, combining the knowledge of dogs loving their humans and the studies we have leads to the belief that dogs do in fact miss us when we're gone.
Do dogs get bored?
Dogs are intelligent animals-and, just like any other intelligent animal, dogs need a certain level of stimulation in order to feel engaged. If they go too long without that level of stimulation, boredom is going to kick in.

Life with a dog is way more fulfilled than life without one. I'm a worry-wart and an over-thinker so I stress myself out a lot and having my best little furry friend reminds me to stay present, patient, and grateful. My dogs are my family too. When I was a kid, my dog was like my brother. Now that I'm older, my newer dog is like my kid and it's awesome.

I am thinking about getting another female dog for my male dog but I'm scared of the idea that they take more time to take care of them. At the same time I'm sad to see him feel lonely. What advice can you give me?

@@sawsansalim2447pls look it up the internet. It may not necessarily be another dog, a dog may befriend any other pet, even a duck. If u want a female dog u may have issues when the female is in heat, so u could just get another male dog, evwn from other breed. For pets is important to be about the same size, so they can play at will. Some pets can be clumsy and unintentionally hurt the smaller one. But if the bigger pet is smart and gentle, he may also be gentle to the smaller one. U could get yourself a turtoise or a babycat. U can leave an unwashed blouse for him to have sth of you, and i don't know if u can, i have seen owners having cameras installed and talking live to their dogs. Another pet means more work to take care, but less work if both pets play together, u get more time for urself. Bless u and yr beloved dog!

It is so true how quickly they get used to even new routines. My husband has switched shifts 3 times in the past year. It took no time for the dogs to fall into new routines when he is sleeping at a different time than I am, and leaving in the middle of the night. This began only a month ago too. Even my neighbor’s dog, whom I absolutely adore, would wait for me to walk home from work at the same time everyday. My neighbor said she would go to the window and watch for me. I had no idea , until then, that other dogs watch the neighbors and their schedules too. Smart creatures, they! ❤

I always reassure him I'll be back and I love him, and leave him in his kennel. I'm gone for about 2 hours,@ the 1st thing I do is greet him and let him out of kennel when I get home. He does better now, but I'm always so happy to get back home to him ..❤❤❤❤❤

I have a question, not a comment. My seven year old dog suddenly became very ill and passed away while I was out of town for cancer treatment for three weeks. She was with family members while I was gone. I have felt very guilty ever since and have wondered if she was wondering why I wasn't there to help her. Was she thinking in had abandoned her? Was she sad that I wasn't there to help her? My heart still breaks. I had no idea when I left town that I'd never see her again. I still have so much grief over this.

Our dogs love us unconditionally. We are their world. While they sit and wait for us they don’t think abandonment. They think of the moment of reuniting. Dogs do not know the meaning of not being loyal. Dogs only know the meaning of being completely loyal. That is why your dog never felt abandoned. Your dog knew you were coming home, and was waiting for that moment, but unfortunately your friend was called home before you were able to come back. Your dog was not under stress for abandonment just missing you and hoping that you would come cuddle.

I had a cam on my poodle/sheepdog mix while I worked when she was younger. I crate trained her then I left the crate door open she would still settle in her crate to sleep eventually she moved to the couch until the kids got home from school. Id be home within an hour after that. Didn't seem like she had anxiety but she always 100% was excited to see them and me when we got home. If she ever got nervous she would run into her crate as a safe space.

I found that setting up my couch so my Chihuahua can look out the window when I’m gone helps a lot. Or, get a second dog if you’re going to be gone more than an hour. Please don’t crate dogs alone all day or leave them without some kind of stimulation. Having a family member or friend break up the time away helps a lot too. ❤

Dogs have a very good sense of time. When my husband retired and was home with our Holly, he said she was fine all day. But when it got to be about 1:00 or 2:00 in the afternoon, the time I usually returned home from work, if I was later that day, she would start pacing and crying. There was nothing he could do to console her. Now I'm retired and home most days. She is a rescued little 15 lb terrier.

I sometimes look after a toy poodle when his people are away. I've never known such an emotional dog. Super demanding and super affectionate. Toys are as dependent as you'd expect from anyone who is between two and ten times smaller than their peers. It's a scary world out there for a tiny dog. They need a close connection with a large ape to feel safe. Our old mutt would wait patiently if I tied her up outside a supermarket. I couldn't even imagine doing that with the little poodle - he would have screamed blue murder until I returned. He even gets worried if I go into an open shop where he can see me. A toy poodle's idea of bliss is to joined at the hip with you at all times ... until they decide they want quiet me-time, which you disturb at your peril lol

Now I find some of this a little out there. I have spent more time with dogs since I was a baby till now at 60. I have had a lot of dogs from hunting dogs, herd dogs, and mixed breed house pets to my current King Charles Cavalier Spaniels. My Australian cattle dogs you could watch them process their thoughts (brilliant animals) .My beagles were not as bright but made that up with loving loyalty. The coonhounds would pass their time with little interest in attention until the first fall night they wanted to be out on the trail of raccoon. Then, by the first snow, the interest passed until a January thaw and back to the woods. My Cavaliers seem to know what I'm going to do before I do. They certainly seem to have a better grasp of time. Each dog that has been in my life has had their own personality and quirks. I first and foremost allow them to be dogs. Dogs hate coustems, bandana, hats or other things that humans seem to feel compelled to make them do. We must remember they have pack instinct and view their human as the head of the pack and with that comes our responsibility. We should never leave them alone without a old tee-shirt or other artical of clothing that has not been laundered where they like to sleep. It gives them comfort to have our scent in lue of our personal attention.

Left to visit some friends, about twenty-five miles away, I was gone for some time about five hours in total, l left to go back to the house say five hours later, and when I got back, my partner asked, what time did you leave to come back, and when I told her, she said the dog got very worked up and started to run around the house at that exact time, not just the first time, but every time I went out, no matter where I was going, same thing when my partner she went out, I knew when she was on her way back every time. Just one example of what our dogs do.

I am convinced that our little Boston Terrier can understand many simple sentences. And he will do things we have not trained him to do. True, this may be coincidence but it happens so often in different ways that my wife and I are convinced that he understands enough our language to do things he was never trained to do. Example: I was playing games with him with an old ragged tennis ball. As a tease and to interest him in his food ball, I dropped the ball into his food dish. He could not pick the ball up and he could not reach the food between the ball and the rim of the dish. so he looked up at me with questioning eyes and so I said, "Well, pick it up by the fuzz". Guess what he did! Right. He picked it up by the fuzz!

This applies to cats too. Our youngest Siamese meets us at the door, cries until I get in the door from work upon hearing the garage door, and wakes my wife up for work everyday at 6:45am. All 3 Siamese walk her to the food bowls promptly at 5:30pm.

Remember, dogs age about 5 to 7 years per human year so that reflects in hours. What they see between dawn and dusk could be 36 hours to our 12… make sense? I don’t think dogs “worry” about their next meal… their lives are based on human habits & their reactions to the humans actions. No one knows what dog’s think - and they definitely don’t think what we think they think.

We were gone almost all day for my dad's funeral. My dog home alone and I returned to let him outside. i found him shaking and he would not make any eye contact. I let him outside where he did his business. Before leaving the house I gave him fresh food and water and reassured him that we were coming back. He understood and he was ok after that.

My little Pomeranian thought he was alone at my sister's house when we all went out except for my brother in law who was upstairs. He got my dog on video howling. He never howls and I can't get him to howl. It was so pathetic, he just started howling and looking around. Poor baby thought he was alone.

I think it's fine to make a big deal of them when you return. That is how dogs greet other pack members. It's natural. It's when you are leaving that you don't make a big deal of it. Just act like all is fine, and it should help to calm them. But a big greeting when you get home is a good thing and what they need.

I would like to add that many dogs are only content when the 'pack' (= dog plus close humans) is complete. If only one of us goes shopping for an hour, doggy sits in the porch waiting for his/her return and wouldn't even go for a walk with the other.

I dont train my dog nephew. I let it be a dog and live its life naturally. I give or make fresh meals and all natural. He's not my toy or my accessory. I dont try to dominate him. I work from home so i can tell when he wants to go out and can observe him fully. When we are out, I let him lead by his nose and don't pull him away from his activity. We play ball until he is tired and lays down at 2- 3 times. I adjust to him - he loves me very much and i love him too. Dogs and children have to be full time commitments otherwise don't have them. We are companions and we compromise to give each other the best life possible. Compassion 🙏🏽

My Chihuahua starts wining and talking and just jumping around when he knows I am leaving without him it’s like he’s begging to go and when I tell him he can’t go he throws a temper tantrum. It’s cute and sad at the same time. I try and take him when possible when I can’t I give him some reassurance that I will be back and give him a bone or something for him to try and occupy some of his time while I’m gone.

That's exactly how our old dog operated. When everyone was out she'd simply switch off until someone came home. During her early years I was fooled by the owner-as-pack-leader idea and was really dominating with the poor dog. Even though I was a dickhead, if I was the only one home she would hang around me. That's how much she needed a connection. It took some years for the penny to drop that it's not about being a gang leader to a dog, but being a kind and understanding parent. Live and learn.

Anyone who's a regular at a dog park knows that dogs don't only tell humans from other dogs, they often have strong breed preferences. For instance, -oodles tend to seek each other out. German Shepheds scare most breeds, but often not labradors and Goldies. Most dogs come to learn that, unlike dogs, humans can operate as treat dispensers, which makes us ultra precious to most of them :)
