Kizmit has been practicing her crate training even though she's not traveling to shows right now. She's a pretty special but sensitive girl, so training is important to make sure she feels confident when going to new places. Watch how she does with her training session during a walk outside.

If she had a more triangular leash, more like a vest around forelegs and the front of the back. I noticed that she always keeps her quills more or less like a wheel. If her leash were kept vestlike to the front her quills wouldn't be hindered. But I really have no idea! Thank you very much!

Thank you for all you teach me, Jesse. I so wish reward-based training had been widely known in my youth, so I could do what you do. Sadly, it was not the case, and it breaks my heart to think of all the missed opportunities and permanent damage caused to human/animal relationships because of sheer stupidity. Which, sadly still exists to a great degree today.

This is such a well made video! Jesse is someone I strive to be like. I will be forwarding this video to friends of mine who are concerned when they see displays of my cats nervousness/shyness. I like this video because it shows that even a SUPER skid-dish porcupine (more dangerous than a cat) can be worked with if you exercise patience and positive reinforcement. My cat Bella is very sweet and loving just like Kizmit, even if she runs away or gets loud (yowling) from being uncomfortable. When people take the time to see an anxious animal as anxious rather than a threat understanding follows. Thanks for reading, and thank you to everyone at AnimalWonders for ALWAYS being a model for how animals should be treated. Much love

Do you think Kizmet might like a dog harness? I've seen a few models that might not impede her quills I think I saw one the could clip behind her head crest, so you wouldn't have to slip it over her head. Edit: What size is she? I might have one that would fit her, never used, it was too big for my dog.

It's a darn shame that kids aren't being exposed to the wonders of nature via your visits with them. When I was in 5th grade, I had a teacher, Mr. Campbell, who had a room full of animals - boa constrictor, squirrels, rats, rabbits -- we even had a Great Horned Owl (injured, couldn't return to the wild) and I became completely enamored with all things "animal". I'm old now, but I still have my own version of a "zoo" -- albeit domesticated animals and 6 fish tanks! Kids need to experience and care for animals to have empathy for them.

Kismet is adorable, she actually looks like she is wearing a skirt. She is a total girl, and I love to see how interactive she is with you. I also like that you see ‘working with her’ as a fun social time with her and not as training her. You keep a nice connection with her, and give her some leeway to feel that she is winning the game too. She will never be bored with that kind of enrichment and as much social activity she wants and when she does. If that was her first introduction to the yard, the rest will be easy. What are her treats? And how many will she get in a day of exploring as well as doing exactly what YOU want. I think you. Both win this round🖤🇨🇦

Hey Jessi, thanks for the video. I have a question: What are african porcupines doing when they get stuck in a tight space not able to turn around? Going backwards seems to be not possible without breaking the quills. Is there any way for them to avoid this problem? Apart from not getting in trouble at first.
@animalwondersmontana
@animalwondersmontana 4 жыл бұрын
They can back out if they really feel the need. The slower and calmer they back up the fewer quills they catch, but when they're in a hurry they can bend and break some of the outer guard hairs and thinner quills.

I was wondering if you could house chinchillas guinea pigs and rabbits in the same area like the romping room
@animalwondersmontana
@animalwondersmontana 4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't recommend housing rabbits with chinchillas or guinea pigs because they're much stronger than the others and can easily injure them if they become territorial. Rabbits have a very powerful kick and they can be incredibly rough with each other if they aren't bonded. For facilities that are regulated by USDA, like Animal Wonders, rabbits cannot be housed with any other mammal (and sometimes any other animal at all).

why does she need a leash when she is so motivated to you
@animalwondersmontana
@animalwondersmontana 4 жыл бұрын
She doesn't need a leash when we're just at Animal Wonders, but we need to practice for when she goes back to public presentations in schools. The leash is a "just in case" precaution when working in a location that isn't our own. She could easily damage property with one little chew session, or get too close to an audience member amd make them feel uncomfortable. So learning how to stop, turn around, and come back to me when she feels the leash get tight is neccessary for her to be able to participate in presentations as an ambassador.
