I think you would absolutely love my chinchilla as I've raised her to be a perfect animal ambassador. Whenever we have to go out say to the vets or after I was burgled to my brother's (due to anxiety as the people who broke in where after her and I was trying to get new locks on my front door) I will always take the time to talk to people who ask about her and educate them as best I can. Children absolutely love her and she'll sit on my hand and let them touch her soft fur, I take a gentler approach with children as they're the next generation and are the one who could move on to help save endangered species which I always make a point to mention and why. I'd say she's helped at least 50 people in my area learn about chinchillas and me by myself way over 100 (chinchillas are one of my autistic obsessions) I love feeling like I'm teaching people and raising awareness for chinchillas.

That’s adorable 😍 I love small animals, but I’ve never had a chinchilla, unfortunately. My rat Toffee was a similarly gifted creature, as she was a very calm and friendly rat, so almost every time I would go on a walk with her on my shoulder or have people over, she would lead to an educational moment about rats.
@Miniae_Cecilia4 жыл бұрын
@@bayleighc.5843 I absolutely love rats! I used to have them when I was a child, I got my chinchilla because my mum wouldn't get me a rat as she was scared of them but when I told her about chinchillas and how soft and cute they are she got me one for my birthday/Christmas present. People need to learn about all sorts of animals and if you can teach children then they're the ones who can potentially save animals that are on the brink like chinchillas.

So jealous of your romping room! Our chins would LOVE it. We have an old girl too. Do you have any tips on caring for elderly, disabled chins in particular? (ours is 18 & blind, came from a severe neglect case. She barbered too, also had terrible urine staining. Recently put on painkillers for arthritis as was struggling to eat pellets & no dental issues found - otherwise now super happy, cheeky & clever)
@TheGirlWhoDraws4 жыл бұрын
Hi friend! I’m an owner of an older chin (12 year old male) and I’ve learned a lot of things in my 10 years of owning chinchillas. Monitoring their weight is important, if they’re not getting enough to eat it’s pretty important to step in and give some critical care by hand. I keep a little diary of my chin’s weights by week and that is also super helpful if you have to take them to a vet. I also like to add a splash of unflavored pedialyte into their water and the critical care mix, it helps with their hydration and balancing electrolytes. I keep Benebac on hand always as well in case of any upset stomach and loose stool, but I would do a little research yourself first because it does have certain sugar content, which is usually a big no-no for these guys but I haven’t had any problems with it for my chins. (It’s not a supplement given for long-term anyway, just for temporary issues.) It’s always good to have a Chinchillas emergency kit on hand, you can google it and figure out how to stock your own or I know that some breeders or Etsy shops have them pre-assembled that you can buy. I also keep a lot of ledges really close to the ground for him, so he is still able to jump without hurting his bones. Ramps are gonna be your friend too. Wouldn’t make anything too tall in case the little one should fall. Mine also lives with a much younger male, and I can tell he really values the companionship and just having a friend is a great source of enrichment in itself, but I also think it’s important to give him time to run around by himself because they have different energy levels. Any floor toys like little wooden cubes or those willow balls are great! I like to stuff some hay and a few healthy treats in the willow balls for him to pull out, and for a blind baby that may be just the stimulation they need! Chins are also very sensitive to sounds and smells, so try letting your senior out for play time and just start tapping on things and moving around, don’t be afraid to make little noises or call their name so they can hear and follow you. And also, just sitting still on the floor with them and letting them climb on your lap and arms is a great way to play and bond with them. I would also definitely get in contact with any local rescues, maybe give them a call because everybody has different experiences with the older guys and that’s where I learned a lot about care for them, besides reading up on the Internet. And of course, I would say always have the number of an exotic vet and an emergency vet on hand, they’re also super helpful with answering questions. I would ask your vet about the urine stains, but frequent dust baths will usually help those every time. Keeping the cage really clean helps too, of course. If really needs be to take care of it, you can gently try and wipe it with some lukewarm water. You just have to make sure not to douse them and wipe them dry or use the cold setting on a blow dryer to help them (very important it’s on cool, and you’ll be able to feel it on yourself), and usually I will manually rub a little bit of dust into any spots where I’ve had to wipe in the past. The barbering itself may take some time to grow out, because chinchillas do blow their coats and regrow hair at least once a year, so patience and dust baths I’m guessing are going to be your best bet for that. If your vet hasn’t taken a look yet, I highly recommend it because maybe there could be some ringworm or fungus if there are actual bald patches and fur loss. Your little one also may have a bit more fur slip because of the blindness, it will probably startle them if you try and pick them up too quickly. Hope that helps, and thank you for giving a senior chinchilla a loving, caring home! They are such special, unique little friends! And thank you for trying to learn how to take care of them well and give them the best life possible. 😊

I'm so impressed by your enclosure and your ability to get the ladies together without incident. My ladies always chatted to each other in their own cages but would try to rip the other's face off when together. It was too dangerous (and I tried nearly everything for months and months). Their personalities were SO different. My Phoebe was the sweetest, most mellow chin in the world and tolerated a LOT of handling. She loved to come out and run around and play. I lost her last year, sadly. My Bella is a grumpy old lady (around 8). Extremely territorial of "her space" and is very picky where you're allowed to touch her (cheeck skritches only, please, else you get the hecks). She hates being held, and is content to roll over (practically) onto her back on her hammock and nap and is super nice when food is involved....she's totally me. "Don't touch me/that party looks fun, but I would rather stay home" 😆

Hi! Wonderful video. At one point Jessie mentions the calcium content of pellets. We recently almost lost one of our Peruvian Guinea Pigs to kidney stones which our veterinarian said may be caused by calcium buildup. My question is could our Timothy hay pellets be our mystery source of calcium (assuming calcium is the cause)? If so is there a low or no calcium pellet available?

I love the romping room!! But I couldn’t help wondering. How long does it take you to catch them for presentations in such a big room? What are your different methods for catching them? I envision chili pepper and cayenne just walking into a crate? And the little animals probably all come up to you at some point, but do they do it all at one time so you can get them efficiently? Do they ever just get in a mood and run away constantly?
@animalwondersmontana4 жыл бұрын
We've worked with all of the animals quite a lot so they're comfortable with us being close. When I want to pick one of the chins up I slowly walk toward them and they either just stay put and I pick them up or they hop to a corner where I can then pick them up from. Chili Pepper and Cayenne both get a harness on and then walk into a crate. The guinea pigs usually run and hide under a hut wherever we walk up to them, so we just lift the hut and gently scoop them up 🙂

While I'm not able to give a diagnosis, I do hope your little one is okay. Sometimes they shake because they're cold or scared. Make sure they are in a space that is kept above 65°F without a draft (so no A/C vent nearby). Also make sure they have a place to go and hide if they feel unsafe. An easy way to offer this is to drape a blanket over one corner. Wishing the little budgie health and happiness!
