Very cool tips for when I do get to character animation but one question is if i for example use your walk cycle to run and then back to walk again would it be possible to easily change the limbs or a head turn with the same walk cycle after the run cycle? What would be recommended for those steps just to keep in mind for now
@woodplankmcАй бұрын
Hey, you can do it if you add more layers/tracks in the NLA editor. For example, you can create a new layer only for head, and place it on top of the walk or run cycle. It is more complicated than that, so I recommend playing around and practicing with it to get the desired results.

This was great! It helped me create my first NLA animation. Thank you! I have a question, my character had a noise modifier on the head to give it some crazy random motion but when I turned it into an action strip it seems to have lost the noise modifier animation to the head, do you know if you can carry a noise modifier motion into an action strip?
@woodplankmc6 ай бұрын
Hey, I don't think the noise modifier follows when converting an action into a strip but I could be wrong.

I appreciate any video attempting to explain the mess that is the NLA editor, but this glosses over some things. Like, it doesn't explain how you have actions for the animations, and they go in the NLA strips, yet for some reason the root motion is another action (is it? can't really tell) and that only has keyframes in the timeline and never enters the NLA. So how are you deciding whether it gets keyframes in the timeline vs. having keyframes in the action editor? What's the difference, and why? And if I wanted to export this animation, is it only going to export the timeline's keyframes, or only the NLA tracks, or only the actions? And why do we need to animate in 3 separate locations? I mean, ultimately this video doesn't really teach much at all, it just shows you doing things but doesn't really explain the how's or why's.
@woodplankmc3 ай бұрын
Hey, 1) The root can be separated to have more control over how far the character goes. You can later convert the root motion into a strip or not, depending on the scene. 2) It is up to you if you want to have keyframes on the timeline or in the NLA editor. I add keyframes in NLA to speed up the process and repeat the animations easily. 3) Blender will export everything combined and render the entire animation. Make sure to playback and check though, multiple times. 4) If you want to edit an action, select the strip, press on TAB, and then edit the keyframes either in the timeline or in the graph editor. This video goes over the basics of the NLA editor, and from there, if you don't use it yourself in projects, you won't understand it on the first try. Hopefully, that clears it up.
