Would it be correct to think that The NLA is essentially like the default animation Timeline but with layers onto which you can place pre-animated actions, like walk cycles, and other repeated actions, allowing you to do standard animation practice specific to a scene on the top layer? I hope this question makes sense. I've always been a bit confused about doing scene specific animation directly in The NLA rather than using and combining pre-set actions only.
@RiggingDojoАй бұрын
That is how it will be once the animation module finishes the updates in 4.4 and beyond. Right now the NLA is inside an action so it makes it harder but for an armature it isn't so bad.
@WaterShowsProdАй бұрын
@@RiggingDojo I see. Thank you. That explains why I was never able to fully come to terms with it. I'll look forward to the updates.

What’s the vision of blender do you use please
@asterixus27 күн бұрын
Hi Pierrick! I was wondering, for all the parts of the workflow that require drawing (like storyboarding maybe, 2D vfx etc.), do you recommend using a pen display tablet? Or would a pen tablet be just enough?
@PierrickPicaut_P2DESIGN27 күн бұрын
It's a matter of preferences. I know a lot of seasoned artists that use simple tablet. One of my former cocnept artist would work with a simple tablet after testing screentablet for a year, he wasn't comfortable with it. I, myself prefer screen table. So, if you're on a budget, you may try basic tablet first.

Great video thank you!! If you don’t mind me asking, what year did you start learning 3D animation please Pierrick? And how long before you felt you had grasped it?
@PierrickPicaut_P2DESIGNАй бұрын
It's hard to tell. I start 3D in 2011, Blender in 2012. Think IO tried animation pretty early on, but not intensly... I was more focussed on modeling, rigging, rendering. I started animating full time 8 years ago I believe, and I really felt a difference after 3 years. But honestly, I feel like I'm progressing on each animation I make.
@ukmonkАй бұрын
@ thank you so much for replying!! Yeah I have just recently started trying to learn and get serious about animation these last few months, but putting in hours every day. I played around with animation years ago, but badly lol, not knowing the principles etc just trying to ‘wing it’, but this year I got serious!! Thank you for your great content PP!

In the alive course are we creating the entire mech battle ? With the airplanes and missiles and the mech beeing hit ? Or is it only the rigging and walking of the mech ?
@PierrickPicaut_P2DESIGNАй бұрын
Not the full scene and no rigging. There are multiple anmation of the mech and the use of a special technique called space scwitching

What is the difference between the NLA and the animation layers that a lot of users want to be added?
@kordaling25 күн бұрын
Hi! experienced animator here, combining animations is a huuuge time saver when it comes to adjusting an animation. The NLA provides the tools to do it, but require more clicks, is more time consuming and is slightly confusing for the common user, and therefore, it's more prone to mistakes. Anim layer is simple tool; add a layer and then bake your animation. Quick, and effective VS time consuming and clunky. Hope it answers your question!
@xpea16Ай бұрын
Awesome tutorial !
@kevinfournier8173Ай бұрын
Great tutorial, thank you! I was wondering, if I animate for a game and export all my animations in one .fbx with the NLA, is there a way to export the base walk cycle + the head turn without baking? Or do I have to bake each "final" animation, rename it, and then export?
@oversalt4713Ай бұрын
Yeah, it's simple. Loads of videos on how to do it.
@faith37557Ай бұрын
quick question, should i start with the rigging course or Alive! or do I only need one of the courses? I'm a complete beginner
@PierrickPicaut_P2DESIGNАй бұрын
These are 2 different courses, one is for rigging, the other for animation so you should pick the one you are the most interested in. I believe animation is a little funier at first but it's up to you.
@oversalt4713Ай бұрын
I started with the art of effective rigging first, then alive. If you're only going to animate and rely on other people to build your rigs, then just alive. If you ever want to bring your own creations to life, then definitely both. Also, rigging can be really really fun, and relaxing when you understand how it works. It's like the Stardew Valley of the Industry 😅

how is this gonna work with animations for games exactly? is there a way to make various layers into one action and then work on more in the same file?
@PierrickPicaut_P2DESIGNАй бұрын
Basicaly, you use the layers to create your animation and once you're happy with the result you can bake it down (with the NLA) to a single action/animation.
@josal2604Ай бұрын
@@PierrickPicaut_P2DESIGN oooh makes sense. Guessing it'd prob be best to leave the baking till the end so you can make tweaks whenever you feel like something is wrong

@PierrickPicaut_P2DESIGNАй бұрын
It’s very different. Additive won’t work properly with quaternions for example. And it can mess up your scale, pushing it to 2 if you accidentally key it
