The final scene, where there are four guys sitting in the same way they were when they were in the field...and the empty space in the middle, where their buddy should be...hits you in the gut like a sledgehammer.

2:59 The crack of the gun firing, the bullet whizzing, the exit wound, and the blood splattered over the wall, the attention to detail really captures the horror and shock of this moment and the loss of life in an instant moment.

Was there years ago. When I watched this animation there were things that got me and brought back memories. The way the lines in the mountain were drawn. How the valley seemed so immense and empty. The way the gunner was sleeping on his weapon. That quiet moment at the end when their buddy was missing from the middle. This is art. Thank you for making this and allowing me to process feelings I forgot I had. To the other's who can understand this video, remember you're not alone. Peace and love.

And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. You can see at the end how the Sniper was absentmindedly looking at where Ju would be, clearly affected by how he saw Ju died, You can also see how the Spotter/Black 40 is sitting somewhat depressed, if I had to guess it's because he was on watch for that sector and he didn't see the enemy before they shot and killed Ju, so he feels that he let everyone down and that it was his fault in some way that Ju died. The '240 Gunner can be seen wide awake compared to how before he was always tired and would always sleep even if he was supposed to do his share of helping Black 40 Cover the Sector where the enemy attacked from. He probably has some guilt or worry from falling asleep and now he finds it hard to fall asleep since he thinks he might loose another friend. Even though he's safe in the middle of FOB. Although the Main Character seems very unaffected by Ju's death. You can feel and resonate with the characters here, they are well done and expressive in the right ways.

@@HughTrudden The Sniper had to watch Ju's Eye Socket get blown out since he was looking at Ju when Ju got shot, and he was the closest. If I saw one of my closest friends get their head blown open in-front of me, I'd be a bit shaken up to say the least. But I digress, I never said the Sniper was at fault. I dunno if Ju or Mr. Smokes was supposed to watch the Direction that the enemy sniper fired from, but Black 40 the Radio Operator was the only one on watch that was near that angle when the shot was fired. Which you can view as him being responsible for the Sniper being able to shoot Ju without being spotted, or you can point out how Ju wasn't taking cover and was silhouetting himself, or wasn't paying attention and was not watching the horizon. Same could be said for the Guy who was smoking. Makes jokes and asking questions instead of being on look-out.

Its like melancholy and imposter syndrome combined and that's the feeling. When they're gone, your optimistic side says "I'm glad their suffering is over, and that I am alive," but the other part of you believes that feeling sad because you didn't die, is the wrong emotional response. Sometimes I wonder what my friends would've done/been in life. One died so soon in his life I felt compelled to live through some of the things he would've liked to do if he had gotten the chance. I still visit him(his grave) from time-to-time and it never gets easy...but I hope he's proud of me...because I hate this military shit lol. I like how even though the rifleman was casually smoking packs of cigs and the machine gunner was just sleeping, making both seem either very mellow or unassuming for a majority of film. That is until the instant they heard "Contact!" they both snapped back into what they were trained to do as infantrymen and started laying down effective fire at wherever their target was located alongside the marksmen while the radio operator called in for more allies. It really was effective at showing how soldiers act in a scenario like this realistically as most of the time in war is spent 90% of the time shooting the shit with your buddies while also hurrying up and waiting around for something to pop off. But then the other 10% is when shit actually pops off. All in all this was a great short film.

Both the shock and realism of the moment are perfect; I've seen people get shot like that and it's exactly as quick and striking as they show here. It's an amazing film, and is a very strong lesson about complacency in a combat theater. While people are people, and need to relax every once in a while, a combat zone is no place to do so. You can be assaulted from ANY location, at ANY distance, at ANY time and the attitude earlier at 1:01 is just begging your adversary to ambush you, seen later in the film. Situational awareness saves lives, and while it's not possible to do it 100% of the time, you better damn try as more lives than yours may depend on your quick thinking and eagle eyes.

I think this is one of the most realistic videos about war. War is often 80% boredom and 20% fighting for your life. Not a good combination for every human being.Because the 80% boredom can lead to your death in the 20%. And even when you prepare perfectly. You or your friend still can die in the 20%. (Or you are fighting in a war like the ukraine. Where your fighting time will be like 80%. And the chance to die is like 120%)
