The truth behind Pink was that she was just a person. A person who made horrible mistakes but did beautiful things. She’s just an abstract version of us if you think about it. A beautiful, destructive, *human* in the form of gem/diamond.

Rose is a superlative representation of someone raised by abusive narcissists, who recognizes their own abuse well into adulthood, and then tries their best to be better. I feel for her so hard. If that's been your life, no matter how much work you do on yourself, it's nearly impossible to forgive yourself or forget the harm you caused others, even when you know that you'd never had anyone to teach you to be better than your parents. (Remember when Garnet realized that Rose had been following her example all along?) Sometimes it feels like all you can do is run. There is, realistically, no neat or perfect way to break the cycle of abuse, but the person who tries to do that is always seen as disruptive and selfish, even by those who should understand. People are *always* hurt when the scapegoat leaves, and that's one of the reasons abuse is so terrible. Rose tried her best. Steven accused her of having him to clean up her messes; I see her choice as the only option she felt she had to completely end that cycle. She'd tried for five thousand years and still couldn't fix everything, or forget her mistakes and all the people she hurt. So she became someone else completely - not just Rose, but Steven, an entirely new being, capable of fully loving himself and others. Someone on the writing staff knew what it's like from personal experience. The layers to the ugliness of that specific kind of recovery are just too complex for it to be otherwise.

I relate to much, I was born with a narcissistic father, and I believed so hard I’d never be like him. yet then I realize all the harm I’ve caused, every time I’d shout in rage or manipulate others for my own benefit, or make others feel small because of jealousy issues, and abandonment issues, and isolating me and my close ones with me from the outside world, and every time I’d laugh at people who were in pain. And no matter how much somebody tries to hide the harm of being born with somebody abusive, it will still effect them, one way, or another.

I needed to share this: In the cannon art book called : "End of an era" I read that the First pink pearl was actually shattered because she snapped to the diamonds because of how they treated pink (she kinda yelled at blue and yellow about how bad they made her feel and such) I kinda feel this is important because nobody (probably) thought about a Pearl snaping at a diamond since all of them are really well "behaved" and respectful to all diamonds Wether it's their own or any of the Other 3

Exactly Pink Diamond is an interesting and intricate character. She made a lot of mistakes and her behavior can't be completely justified by the other Diamond's abuse but she did try to reverse her mistakes and made an effort to try and protect the ones she loved.

Those bad qualities she had only proved that she's very much human. Humanity has done a great deal of cruel actions in the past, but that doesn't mean there's no room for any goodness in them. When you think about it, she's very much like a rosebush; they have beautiful blooms to look at but they're very thorny at their roots. We should at least appreciate that despite coming from a bad place where all she knew was getting hurt and mistreating others, whether or not she knew of the consequences, she tried her best to overcome her problems even though she wound up pushing away those who cared.

Ah, finally an animatic that doesn’t depict Pink Diamond as a monster! For real tho, I love the way you showed Pink in this animatic. Most other artists are quick to point the blame at her, but you took a step back and looked at the whole picture. You showed how the way she was treated by the other Diamonds affected her, as well as her guilt about what she did to Pink Pearl. The way I see it, Pink wasn’t a villain. She was hurt, and didn’t know how to deal with it so she decided to run from her problems instead of facing them head on. Plus, people tend to skim over all of the good things she did as well. She gave the Earth a chance, even though she knew that the others wouldn’t approve. She tried to reverse her decision to colonise it, but she was too late. She decided to fight for the Earth, because she didn’t want all of the life on it to die because of her selfish actions. Yes, she hid her secret from everyone except Pearl, but she did it to protect them from the Diamonds. You captured all of this beautifully in the animatic- both the good and bad sides of Pink Diamond, and you also showed the positive impact her decisions had. The Crystal Gems happy on Earth, free from their oppressors. Steven, the boy that she gave everything up for. You didn’t paint Pink Diamond/ Rose as a monster. You showed her as the person she was- a broken soul who tried everything to reverse her mistake. Thanks Naomi. It’s great to see an artist who looked at all of the angles. It’s awesome to have you back, and I look forward to your next video. Edit: I think I should make something clear: I do not, repeat DO NOT, condone Pink’s actions or what she did prior to the War. And for those who are saying that abuse isn’t an excuse, at no point in my comment did I say Pink’s abuse at the hands of her fellow Diamonds justified her selfish and childish behaviour. @@fairy5484 Although this isn't directly stated or even lightly implied, I feel like I have a good idea on why she actually didn't want to be around Spinel. Our Pearl knew Spinel, which means that Pink Diamond received Spinel after the incident with Pink Pearl. It would make sense. The Diamonds thought that Pink Pearl was a bad influence, and since she was damaged, they decided that it was about time they gave her a new, more sensible one, so that she would be a good advisor and have a positive influence on Pink Diamond. Still, the Diamonds knew Pink was very playful, so they gave her Spinel. A pink gem, with a goofy and humorous personality. Nothing more than a sentient toy, meant to replace Pink Pearl. But Spinel couldn't achieve that. In the garden Pink already acts a bit more serious, and also tired. What she did to Pink Pearl had such an impact on her, that ever since that incident, she never was the same. Just listen to the argument between Pink and CG Pearl in "Volleyball". Pink Diamond did a complete 180 degree turn when it comes to how she behaved. Spinel herself can be really overwhelming and make those around her uncomfortable (she really doesn't know what personal space is). When you consider that she was just a toy that was meant to replace the older, broken toy (Pink Pearl), and that she even acted in a very similar way, I think you'd see why being around her would only bring painful memories to Pink Diamond. While it is true that what she did to Spinel was very insensitive and bad, I don't think she did it out of malice. It would not be in her character, at any point in time.

She never fixed her mistakes, she never apologized to anyone she hurt, she allowed pearl to feel the way she did, I fully agree with Steven saying she had him to run away from her mistakes, and even if she really truly didn't, bringing a child into that situation is still definitely child abuse. [ this is pretty late but I wanted to add my thoughts ] Personally, I never saw Pink Diamond as the villain. Ngl it’s really frustrating to see people feeling bad for Blue Diamond, Yellow Diamond and White Diamond when they were the ones who abused Pink. Pink is definitely a very complex and honestly, quite a tragic character. I feel pretty bad for her, it’s clear that she was suffering from things like abuse and self-loathing (and I say this because since she was locked away for pretty much acting like herself, she probably grew to hate herself so much. This probably explains why she decided to go into a disguise and decided to make her former self, Pink Diamond, seem like a villain and her current self, Rose Quartz, an Angel) I think it’s pretty hard for some people to like Pink due to what happened with Spinel. I’ve noticed that the hate towards her increased after the movie with Spinel, so I’d like to offer my thoughts on it. Honestly, I can see why Pink decided to leave Spinel. I think people tend to forget that Pink was literally planning a secret rebellion, she probably thought she couldn’t trust Spinel since Spinel could of easily told the other Diamonds. Another thing is that Spinel, at the time, was very immature and playful. I mean, she’s literally designed to be like that since her purpose was to give endless entertainment. Pink probably thought she wouldn’t be cut out for war due to Spinel’s immaturity, so that could be counted as another reason too. Now, does this excuse Pink? No, of course not. What happened to Spinel was bad, but I could honestly see why Pink decided to do what she did. Overall, I don’t think Pink is the villain. I mean, if we really want to point fingers, I’d point it at White Diamond. Pink definitely didn’t have bad intentions and without her choosing to rebel, Earth would of been destroyed, Steven never would of existed, Garnet wouldn’t be a thing, Pearl would still be a servant, Amethyst would of also just been another cog for the diamonds and everyone would still live under the cruel system that was created by the diamonds. Tbh Pink just went about it the wrong way. She definitely was ignorant and selfish and hurt a lot of people, but she also wasn’t inherently bad and genuinely wanted what’s best.

She was definitely immature and reckless, but at the same time, she didn’t have evil intentions, I mean it’s not like she started the war for fun. Regarding Spinel, when you’re planning a secret war, you have to be extremely careful who to trust. The diamonds were abusive to Pink, so I understand why Pink decided to keep it a secret from Spinel because there was a chance she could snitch on Pink and that would result in Pink getting into massive trouble. When you decide to leave an abusive situation, there’s no “right time” you just have to do it, but with doing this, you’ll be forced to make sacrifices along the way. Another thing is, the diamonds literally threw Pink into the dark whenever she “misbehaved.” Gems are portrayed as reflections and refractions of light. That’s all their physical being is. With that being said, they were physically hurting the physical part of her, as well as mentally hurting her. They’ve done this for thousands of years. That’s all she knows. So when she wanted to get rid of Spinel, what does she do? She puts her somewhere where she can’t physically see her. She threw her away just like the diamonds did to her. She sees nothing wrong with this until she gets to Earth and learns that’s not how you treat people. It’s honestly just beautiful written and I think people forget we watch Roses arc backwards. We see her at first after she’s grown, after she’s matured and learned to love people. We end it when she is at her “worst,” when she’s treated like an object and so that’s how she treats people.

When she lost Volleyball she probably had some sort of breakdown. To the point that her powers changed. From destructive tantrums to a healer. Really makes you think It also explains why Pearl and Pink Pearl where fighting in Future. Because Pink Pearl knew Pink that was destructive, childish, and impatient. Our Pearl knew the Pink that she became after losing her friend. Reversed.

Choosing to blame the crystal gems for the rebellion and hiding that she was both rose quartz and pink diamond shows she was selfish. Choosing to bubble bismuth rather than just tell her the truth shows she wasn’t empathetic. She isn’t a bad guy, but her past doesn’t excuse her actions.

@@Overused_Toothbrush I'd say she remained a childish character throughout the story, much like Blue remained empathetic, Yellow remained authoritative, and White remained motherly.What changed was how Pink channeled her childish tendencies. White channeled her motherly demeanor from being used to control to be used for compassion and understanding. Yellow's authoritative demeanor from being used to make people fall in line in fear to encouraging their self discovery, and Blue's spreading of her sadness to ensure everyone grieved as she did to creating joy to help others find peace. Pink likewise channeled her childishness from being used to selfishly destroy to selflessly create. She remained shortsighted, prone to emotional outbursts, and stubborn, but she ensured that those normally negative traits were used towards positive goals. I wouldn't say she was morally grey so much as I would that she still had much growing to do. Her goals were morally just, she just lacked the wisdom needed to ensure her actions lived up to the tall standard she set for herself.

I like at the end it portrays how her story is usually told (backwards) She was treated as an important gem but she was being abused for every wrong thing she did. Like Pink Pearl said Pink was the one who cracked her eye. When she saw what she did when she saw her new Pearl she was sad at first and lived to love her and chances are forgot Pink Pearl. After faking her shattering she lived a life as Rose Quartz. She fell in love with Greg and either couldn’t know what gender her baby was or she had twins. She would either have Steven or Nora from what she said in the tape and background from Greg. In the movie we learned that Rose/Pink had a playmate named Spinel. After this movie people were pretty much on the fact that Pink was evil. In my case, no. I know it sounds wrong but think of Spinel as a toy. Her gem was programmed to be your friend. When she got a colony that was when she “grew up”. Everyone grows away from the past. That includes leaving your toys behind. It was time for Pink to leave Spinel behind. Of course Pink probably didn’t mean to leave her forever. Pink probably just forgot she ever left Spinel. If I should add anything just ask me and I’ll edit this comment.

The art style is so close to the show and I just love Pink Diamond's story. No matter how many times I hear it I love it like it's the first time I heard it. It has always been in my opinion since the reveal of Rose’s past that she is, by far, the most tragic character of the entire series. Especially when you realize that she’s lowkey suicidal. Strive as she did to become someone else and impart the feeling of individualism in her followers, Rose never really believed thats she herself could become anything better. This can be seen in her conversations with Greg and in the end credits song. But she found a way in the end. By giving up her form, her memories, her entire self, she could create Steven a human. A species she has always admired for their innate ability to change and self-invent. And even just to be apart of that through her relationship to Steven, she was willing to die to do so.

So many people has always thought that Pink diamond was the truly evil person because of how her actions affected others, I've wondered she would feel the same. And as I thought of it more and more, I realize she would probably agree. And maybe that's part of the reason why she had Steven. Maybe she wanted to make someone better than her, someone that won't repeat her mistakes. Maybe that's why she made sure that no one knew Rose Quartz was Pink Diamond. Because if Steven knew, he might repeat these mistakes. Like Mother, like son. Now, of course, it's selfish. Why doesn't Rose Quartz do it herself? It's her mistakes, let her fix it. And, I think I have an answer for that. I think she did try to fix it before. There's very little proof of it. The only thing I got is the repeated phrase of "Let me help you!" Anyways, I believe she did try to fix her mistakes before but it backfired on her and made things worse instead of better. She's afraid of making things worse. And so, by having a baby with Greg Universe, who has better record of solving problems than most, it would create child who has the best of both worlds. The kindness and open-mindfulness of Pink Diamond and the problem solving capabilities of Greg Universe. Idk. I'm just bored and when I bored, I think of shit like this.

Besides gems can't die because of time, it was awful but in gem terms not that much as it'd be for humans (besides that was Pink, not Rose) You talk about the corruption like if that was her fault, she didn't say "come and get corrupted", if you are going to war you know you might die and Rose couldn't predict what would happen to them, she literally saved a whole planet. Also, Rose couldn't know that all of those problems were coming back for Steven, she thought it was all over and there were many things that she just wouldn't be able to fix and many other things that she couldn't have known about. The problem is thay they make it look like it was her fault when it wasn't: she can't see future and Garnet can only see possibilites. A lot of how someone thinks of Pink can change once you realize she is framed as basically being the child of the group. She is a gem and very old compared to people, yes. But character wise she was the child in the Diamond group. So like a child she was rash, rebellious, petulant, naive, and extremely emotionally unwise and sometimes selfish. And yet, also like the child she has the strongest will for change and the greatest sense for justice. She's the one to realize that the way the diamonds treat their gems and the planets is wrong and she tries to correct it... but inevitably does it in a way that was messy

Rose/Pink did a lot of stuff that was not right, but based on what we know about the other diamonds, she was treated awfully by them. That doesn’t excuse what Pink did, but that’s all she knew. I don’t think she was the best thing ever, but she definitely grew to learn from her mistakes. At the end, she grew into a better person than when she started out. The way the show portrays her is in the opposite order of development, which isn’t bad, but shows her in a more negative light. I felt it was good intentions but bad execution. It was a dumb idea for someone who's never waged a war to start one. She hurt all involved including herself. The fact she kept most things about herself secret even from Pearl tells me she shut down mentally. Might explain why she never gave Pearl a chance. Probably thought she'd just make more mistakes and hurt another friend. This is why gem society needs psychiatric help. If you think about, Rose was more human than she thought. Thank you for making this beautiful video! It literally and figuratively shatters all of our assumptions of Pink being evil. Pink was manipulated like a puppet of sorts to be evil by mostly White & Yellow Diamonds. The moments that really shook me in the video were when Pink meets Pearl for the first time, the opening scene on Homeworld when Pink has an outburst that would cause the scar on Pink Pearl's left eye, when Pink transforms into Rose Quartz, when Rose forms the Crystal Gems, when she lands on Earth for the very first time, when she meets Greg, & finally, when Steven puts the pieces together & realizes that Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz are one in the same & he is the son of Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz

Rose tried so, so hard to be a good person with absolutely no frame of reference. Her only ""parental"" figures, the Diamonds, were terrible and abusive and toxic. Like most people who suffer abuse, she picked up some of their toxic traits without ever realizing it, like with Pink Pearl. Rose had to completely learn how to be nice to people, to be respectful and kind and not controlling. She even reclaimed some of her trauma, with her healing tears compared to how Blue always *made* her cry. That doesn't mean she didn't hurt others. That doesn't mean she didn't give others terrible trauma as well. But she did try so hard to learn and change and she ended up being a better person than she needed to be. You've gotta give her credit for realizing she was terrible and she was hurting others and genuinely changing, while not *expecting* forgiveness from those she hurt.

Honestly, I think that the view she was completely innocent is really flawed, but at the same time, I kinda like her character for how flawed and complex she is. Personally, I agree with the idea that her flaws are really human (which I find kind of relatable), for a gem. But yeah, as you said, she has done a lot of terrible things, so I can understand why you might think that. Have a nice day. :)

Btw i've been thinking... as I see Rose/Pink as a morally grey character, and I agree with the fact that, consciously or not, she did run away from her problems by forcing Steven to deal with them.... I think that she hated herself, and knew she's done lots of mistakes and never forgived herself for that. Maybe she thought she was unredeemable and thought that she could only make the situation worse. Someone new had to take her place, someone pure who didn't commit a single sin... Someone who could actually make things better, because they ARE better. Because a Diamond will never fully understand lower gems and humans, not like Steven can do.

I love this is the portal of pink’s character perfectly she is a complex character who is abused for a large portion of her life. Pink Diamond is like us, getting so much expectations, but in reality, we're breaking both on the outside and inside and Pink wants to change that, by taking Pearl's advice and being happy on earth, plus she wanted The Earth for the Crystal Gems, not just herself, sure she cracked Pink Pearl's eye but it was unintentional and didn't mean to harm her, and yes she "abandoned" Spinel but she has to do that so she can preserve her and make her safe, and yes she may be bratty and made so much mistakes but when did we not? my favourite parts are two seemingly unconnected scenes. when Pink/Rose made the video for Steven, explaining that she was giving up her form to BECOME PART of him and that when he loved himself, that was her loving him and loving BEING him. and When he refused with his gem after White removed it to try and "get Pink back" you hear a woman's laughter. That's all that's left of Pink, yes- a mother's love for her son. I love that they decided to put her laugh in there. She's gone, and the diamonds learned to accept that in the end yes but her love never fades.

in steven universe we see all of rose/pink's character development in reverse. she starts out as this legendary figure who seems to do no wrong, and little by little you find out about her past mistakes, and what we knew about her earlier is recontextualized as her trying to make up for what she did in the past. but like every other character in the show she's made mistakes that have irrepairably harmed those she loves, and all everyone else can do is move on

Pink was never a villain, and this really showed it. She saw the planets (earth specifically) have beauty, and wanted to protect them. While we have only seen so much about Pink's life being Rose or as a Diamond, (even finding out how she was treated seeing how the Diamonds were to Steven) It really shows how some of her powers became emotion based due to abuse for acting out as a example. This was a really nice animation, and I like the style.

I really don't like how the writers finished Pink's arc. Like they made us see her story backwards and made us hate her. I was one of the haters of Pink when I watched Steven Universe The Movie and Steven Universe Future. This animatic made me realized how abused Pink was before she left Homeworld to build her own Colony and how you showed her good and bad side. I really wanted Steven to realized that Pink, his mother was not the villain but it didn't but I am happy the ending of Steven Universe as it is.

Finally someone who gets it. This is beautiful, and this is what I think Rebecca Sugar wanted to depict of Rose Quartz in the series. That no matter how many things you did GOOD in your life, once the bad things come out, everyone will point and focus on that instead. Rebecca Sugar didn’t want to focus on Pink Diamond, she wanted to focus on ROSE QUARTZ. Because as a diamond, she did many horrible things, so she decided to be Rose and change for the better. These comments saying that “Pink wasn’t evil”, of course she wasn’t! Look at the accomplishments she made: - She stopped the colonization in earth, saving all organic life. - She strengthened the ‘weak’, the ‘unacceptable’ gems in homeworld. - She gave the earth to the Crystal Gems. - She freed the gems who were subjected to things they didn’t want to do. And although corrupted gems are a price to pay, REMEMBER that the diamonds had A CHOICE. They could’ve just left the planet as every homeworld gems fled anyway. Pink isn’t evil. She never was. When seeing this, I now understand why she did bad things. She only learned those things because the other diamonds neglected her. She was a diamond that needed to be treated the same way as Yellow, Blue and White, but she acted too much like a child to the other diamonds. Now, when a child is neglected, they tend to do bad things to others instead of asking for help. So when Pink accidentally broke Volleyball or left Spinel in a garden wasn't because she was a bad person, the diamonds taught her these bad things and Pink did what they did to become a diamond. So when she broke Volleyball's eye, it was because Pink was angry at the diamonds. She was angry because the diamonds probably said, "Your not fit to run a colony" Which enraged Pink and caused her to be violent, but she hurt someone she loved. Now, when Pink left Spinel in the garden wasn't because she was annoying, No, Pink was probably told "if she wanted a colony, she needs to act normal and not like a child" So Pink was forced to leave Spinel, she didn't choose to do it, She was forced to leave her behind. But HEY! That's just a theory, a FILM THEORY!! (That was dumb, I'm sorry) Edit: With all honesty, I want them to find a way to bring her back so she could apologize to everyone shes hurt. I know it won't happen, but I do want them to find a way.

You know I don’t think it is entirely impossible for Pink/Rose to come back I mean some of her Data and Memories are still in Steven’s Gem Steven saw his Mother’s memories memories and her data or her two physical forms when Stevens gem was removed. Remember Gems are like computers even though when Pink/Rose gave up her physical form to give birth to Steven thus wiping her data but if you know anything about computers you can’t completely wipe it some of the old original data will still always be there so I always believed that Pink/Rose still lives on in Steven just can’t comeback because of the missing data and that’s where the rejuvenator comes in but Steven needs to be separated from his gem for it to work...

I do have a theory that is a bit harsh to Steven but in Change Your Mind when is gem is removed and pink Steven is revealed...if you hit Pink Steven with a rejuvenator would that gem come back as Pink till she got her memories back and became one with steven but also giving her a chance to apologize to everyone? Or maybe she could heal Steven from his missing half and have her stay! Idk....just something i thought of lol

Actually I didnt know whether Rose was being selfish or being a hero, but in this video, I could confident say that Rose was fight for her and for all gems and organism who want to live in peace and freedom. That's is so beautiful.🌹

I bet if Pink had felt she would have gotten a good response from the others she would have asked them to give Spinel to another gem who deserved her. But she was probably scared they would have told her “she’s YOURS. We used valuable resources just so you could give them away?”
