There is no hand draw animation in Pakistan and TED Senior Fellow Usman Riaz is breaking new ground by starting the first hand drawn animation there.
Usman Riaz is an artist and Pakistani musician making a worldwide mark with his astonishing and fun-to-listen-to technique. Influenced by percussive guitarists - who move beyond strumming to striking, treating their fret board like the soundboard of a piano - he makes a sound that feels larger than the instrument itself, with a compelling pattern of repetition and variation that harkens to mystical music traditions.
In 2011, a viral video for his song “Fire Fly” helped bring his sound from the small-but-thriving Pakistani music community to a global audience.
Currently directing Pakistan’s first hand-drawn animated film The Glassworker (funded by supporters through Kickstarter) through Mano Animation Studios which he leads, Usman is working with a team of talented animators from his home country, UK, South Africa and Malaysia.
Usman continues to be the youngest TED Senior Fellow
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Art is a subject that was never appreciated here in Pakistan and I suppose this is the push Usman has taken note of took a step forward for what his passion asks about. Really amazed by the inspiration!

It is very inspiring. My name is Usmaan too and I am also Pakistani but I was born in America. Even over here in America art isn’t as appreciated as it is in a place like Japan. Yes there is a lot of animation here, but there is still the stereotype that all animation is childish. I hope one day someone will put their foot down and make a change in the industry

Ever since i was a child, I love anime. Even tho I used to watch also every cartoon, there was always something special about it that i could never understand but as the time went on, i came to know why i love it so much especially the 90s. There was a sense of beauty in it which always had my attention to it. As i grew up and came to know the value of animation in Pakistan up to nothing, i was really disappointed but with time came new ideas like the Commander Safeguard series and burka avenger but that never filled the empty hole in my heart which was later on filled when i saw the trailer of The Glassworker a few days ago on facebook, my eyes got watery and I had this odd sense of pride as i came to know that it`s from Pakistan from all the places. I`m just a bit sad that i came to know about it so late. I`m from Malaysia myself and now i wish that i knew bout it thus i could attend that TEDxKL just for this! Usman Riaz, I wish you and every single member of Mano studios , the best of my wishes

Hamza Bro,thanks for the encouragement.I also want to encourage Mano Team. You put it beautifully that it is a starting point. It is.For anyone to succeed, one has to be consistant, bear the hardships, bow down their heads to the best of the best in this field, the Japanese and learn from them.It will be a continous challenge for each individual of the team.Personally,I think, they need help of the Japanese individuals in this field, and there are so many Japanese who would love working with Mano(even for almost free). And in this matter,Pakistani community in Japan has to play role.Mano's budget would be their greatest challenge and Mano team should learn how to best use help from here and there.Cos anime writing requires long long period.Pakistanis in Japan are rich and generous and they know the culture and language and I think Mano team needs to have close relation with Pakistani community aswell and ready to learn in this long process and ready to travel, sit, eat together with the directors, musicians, and artists, and I am sure, success would follow by itself

Ahhh i m just 17 but but i will definitely contribute to it once i went to uni n have more opportunities. I love drawing anime and most important part i want to be a professional colorist be it a comic colorist or coloring in animation i want to polish it soooo much so that we can compete with japnese coloring style and current art style. Glass worker looks like coloring of 90. But still an anime n pakistan anime

I was thrilled to find out what good quality animation has been made by our Pakistani brother. But one thing is hugely missing: this is your chance to promote Pakistani language AND culture, disappointingly, the Glassworker looks exactly like a Japanese anime in terms of the clothes, buildings and overall surroundings. Please promote true Pakistani culture, I understand your reasons as you explained in the video. But please make next one different..

S K let this one release first, if this one makes money then other artists would flock in and provide many ideas, and I do agree with you, they should add a bit of Pakistani flare, but truth be told that would be too direct and too aggressive of an approach you know, also this film is a passion project sort of a love letter to Ghibli
