He also began to question his passive and mechanical life as one of the small cogs in the wheel for the state, as is common in bureaucratic organizations.
One day, I meet Elise crying in a corner of a church. She is probably between 16 and 7 years old. She cries and asks for help because her family is poor and she cannot pay for her late father's funeral. Toyotaro takes pity on her and gives her some money, and they gradually fall in love with each other. Elise was a dancer in a small theater company, the "Victoria Theatre".
Although they were good friends, an acquaintance who was not pleased with Toyotaro reported to the Japanese Embassy that "Toyotaro often went to the theater and mingled with actresses," which caused the Japanese government to stop funding his studies in Japan and forced him to resign from the bureaucracy.
Although he was in financial difficulties, through the special arrangement of his friend Kenkichi Aizawa, he was assigned to work as a German correspondent for a Japanese newspaper, and was able to make ends meet. Toyotaro and his mother also moved in with Ellis. This was the beginning of their cohabitation. Since they were lovers, they naturally had a physical relationship. Soon after, Elise developed symptoms of hyperemesis gravidarum, and it was discovered that she was pregnant.
At that time, Minister Amakata, whom Aizawa serves as secretary, visits Berlin on an overseas mission (Minister Amakata is compared to Aritomo Yamagata). Aizawa made arrangements to meet Minister Amakata, who asked Toyotaro to translate the documents into German as soon as possible. Toyotaro's workmanship was appreciated by the Minister.
Meanwhile, Aizawa persuaded Toyotaro to give up his love affair with Elise and return to Japan, and Toyotaro reluctantly promised to "cut off this affair. Toyotaro, however, was torn between remaining in Germany with Elise or returning to Japan alone as he had promised Aizawa.
Under such circumstances, the Minister asks Toyotaro, "Do you have no intention of returning to the East (Japan) with me? However, Toyotaro, with his "weak heart," could not decide which way to go, and he collapsed for several weeks in anguish.
When Aizawa came to visit him, he told Ellis what had happened between Toyotaro and the minister. In fact, Toyotaro had agreed to return to Japan. This causes Ellis to suffer from psychosis due to excessive stress.

確かに、みんなそういう印象を持ちますね。森鴎外は自分の体験を元に書いたわけですが、事実とはかなり異なります。それからのエリスという本に詳しいことが書かれています。私もそれを元にアニメを作りました。興味があれば見てくださいね。
