Animation - Return of the Obra Dinn

I created this short film for my college animation class and filmed it with school equipment. Everything is drawn with pencil and paper, with paint marker on acetate for the effects. This is a tribute to the video game Return of the Obra Dinn, created by Lucas Pope ‪@dukope1‬. The music used is the menu theme, composed by Pope. The backgrounds are traced from screenshots of the game and the character is rotoscoped from videos I recorded of myself.

Really awesome being able to pick out specific major scenes, either because they’re so memorable, like the first time seeing the Doom, or because they’re the super useful scenes for investigating, like looking at the shoes hanging from the beds

This is lovely! Trying to imagine how much work went into this, even for 2 minutes, and the animation looks so smooth. I really enjoyed the subdued style of the pencil drawings, also the light effect for the shell is a nice touch.

This is so well done! It really captures the emotions of playing the game, the shock of seeing the kraken for the first time especially. Falling over backwards is exactly what I felt like I was doing in that moment. I also loved the inspector shuffling back and forth trying to see over the side of the ship at 0:36. Jane, why are you so hard to spot in that scene?? And man, that shot at 0:29 where the bullet trail goes straight though their neck! So cool. I think 0:58 is my favorite though. Just standing quietly, watching the scene from the sketch you've been looking at the whole game, but now seeing the artist sitting in front of you. You really captured the melancholy of it all. Love this.

Such a wonderful project! The scenes were captured so well, and the timings of the animations were on point. I've been replaying this game only two days ago, but this video made me feel very nostalgic nevertheless :D

For a moment I wasn't quite sure about the paper-and-pencil usage, but they work almost PERFECTLY with the game's actual visuals! Not to mention how you got everything to sync to the music PERFECTLY and truly capture the feeling of poking around every nook and cranny of every death scene!
