May I ask how you make your drawings look like they're dancing and alive? Not just on this one, but when I look at your other artworks (especially your character design of song of achilles, that's my favourite) I feel like everything is moving even if it's just an illustration.
@lemoncholy
@lemoncholy 3 жыл бұрын
This is a great question but also one that's difficult to answer. Here are a few notes: - I find that doing 1-3 min gesture drawings help me loosen up, in addition to studying models in motion (usually from video/photo references but sometimes in real life). If I don't feel like life drawing, sometimes I'll break down / trace drawings from artists I admire for practice, to help me observe all the decisions they're making. - Focusing on silhouette and contour (as opposed to volume). Contour drawing is a little unpredictable, but it's this approach that helps me create more interesting drawings. It can also help you focus on design, rather than getting bogged down with all the complexities of human anatomy. - Understanding the mechanics of contrapposto - Drawing a line of action through my characters helps me focus the movement in their poses. (@Mofe Dawodu I think this may be what you're referring to?) - Focusing on line quality (thick vs. thin, straight vs. curved, concave vs. convex) - You might also want to try listening to emotionally intense music or acting out your poses out before you draw them - anything to get you in the mood.
@orpheus6398
@orpheus6398 3 жыл бұрын
@@lemoncholy omg thank you for answering, I was actually tracing one of your drawing just now, trying to figure out how you do your lines haha. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.

Oh, I’m so glad this was recommended to me!! As a student who’s studied Film Studies and who has _just_ finished my (undergrad) thesis on Chinese animation and the history of Chinese animation, the more painterly style of art you showed really reminded me of Chinese ink-wash animation! The aesthetics of such minimalistic art is really cool. Very reminiscent of the philosophy behind ink-wash paintings: to capture the feeling of something, rather than the real look of something. For anyone curious about animation history and stuff, the examples of ink-wash animation I can think of are: Little Tadpoles Look for Mama: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZPYhp2Yi9qkh9k The Herd Boy’s Flute: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmTQiWOci9B5pq8 Feelings from Mountain and Water: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXzcqmtvmNabl6c Ink-wash didn’t become a dominant style of animation within China for various reasons, despite their biggest advocate, Te Wei, really pushing for it initially as a uniquely Chinese animation style, but it’s also been cool seeing it kind of return with new animations such as _Fog Hill of Five Elements:_ kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXOzmpihpsaZj5Y Sorry to suddenly barge in here and dump all this ahaha. I just got really excited by the connections that can be drawn with animation! But it’s just also really cool watching your process and exploration of a new animation style. The end result looks stunning!
@lemoncholy

No worries at all, this is wonderful! I took guo hua lessons when I visited China a few years back and that style has since influenced my art. As an animation student, the philosophy behind it resonated with me (which as you say, emphasized a stronger focus on impression than accurate representation). I'm unfamiliar with animation in China, so thank you for sharing resources!

I know he's holding a ciggie and it seems like a small detail, but with a mysterious figure, the only thing you have to read is his hand, and it looks like he's extending his fingers and makes him look more like a train conductor. I love this work and it is incredibly inspiring! The swagger of this shot is just omg.
