I’m convinced “Troy” is just Hermes incarnate. Incarnating as a mortal just so he could play himself in a musical is totally something Hermes would do!

8:22 actually no, she isn't cursed to fall inlove with anyone who ends up on her island. that's from PJO. however i still agree with your opinion, because she hasn't been raised, she hasn't had any socialisation, so i think in her brain, she doesn't know what is right or wrong - in her mind, she just wants to be loved. of course her actions are disgusting and wrong, but i see it in the way that in 'not sorry for loving you', she's genuinely confused and upset - because she doesnt know why her love is wrong, she doesnt know why her love is unwanted.

I will say that Epic is kinda vague on whether or not they canonize the SA part of the story, so she might be a bit better when it comes to actions in Epic in that aspect. Not that everything else is okay, no, she's still a bad person, but I don't think she's anywhere near as bad as the Calypso who was canon to the Odyssey

i’m gonna bring my relevant comment over here too!: you’re right! we filmed this shortly after the saga dropped, and there is a lot of misinformation floating around the epic fandom that leads people to think certain things are canon when they aren’t! I am going back and doing a DEEP DIVE (a time dive, if you will) n’ reading The Odyssey again so I can speak better to the OG canon VS. the canon of reinterpretations 🔥 thanks so much for watching 🙌🏻

Exactly! I’ve never been a Calypso fan. I just hate characters who do bad things and are just oblivious to it for so long, and then lose it when they’re forced to confront reality! So much of the fandom is “awww, poor Calypso” but to be honest, whenever I listen to her songs I just find her aggravating. And Odysseus saying “I love you” to her just feels so icky.

@@Writingthisat3am She's got a sad backstory, but I don't like her because she didn't try to fix herself. She didn't redeem herself by sending him off in good faith. Instead she doubled down on only thinking about what she wanted.

If she had the emotional development to gaslight I might agree but from the mouth of Jorgenbong Jalapeño himself “she’s like a child in a woman’s body.”

I'm so happy to be here! I theorized that Calypso gave a voice to the Sky and Sun and talked to them in her low moments. Now that Odysseus has added his voice to her life, their background vocals sound like him and her, the only voices she's ever known (well, before someone arrived that day). I just NOTICED, Odysseus holds a torch during Dangerous to draw the hydra's light of sight, and then gives them a good whack! So Ares might be respecting him a bit more now, not fleeing from a monster that's difficult to fight (granted this is a baby rank version of what Scylla is, but yeah). Odysseus is conserving energy once Poseidon shows up, based on the slow, steady heartbeats we hear. If he can avoid a direct confrontation and just go home, yay! But he has been planning to fight Poseidon however he can, to get him to go away or stand down. For seven years, he has heard all of POSeidon's taunts in his head about ruthlessness and finishing off his enemies. He gave his enemy one chance to retreat beneath the waves, but Polyphemus is blinded and traumatized by the event. Poseidon can't go home without avenging his boy.

I like to think Ody’s “I love you” was an intentional rugpull in response to her confining him and not letting him leave

Also‼️‼️ Calypso is not in fact cursed to fall in love with anyone who arrives on her island. That is just something some interpretations add to justify her actions. (Percy Jackson ahem ahem) I don’t think epic is one of those adaptations. (Correct me if I’m wrong)

I understand the first song’s intentions and why it exists. I think it would have worked a bit more if we had more insight or learnt more about Calypso and why she was on the island in the first place. Still it doesn’t justify a thing she’s done. Man, women or anyone, imprisonment and gaslighting is wrong. I mean, there are people in real life who have gone through so much worse than her in a shorter amount of time, and they didn’t go to these lengths. I just think her arc and Odysseus’ time there was a bit rushed, so I don’t feel the impact of his 7-year isolation.
