Important to note that the animators aren’t always collaborating. The animatics are based on the songs, the original mythology, the animator’s interpretation, and the information Jorge gave about his process of making it. They are not necessarily “cannon” One of the details animators keep in mind a lot is how all vocals are diegetic. And are always from actual people (mostly the soldiers) except in the presence of a god cause they can just summon their own backing vocals/chorus.
@thelocalshoop4 ай бұрын
^ there are exceptions of course, those being animatics commissioned by jorge himself! these are the animatics that show up on the official livestreams- its where the canon designs and visual-only interactions can be found (such as the god games ending, or certain details of mutiny). this is usually the only time collaboration is happening between jorge and the artists, and even though artists can make official animatics they can still choose to make their own unique animatics. i love seeing the various designs and interpretations its one of my favorite things abt this fandom!!

10:41 Important thing to note here: whenever a mortal character (like Oddyseus) is singing, any background vocals are being sung in-universe by people in the background, and whenever a god is singing (like Zeus in 'The Horse and the Infant'), the background vocals are being generated by them; also, each character has a signature instrument that plays whenever they are singing in the musical, and there are *many* recurring motifs throughout 17:25 Just gonna state for the record because this has been a thing before, Mirxi's name is pronounced 'Mirchi' 31:14 Neat thing in 'Warrior of the Mind': When Athena first sings the 'Warrior of the Mind' lyric, she ends it by holding the note, but when Oddyseus joins in, he ends the line in a run, and the second time they sing it together, they both end the line in a run; and when she sings it one last time at the end of the song, she sings it alone and still ends on a run, showing that Oddy's attitude was starting to rub off on her :) 39:27 This beginning part of the song features a pretty infamous recurring theme in the musical known as 'The Danger Motif'. a lot of people had a hard time trying to find where it was used, but this is the first instance of it 48:04 Not Poseidon (yet). There's two different accounts about who threw Astyanax from the battlements - Pausanius says he was thrown by Neoptolemus (son of Achilles) while "illiou persis" aka "The Sack of Troy" (author unknown) says it was Odysseus who did it. Either way, his fate was debated by the Greek war council, and the threat of him becoming an avenging son was what ultimately led to the infant being thrown. Edit to Add: Interestingly, the two accounts about the death of the son of Hector are only found in those two poems, which were written after Homer's Illiad. Technically that makes those accounts in-Era fanfiction... take that how you will.

I haven’t seen anyone say it, but the apple could also be a reference to how Athena tried to get the golden apple alongside Hera and Aphrodite, but the apple went to Aphrodite as she promised to give Helen of Troy to the guy who had to give the apples to any of the three Goddess, declaring the one who had it be the “most beautiful Goddess” ever. If memory serves me right

Mircsy's design of Polyphemus takes aspects of Poseidon's creations and combines them. A tentacled face like a sea creature, and hooves of a horse. (I commented this before you mentioned it. It went over my head until I read about the reason, so my dumb brain assumed most people wouldn't know.)

The glasses are actually in homage to the singer for Polites! Every character is modeled facially after their singer to an extent. Also, in the song Remember Them, the reason Odysseus doesn't want to kill the Cyclops is because of Polites. Polites was his best friend and a very kind and loving individual, which was shown with the song Open Arms about just taking things easy for once and not resorting to violence immediately if there's another way. With his friend dead, Odysseus remembers his lessons of kindness and mercy and is deeply hurt that such a sweet soul had to die because of the rage of a monster when the Cyclops could've just taken the trade. Athena's lessons as a Goddess of Wisdom and War are to never leave things unfinished but Odysseus is blinded by grief and wastes time trying to teach a lesson where there should be none. Athena abandons him who can't follow her teachings anymore, and Odysseus is left fully at the mercy of the God's who show none at all

Ayyyyy Airier is joining the winion army! You'll love it dude... It is very reminiscent of Peter and The Wolf with how Jorge uses specific instruments to identify certain characters and it is reminiscent of Lin Manuel Miranda's work (Hamilton, Encanto, Etc...) as well with the pacing and sound! It truly is a masterpiece and it isnt even finished yet! Jorge is truly a genius.

14:50 Fun fact, Most of the characters are designed after their voice actor! So Odysseus looks like Jorge! Polites looks like Steven Dookie who also wears glasses. Every character has their own instrument too. Odysseus has an acoustic guitar and an electric guitar, Athena has a piano, not sure what Polites instrument is though. Eurylochus stands out though because he has the crew backing him up. 47:53 Those are actually other cylopses. Polyphemus doesn't pray to Posidon until after Odysseus and his men leave
@SKW2124 ай бұрын
The Lotus Eaters did in fact come before Polyphemus' island. The main difference is that the musical starts with Odysseus' journey instead of with Telemachus, and for obvious reasons cuts off some of Odysseus' encounters (like the Laestrygonians - though they are indirectly mentioned; I'm at the 23:19 mark when writing this, so I don't know if you will reach to that part in this video). There's also a small inside joke about the musical, related to the man who died at Circe's island: he was supposed to be mentioned in the musical and even be one of the main 'characters' there, though he was scrapped out, so the writer also didn't mention his death, you only know about it if you pay attention to how many people died before getting to Circe's island and after. Editing to mention, the characters' design is actually based off the singers' actual looks.

Funfacts! There is a danger motif played everytime there is danger near, each charchter has there own instrument. Expect one person who just has backing vocals. And the rules of this world are gods can make there own backing vocals, but mortals have ti have others make them. Like when ody speaks the crew backs him up, or polties had tbe lotus eaters. But the gods such as athena dont need it! Also I do request you dont talk about too much about the future just because all of epic hasent been released yet and I havent read the odyssey yet so kinda spoilers lol. Anyways you know I love your content and Ive been asking for this for months so thank you SO much. If you wish to split up your watchs to saga then the cyclopse saga has one more song, the next one. The next one is the ocean saga with 4 songs, then the circe saga with 4 more, then the underworld with 3, and finally the newest saga/thunder saga has 5. I think there 3 more sagas that have yet to be released :) [also the cyclopse saga and the troy saga were recently remastered to if you decide to listen to this in your free time please listen to thise instead as the orginals were not giveing the creators his royalties] when your cuahht up I truely reccmend chrcking out the creator/odyseus as he is AMAZING and funny and has but so much thought and detail into his songs that I cant even fit here and just trust me when I say there is so much beneath the surface to the music, its truely genuis. Another reactor made a small comment about Odysseus that I think sums up his main flaw. When he was arguing with Athena, he said, "Who do you think you are?? You're just a human." Which sums up Odysseus and many other greek heroes. He doesn't realize that he's just human. He's so prideful and arrogant that he thinks he's on par with, if not better then a god, which he soon realizes with how absolutely fucked over he gets by several different gods/demi gods (Circe) he is not.
@Airier4 ай бұрын
Yup. Hubris is a MAJOR theme in a lot of Greek writing. Oddly enough, Odysseus is one of the least offenders (even though it is one of his main flaws). Although here (in Epic), I'd say his bigger issue is running in without a plan and then making one up on the spot.
@_xV01Dx_5 ай бұрын
Jorge did initially write in a song about his men (especially Elpenor and Perimedes) that takes place with the lotus eaters. It was Elpenor saying they should just leave Perimedes there whilst Odysseus disagreed. It was later cut and just left as a draft and Elpenor was kinda cut from the musical and we don't hear from Perimedes until The Thunder Saga.

Adoring watching your reactions- most people who listen to Epic aren't super familiar with the story of the Odyssey, so it's super cool to see someone who knows the story of it already! (Edit: Listening to some of the comments you made about mythology, whenever you get to the song "Ruthlessness" I highly recommend checking out AnniFlamma's animatic! I believe in the playlist you're using they include a different one, but there's something you were excited to see during one of the songs that is showcased a lot in Anni's version that might be a fun bonus for someone who knows their way around Greek mythology.)

Acutally Polyphemus ate six of oddyseus’ men in the cave. And those eyes were other cyclops who came check on Polyphemus, oddyseus giving his name as ‘nobody’ meant that Ployphemus said ‘nobody hurt me’ as in he wasn’t hurt, not that ‘nobody’ hurt him. I will say that depending on which animatic you watch, you will get different interpretations or little details on the characters. I believe the next one after this, Goodbye will be one such one. I’d give a watch to more of the animatics form different artists in your free time.

@rachelfurniss87685 ай бұрын
Important thing that I don't see a lot of people mentioning: Odysseus doesn't choose "mercy" at the end. He chooses spite: to let the cyclops live, blind and in pain, rather than finish off the danger he poses bc he wants the cyclops to remember what Odysseus took from him in return for the death of his friends. It's why *spoilers* Poseidon doesn't believe his "apology" in the Ocean Saga. Bc Posiedon knows exactly why that happened. It's probably part of the reason Athena got so mad at Odysseus after he announced his name to the Cyclops. He keeps trying to hide behind his grief and claim it was a mercy, but the truth of the matter is that he made a dumb decision just to make his enemy suffer and it endangered everyone around him and went against her teachings.

fun fact: there are other animatics that give the cyclops a more standard design. The specific animatics used here for suvive and polyphemus are fan favourites because of how CREATIVE they are with the cyclops' design, giving it a terrifying monstrousness that reflects its parentage while also displaying how its pain at the death of one of its sheep is genuine and how odysseus and his men aren't COMPLETELY innocent here even if they didn't mean any harm.

I don't know if it's what was intended, but the apple being involved with Warrior of the Mind, and Athena holding it at the end, reminds me of the Apple of Discord that originally (arguably) caused the Trojan war. Athena was one of the three goddesses who claimed it, and she was NOT the one who won. So it symbolically puts even more weight on "Don't dissappoint me."
