Having read almost the entire manga I can tell you this: It is a journey. An epic of increasingly alien sci-fi societies and concepts of post-humanism. At times it is difficult to sit and read though, and at other times I can't put it down. I recommend the first series at least.

I used to read this manga back in high school, and it definitely left an impression on me. For one, it kick-started my love of rocket hammers and elbow blades. For two, I quickly learned to appreciate the grungy details in the cyborgs, cobbled together with parts salvaged from the scrapyard. Even though I know this kind of setting has been done before, I still feel like there's nothing else like Battle Angel. I get why James Cameron has such a love for this series, it's a series that's easy to fall in love with. It'll always be a big part of my teenage years, and I'm really looking forward to the movie next year.

Battle Angel Alita is one of my all-time favourite manga, with an incredibly interesting world, tons of fascinating characters and great action. And the sequel/continuation Last Order, while not as good, still has some of the most out-there trans-humanism ideas I've seen in any media, as well as some of the most over-the-top action ever, and is worth a read in it's own right, even if it isn't a classic like the first series. :-) The OVA's are incredibly distilled versions of the first 2 volumes, and miss a lot of the really over-the-topp stuff that's in the manga, but they are still good fun and stay true to the spirit of the manga imo. :-)

Battle Angel is an ok adaptation of the original source, but it only covers the first 2 volumes of the manga. The art of the OVA doesn't really capture the feel of the manga. Gunnm/Battle Angel Alita really deserves a better anime adaptation. I really hope that James Cameron does the movie adaptation justice. Using the first 4 volumes is pretty good as it gives a decent amount of the early story.

I enjoyed it. It improved upon the OVA's weaknesses, expands on some of the lore and very rarely compromises on the source material. It follows the anime's story pretty close, with some manga-exclusive elements added in. The surprisingly rare changes are either just plain for the better, allowances to expand the story or out of necessity to nudge the movie down to a PG-13 rating. There's a lot of Hollywood tropes that would've socketed easily into this story, which were thankfully absent. If I had any complaint, it's that I felt Ido should've had a stronger action presence. His roll as a father-figure is well represented, but you don't get much sense of him being this capable Hunter Warrior. I think Alita may actually swing the rocket hammer more times than Ido does in the movie.
@MelonTartVA5 жыл бұрын
@@ClockworkBard well, i appreciate that they gave Ido more of a backstory. Cuz Ido's character felt boring in the original OVA, while here he had a defined personality and his protectiveness of Alita made more sense.

Crazy thing is, I remember seeing Avatar and picking up on some SERIOUS Battle Angel vibes from the set design (well, what sets there were) and other things. The human spaceships, the inside of some looking very much like the interior rooms of Ketheres, the holograms depicting brains and spinal columns in great detail, the gargantuan demolition vehicles, looking up and seeing Jupiter and its moons in the sky... granted, this stuff is more reminiscent of Last Order than the first manga, but it's exactly the sort of imagery you might expect to see in a live action Battle Angel movie. JC held off on making a Battle Angel movie until he felt the technology was advanced enough to do the world justice and not make it look silly. Avatar was basically him trying out some new toys to see if he COULD pull off a Battle Angel movie, which was supposed to be next, but... for better or worse, Avatar did so insanely well at the box office and so many people loved it that he basically HAD to put Battle Angel on the backburner while churning out more Avatar movies. And so here we are, almost a decade later. But at least the wait seems to have paid off. This comic has always been very important to me, and with half of the characters looking like half-exposed Terminators, it just seems like something meant to be. But with JC ultimately kinda taking a back seat on this one, will it be good? One can hope. It SHOULD be amazing.

This is one of my all-time favorites! I can still remember recording it off the Starz Action Channel back in the 90's and sharing it with my friends. I went on to read the manga and play the awesome PS1 game. Actually looking forward to the live action adaptation for once.

piloctor15 given Japanese phonetics and the fact that the cat was male, it's entirely possible that "Gally" is meant to be read as "Gary"

This just so happens to be in my top three manga, I watched the OVA years ago and picked up the manga after to see where the story went so I guess it worked well as an extended advert :p

Fun fact for those that saw the live-action movie - apparently the Bounty Hunter that helped out with that fight made the puppy into one of his robo-dogs behind the scenes. Edit - Found the vid! kzbin.info/www/bejne/hImYfqaPrNmFqtk
