Today for Hosoda Month, I present a review of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time! Subtle in its message, this is arguably Mamoru Hosoda's best written feature film.

I'm seriously disappointed there's no video theorising over the anime's many subtle hints that could make the movie even deeper. The ending is so open to be interpreted yet no one's actually doing that. Why can't we have an extremely detailed analysis just like the ones for Undertale?

Mau Jo I hadn't thought of that. One could argue that Summer Wars takes place in the same universe but further in the future where timetraveling is now an option.

Aunt Kazuko is not Makoto. It's Kazuko, the protagonist of the original novel. What many don't realize is that this film is not an adaptation of the novel, but a direct sequel. Read this and you'll understand better. The ending is actually pretty sadistic when you realize all this stuff www.reddit.com/r/FanTheories/comments/yeeoi/the_girl_who_leapt_through_time_isnt_some_gushy/

I think that's a terrible theory because that would imply Makoto would have been able to see herself during all her time leaps. This wasn't 'Back to the Future' style time travelling. Makoto would be in the position of herself of wherever she was in that moment of time, not a separate entity or body.

I was thinking that Makoto was supposed to have died and Chiaki actually went back in time to save her. I thought that's what was meant by him saying "I'll be waiting for you" at the end when he hugged her, because Chiaki would now be able to see Makoto alive in the future. It only makes sense considering this is after Chiaki told Makoto to not get hurt by jumping in front of things in lieu of what Makato was hoping would be Chiaki reconfessing his love to her. I thought the story was really being weaved by Chiaki as an effort to save Makoto from getting hit by the train. After all, Chiaki did seem to be a regretful and moody figure when he was explaining the future to Makoto. Regarding speculations w/ little evidence from the film: Maybe Chiaki wasn't allowed to directly save Makoto, thus letting her fall on the charging ball device to "mistakenly" give her the powers. There's also the question of how Chiaki was getting punished in the future for telling Makoto of the future before she had leaped for the final time - how was he punished? Maybe the aunt had a connection with this event, and maybe she was meant to serve as an authority figure meant to control Makoto because of Chiaki indirectly giving Makoto leaping powers - so as not to negatively affect the future.

I love this interpretation the most, and it makes so much sense. When Makoto finds the object, it seems like Chiaki dropped it purposely.

disagreed, *Wolf Children* was his only film that didn't make me want to face palm myself into oblivion lol Hosoda has easy to watch movies but nothing he does really stands out. Very formulaic and easily predictable. enjoyable? yes. Good? not really.

There's the theory that auntie Witch _is_ Makoto's future self. Then, if in the future she gained the ability of indefinite time-leaping, she would be in a bootstrap paradox, _having_ to go back in time to talk to her younger self and fulfilling Chiaki's promise.

My theory is that the girl Makoto represents the Now and the boy Chiaki the future. The film is a big metaphor, it isnt here to hypothesize about time travel but rather to implement the importance and meaning of the existence of art and history (the painting), that we must cherish it. Chiaki tells Makoto that his world doesn't have a lot of people, there is a lot of nature.. thus saying that his world is post apocalyptic and it all happened because just one peace of art and history got lost, and so an apocalypse took place. This also shows us how important every single one of us is. One breath will have an affect on the other side of the world its not a matter of if but rather when, thus the saying time waits for no one. It is what you do with the time you have that changes the world for better or worse. At the very end Chiaki says he will be waiting for her, that meant that the future depends and is created by whatever the now does and what history remembered , they are like two ends of a string. They never kiss because the future is bearly visible or known for the now, we can only guess what future holds, it is far away in some sence. Detail scene: they show us that Makoto died as one possibility because she wasn't thinking about the broken break of the byke and was rushing forward way too fast thus we got extinct and a new form of life began (the train).

lol.... my brain is telling me the bad ending... cause her aunt restore a painting while waiting for someone then now makoto making sure "the painting will get through the future" meaning she'll restore the painting while going for someone (which is chiaki) .. and chiaki is time leaping so you know what i mean..

I thought the music was great! & the other characters too! Specially chiaki, he was so relatable & he just felt real. Sometimes anime characters make me cringe because they do things that just don’t seem normal or it comes off as cartoonish but Makotos friends made me want to be there with them.

Actually I have watched the anime movie first then I dicided to buy the book for reading the ending in details but everything is totally different, from the name of character to the content then the plot twist in book the main character doesn't leap through time so many times like this... Ugh and in the book there has one more story behind this story end I didn't get it and still confused lol.

*The Girl Who Leapt Through Time* was very uneventful, with time travel being used in a way done countless of times. It did nothing new, from the use of time travel to the cringe worthy love triangle nonsense. The only thing it had going for it was the nice audiovisuals. 5/10

SilverVeil There's no love triangle... Plus time travel hans't really been done that often in anime. There is a climax in the story, with a subtle underlying theme. Also it's only an hour and a half, do you expect it to have multiple events without having a story/message?
@zeadsi
@zeadsi 10 жыл бұрын
***** not in the traditional sense of a "love triangle" but the platform was there. "Plus time travel hans't really been done that often in anime" when did I say anime? I said "time travel being used in a way done countless of times"... I'm referring to all forms of media that deals with time travel. This movie uses the vanilla of time travel, being no different from others. "There is a climax in the story, with a subtle underlying theme" there's absolutely nothing subtle about having "time waits for no one" written on a board moments before the actual leap of time lol It's shoe horned in and felt artificial. Like a movie about life quoting Biblical verses. Besides going back in time to increase the times you can jump was such a huge asspull that there's no need for a set number of leaps you can take, simply reset by jumping time again. That "climax" broke any immersion of plausibility the movie had going for it. "Also it's only an hour and a half, do you expect it to have multiple events without having a story/message?" multiple events? no I simply expect a movie to capture a believable and satisfying story without being juvenile about it's message. *Ghost in the Shell*: 1hr 20mins *Grave of the Fireflies*: 1hr 28mins *Eve no Jikan*: 1hr 46mins *Wolf Children*: 1hr 50mins *Princess Mononoke*: 2hrs within their time periods they managed to tell a compelling story while setting themselves apart. And that's just to name a few. Hell even *House of Small Cubes*, which was only 10 minutes long, captured in depth characterization without even muttering a word, so what's your point?

Does film have to be "big" like Avengers to be great? I don't think so. And if you think this film is uneventful, you should watch Makoto Shinkai's films.
@zeadsi
@zeadsi 9 жыл бұрын
+Kezia Hutabarat The Avengers? Why would you compare a movie like that to this? I get what you're trying to say but your example is far fetched. Also when were we talking about the scale of the movie? You're bringing up something that wasn't a part of the conversation. "And if you think this film is uneventful, you should watch Makoto Shinkai's films." The irony is too much. The man that dedicates all his film to timed events that decay or flourish a relationship is used as an example of "uneventful".
@blehbleh8143
@blehbleh8143 9 жыл бұрын
While Avengers are too far-fetched, I still disagree that a film has to be eventful to be good. In that case, you have to watch The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller, and classics like Taxi Driver. Define uneventful then. You called a film with a concrete story of a girl who misuses her power and learns from it yet you said it's an irony to call a man who only makes a film of two or more saying pretentious poetic shits and writes his story in a speed of a snail.
