I watched this anime and then desperately searched for the manga series in a scanlation. After binging on that, I found another series that gives a very similar feel: Aria. It is also about a world that is inundated with water, except that that world is Mars. In brief, the planet had been terraformed, but a miscalculation about the amount of water available resulted in its being entirely flooded except for inhabitable islands. The series centers around the city of neo Venezia, where tourists from the Earth come to visit and experience with the unhurried life in a city of canals. The characters that we follow are girls who are training to become guides for tourists on gondolas. Unlike the gondoliers of our own Venice, these girls are called Undines. It is a beautiful and gentle series, sumptuously drawn in both the manga and anime.

It's one of my all-time favourites. All three seasons and the specials of the anime are great. They are getting better over the runtime, in fact. The other work of Kozue Amano, 'Amanchu', has a different setting but quite the same feel. Both the manga and the anime. Highly recommended.

This manga was my introduction to slice of life sometime back in the late 90s or early 2000s. I had just learned how to find anime and manga translations on IRC (Which makes me learn more toward early 2000s and freshman year of high school.) and didn't have to just take what i could get from late night sci fi saturdays or thursdays on STARS while recording them on VCR. It's been 20+ years since i read or watched it, but I will always remember reading a certain chapter where Alpha dances. There was almost no dialog in the entire chapter, just pages and pages of her dancing. I still cant describe how it made me feel. I will go years without thinking of YKK, but whenever i do think about it, i have nothing but fond memories. Thanks for reminding me of it again.

I don't leave comments as often as I should any more but thank you. I have known about this series for over a decade gleaning little scraps here and there. I can remember in the past where there was no translation and few scans thank you to all the people who made this a thing that people half way around the world can read.

"holsters carry cameras instead of guns" Actually, even the early scene of Kokone coming to deliver the camera shows her with a gun in a holster (in this video, that scene is actually shown but is cut just before the wind reveals the gun and holster behind her back). When Kokone knocks on the door of Alpha's house, Alpha picks up her own gun and holsters it behind her back before opening the door. Alpha had been drinking coffee inside her cafe, and you can see on the table her coffee cup and the gun. These two robotic girls have their first encounter while prepared for violence and lawlessness. It is done matter of factly, but it also establishes the atmosphere of this world where civilization is gradually breaking down . We actually see no violence between people in the anime nor in the manga, but it is established that the potential for violence exists. This is especially true for Kokone, who travels to deliver things. Because she must travel to remote places while carrying potentially valuable items, she is always ready to defend yourself. There is one scene in the manga where another robot girl gives her a surprise greeting. She sneaks up on Kokone to embrace her behind her back, but the scene quickly changes when Kokone shifts her position and presses the muzzle of her gun into the other girl's stomach.

On one of the first pages of the manga, when Alpha goes to Yokohama to buy coffee beans, there's a street scene with a shop to one side advertising .45ACP ammunition for sale as well as rifles on display. The vibe of the story and the art style changed noticeably after the first few chapters though.

This is one of the manga that I picked up solely based on nothing more but the cover art of Alpha and her scooter. Because of the title (YKK) it was at the tail end of the many walls of manga titles I had browsed through. "Do not judge a book by its cover" we are told... ...and yet, the cover is the only thing we got when the book itself is shrink wrapped by the store. The other title I picked up based solely on the cover art was The Gods Lie. This was when I was at the neighborhood library and the book was on a display shelf. This time the book was not shrink wrapped but I didn't need to page through it. Checked it out, read it and bought my own copy.

A true hidden gem, watching the OVA or reading the manga is the closest one can get to the feeling of walking to an outside balcony and just taking a huge breath of fresh air from the beach or mountains while admiring the scenery without actually doing so. It's like the perfect middle ground between Aria and Girl's Last Tour (both also really good, read them), things may not be fantastic, but it doesn't have to be, enjoy the coffee. 10/10

Thanks, this is and always has been my favorite manga since I read the first story as it appeared in monthly Afternoon. I have the OVA and the radio play CD's, but they are a pale reflection of the manga. I write, "read" but the panels are each stand alone moments. Even the rare bits of dialog are like insects trapped in amber -frozen in time faded yet pristine. It's worth reading in the original Japanese. Judging from the commentary something was lost in the translation into English, but I'll leave that for those who read this comment to discover for themselves.
@Nowhere-from28 күн бұрын
Nope, the OVAs were just as artistic as the manga and successfully conveyed its feeling. The area where the OVAs were lesser than the manga was in quantity, far far less. It simply couldn't help it. A product this artistic could never become a blockbuster. Regarding reading it in Japanese, just do it if you're young with plenty of time to waste. No need to get this worked up in each detail and word. The moment you turn it into religion the moment you screw it, gone is the relaxation and joy, obsession takes over. It's a safe bet that the Buddha, Jesus Christ and others would disagree with the endless volumes of books written on their comments and opinions.

I suppose this manga was ahead of it's time, as I've heard quite a lot about it in the last few years, but it's literally from decades ago. It seems to resonate a lot with young people now who find themselves living through a slow apocalypse but life also goes on, and often has lovely moments. I guess the manga is not meant to be literal about our world, but it's hard not to see it that way.

This was absolutely lovely and I'm gonna HAVE to watch/read it, now. Only one caveat- While digital cameras, indeed, weren't NEW in the 90s- They were very rare, very expensive, and hadn't yet approached the type of quality 35mm could produce. Kind of treated as a joke at that point, still. Hell, for reasons of both quality and cost there were still a lot of organizations that hadn't even moved on to color film. I was a yearbook photographer back around '95-96 and we couldn't budget the chemical/equipment cost yet for color development. A digital camera would have been both too expensive and too low-resolution.

The anime is actually a pretty good way to start. The music is interesting and beautiful and really sets the tone. It is a short OAV series, that doesn't really spoil anything because this is one of the most gently set Slice of Life series in existence. The experience of the anime does not detract at all from the manga, even as you later read about the same scenes that you saw in the anime. The manga series is very long, and eventually you understand that a great deal of time is passing while Alpha remains in a strange way anchored into the past. She doesn't change while everything changes around her. The ocean erodes a cliff until it collapses close to her house. Children of her acquaintance grow up and become adults and their children eventually show up at the cafe. The robots go about their timeless lives while the humans rush about their own lives of constant change. In some ways, it is rather like the contrast between humans and elves.

Great series worth highlighting especially since the Steamgirl is leaving and people will be missing her next steam sale. I feel like she gave off vibes from this series. That said I think you over thought the digital camera a bit. A 1990s digital camera would have had severely limited storage space as well. Data storage is cheap now and even when shooting raws you can fit thousands of photos on an sd card, but back in the 90s you were very limited.

Knew it, read it, didn’t like it. A few wannabe analysts read and regurgitate some made up interpretation of it and think it’s deep and well written. It’s not, it’s definitely not. Funnily enough though, weirdly the people who pretend to like this series, are usually closeted super perverts. I’ve seen thousands of anime and yes this definitely isn’t the worst thing I’ve seen, but I’d say truly mediocre. Mfs watch an Iyashikei and pretend like they’ve reached some enlightenment. Just don’t say anything negative about whatever is trending in that end of the anime community or they’ll trash talk you over the internet. Look my point is stop faking your taste to seem cool, cultured, or whatever. You may think you don’t fake your taste. You do.
@maxono146521 күн бұрын
So because you don't like it, other people are faking their like of it? Have you considered other people having different preferences than you?
@Air-Bonsai21 күн бұрын
@ no, that’s not what I said. Putting it that way to make me seem like someone who’s mad others like something I don’t is purely disingenuous. Plenty of anime, manga, etc I don’t like whatsoever, that many others truly do like. It’s not so hard to let others have different taste. But in the case of YKK, I do believe that most of its “fans” although they might enjoy a little, they don’t actually care too much about it. It’s more they use it as means to an end. And if you want to fake your taste, I can’t stop you. But it is a little cringe.
@maxono146521 күн бұрын
@Air-Bonsai What makes YKK so different than other shows u don't like? I admit I was generalizing ur statement, but i stand by my point that maybe you just don't get it and thinking other people are faking it is stupid.
@ipadista20 күн бұрын
you are certainly entitled to your opinion, but phrasing it as people having different opinions of a work than you makes them wannabes and (probable) perverts. Does indeed make you sound like your mad at others liking something you dont...
