I'm 32 (born 1990) and the weird feelings some of this brought back...!! I had completely forgotten about anime web turnpike but now I remember going there so much as a kid / teen! I had really open access to the internet growing up, especially for the time, so spent a really long time reading geocities websites etc. I also really miss my LJ era, it was a really great period of time and I feel so disconnected with the internet today and how bland it has all become

I was in my 20s when the internet became a thing, dialup, etc. And then everyone I knew including myself, had a LiveJournal soon after. I was at the LiveJournal con in Hermosa, California, too back in the day. It got wild. Haha.

I think it's just human nature to look at the things you did as a much less knowledgeable, more naive teen and feel embarrassed by it. We want to grow and progress and become better at things than we were, so to be reminded of that phase we all went through where we were kind of dumb and obnoxious is mortifying.

I attended Helen McCarthy's panel at ACen this year, and afterwards I talked to her briefly about how I might research anime fandom history outside of the US. I also interested her in the work of my friend Kevin Derendorf, who does tokusatsu history and cross-influence with anime/manga and non-Japanese media.* If you're ever doing something in either of their wheelhouses, I recommend reaching out to them. *I accidentally got Kevin into doing con panels, leading to his podcast, blog, and eventual book by having him fill in for me momentarily during an anime con panel. Now he does several panels per year at G-Fest and is popular enough that he's more likely to be a special guest on other people's podcasts than produce his own.

TBF DA isn't long for this world, hell i was there for over a decade but as soon as they went in on A/I i nuked my entire profile (long and the short they wanted all deviants to power their A/I Dataset and you had to opt out ONE BY ONE) i know a load of artists who have just moved to having multiple socials and their own websites over using DA and Artstation anymore.

I like the conveniences of today, but sometimes I just feel like wanting things to go back to these times. It's not just nostalgia and wanting to be a kid again, but things on that time weren't so instantaneous and information weren't overflowing - which I suspect is unhealthy - yet we had the same (or even more) fascination for these things we love on these platforms. You know, things changed too fast... when we were living this reality, we had no idea how unique it was and that it wouldn't last more than 10 years or so... I wish I had enjoyed it even more.
