Megumi Ogata's voice is so peculiar. Perfectly fits the voice of a teenager boy, and has that nasal thing going on that, I don't know, it really makes it special to me. And also, the interpretation of the acting is really something iconic. I've only saw Evangelion in original dub so I can't really say about the other voice actors, but Ogata is my Shinji

Casey Mongillo's Subtle and Sensitive Performance is the first one that actually made me like Shinji as a Character, though I do respect the Raw intensity that Megumi Ogata brings to her performances.

For the English dub, I think the Casey dub is better for Shinji than Spike's dub. Casey's voice more closely resembles Megumi's husky adolescent voice.

A tie between Megumi Ogata and Spike Spencer. Ogata has solid in the role since the beginning and while Spencer wasn't great in those early episodes he did improve as time went by and on a couple of occasions I think he did manage to eclipse Ogata. Casey Mongillo has suitably a sounding voice for Shinji and they certainly pull off Shinji's signature screams arguably better than Spencer did. However they put too much emphasis on Shinji's nervous disposition and timidity which effects all the other scenes where the characters' expressing other emotions. As a result their performance comes across as too one-note.
