This week I’m comparing the Blade of the Immortal manga editions that have released with English translation so far, the singles, the Blade of the Immortal omnibuses, and the Blade of the Immortal Deluxe Editions, to find out which one’s the best for you! I’ll give you guys a quick look at the comic issues in this video also!

Great comparison between the different editions. I was already planning on getting the deluxes but you definitely made my mind up. The only thing I don't like is the left to right reading. I have the Hellsing Deluxes and they're formatted in the normal right to left style. It's a small gripe though and one I can look over. They do look great.

I'm so glad there are people like you who appreciate BOTI beyond the appearances and speak out how good it is. Blade of the Immortal is my top 1 manga (Punpun and Berserk are 2nd). This one is overlooked because people think it's just another violent seinen, but few know how rich the characters and dialogue writing is in this - decentralized large cast like HxH or LoTGH. People say it's "Dark Vagabond" but I'd rather say it's "action packed Monster".

Another con with the comic book singles is that they never finished the story. Shortly after issue 131 or so, they switched exclusively to the tankobon format. So you can't even get a complete story in comic singles. Also, great video! I learned a lot! I personally own all the comic singles, the tankobon from when it went exclusively to that format til the end, and the deluxe editions. The omnis are nice, but as someone who has collected manga for 20 years, glue bindings wear out (especially with that much stress on them). That's why I personally love the deluxe editions so much.

I mean all the different types to collect this particular manga seem really good ( I have the first omnibus of blade of the immortal I just finished it about a week ago I purchased it like 3 weeks ago prior because I've heard so much good things about it and so far I'm very much impressed with the story I got to order the next omnibus because I'm that type where I just like to read like three volumes at once so I don't have to stop and see where the story goes because I'm hoping for no spoilers but it is truly an amazing piece of work with the three volumes I've read in that omnibus) I'm probably going to get the different formats just to have it in my collection.

Ah, it makes me happy when I see one of these videos in my feed. This was another banger, you've done an excellent job as always! I really need to sit down and just read this manga, it's one of those things I've been putting on the side for a while since I'm sure I'll enjoy it, I'm saving it for later basically, for whenever I'll be craving a good dark samurai seinen read. xD It's pretty disappointing to see that Dark Horse never bothered to release a proper unflipped version of the manga, which is kinda lazy, they could have at least done it for the deluxe editions. Yes, I get that a lot of work went into doing the whole "cut and paste" method, but after decades passed by, they really should have just released an unedited version simply for the fans and out of respect for the original source material. (Kodansha did it for Akira, so DH could have done the same for BOTI). So yes, I full on agree with everything you said about this topic. What deluxe editions I'd like to see? I'd love to see Trigun + Maximum. Planetes also seems like a somewhat easier thing to release since it's shorter.

​@@jackmaks Yes, but that was decades ago (1997) and the English market has thankfully moved on from flipping manga releases. He requested it back then, since he didn't have any better options and he wanted the intent of the work to still be somewhat preserved, he did not have much of a choice to be honest. DH could have given people a proper unflipped release, but they chose not to, which is very unfortunate.

Whenever you are in the mood for a dark samurai story, Blade of the Immortal is the perfect thing to reach for! The story and the art are incredible, but man the characters. The characters are written so well. I was surprised to see that they didn't do the original reading format for the Deluxe Editions too. That little message I put in the video where it said Hiroaki Samura requested the cut and paste method was also present in the comic book issues that first released a long time ago. They planned to do the mirroring, but he requested the cut and paste method, which I couldn't be happier he did as it would have messed with and changed some of the details. I really wish they would have done the original reading format as well. Planetes would be awesome! It would definitely be an easy one to do given it's length. And oh man, me too! I'd love to see Trigun (one of my most wished for!).

Ηere in Greece there are 10 small books like Omnibus ( I got them yesterday for 90 euros almost). Of course there are also the deluxe books but more expensive.

Fascinating! It looks good in the deluxe edition, but I didn't enjoy the story that much. The first omnibus I read I found pretty boring. Is there a certain book where the story/artwork picks up?

Hey! I enjoyed the story from the start, but it really hooked me in Deluxe Edition 2. Probably going to be different for everyone, but it's one that kind of slow builds at first and then it picks up the pace once the characters are introduced and you get through the setup. It only gets better and better as you keep reading too!

I only have the first deluxe edition, I’ll get the rest soon hopefully, I’ve got so much Manga to buy that I’ve been prioritising other Manga first. But the deluxe editions are so nice, like all the others, the only thing I don’t like is how it reads left to right, I would have preferred the normal right to left.

Oh man, there are a lot of them but some of my favorite high quality editions are aside from the Deluxe Editions, the Highschool of the Dead Full Color Editions (hardcover, beautiful print quality), the Akira hardcovers that come in the 35th Anniversary Box Set, the Vinland Saga volumes, while just standard editions are hardcover and are well-made, the Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin hardcovers, the Soul Eater Perfect Editions, the Saiyuki Resurrected Editions, Fullmetal Editions, Blame and Knights of Sidonia Master Editions (paperback, but larger format, beautiful design and still high quality). I'm also keeping an eye out on the Parasyte Full Color Collection and the No Longer Human Complete Edition that are coming out this year! Hope that helps!

Well to your highlighted emphasis I must admit there’s no manga set omnibus or otherwise that comes close to the supreme aesthetics of this Omnibus editions . They command serious attention and influence to the point where if I was a content creator I would NOT have them in the background no one would pay attention and like me they’d be unable to stop the black hole scale gravitational attractive force that pulls them near and never let’s go 😂

The omnibus vols are taller than the singles by quite a bit. There was another channel that I saw discuss this. I have about half of the singles so I will stick with them, but I would recommend the omnibus vols over the singles for people new to the series.

Not only are the spines of the deluxe editions different to Berserk & Hellsing, but each deluxe has a different type of faux leather from each other, they all look and feel different.

Shame there isn't a retranslation. I just started reading and the 90's-American-comics translation significantly damages the experience. They all seem reverse printed too. This is one of the seminal series in manga, I hope Dark Horse don't have the rights forever.

Hey, thank you so much!!! Oh man, this is a hard one for me to answer because both are in my top 10 (Vagabond is my #2 of all-time though if that says anything). I absolutely love both and prefer them for different reasons. Each have amazing characters, both the MC's and supporting characters are developed well. I would say Vagabond is more a philosophical take; It has really detailed, intricate art that I love (Some of the best artwork I've ever seen). Blade of the Immortal's art style is more sketchy and gritty which I appreciate also and it's supernatural, so it's unique, and the story is incredible too. I think I just talked in circles haha I love them both for different reasons so it's hard for me to compare the two!

I haven’t read either yet, I only have the first deluxe edition of Blade of the Immortal, then I’m missing 4 volumes of Vagabond. The art in Vagabond looks better, but I’m a big fan of more supernatural stories so Blade of the Immortal appeals to me more, at least for now before reading them.

Haven't read Vinland yet but I've just preordered the Deluxe edition that will be out in November (Vol 1) - you can preorder the Vols 1-2. That said, Vinland Saga is widely praised and placed as part of the Big Three of Seinen Manga (for adult audience): Berserk, Vagabond and Vinland Saga.

@@fishactivation5087 He didnt quite redraw the entire series, but he helped in mirroring it, so that it would make a bit more sense. It still isn't as great as the original. Luckily the german version has a very beautiful and cheaper release which is in original format

I need Dark Horse deluxe treatment of some shonen manga. I know they only do seinen, but hopefully they get licenses to shonen-borderline-seinen ones like Attack on Titan and Death Note. Those titles really need hardcovers. VIZ Media is such a cheap company with questionable production taste.

This is hard. I love the look of the omnibus books but the deluxe is such a good quality, not to mention having the least amount of cropping. And let's be honest, so art just demands a larger format.

Only way I'd buy this is if: -Deluxe Hardcover -Right to Left - no mirrored or rearranged art. -JP SFX left in. Subtitle it like Berserk / Hellsing or glossary it in the back. They need to start doing this as an industry standard. Stop erasing / redrawing art just to fit in English SFX. -Don't crop the pages - her terrified stare and crying eyes were missing from that panel. How do you justify cutting out that much detail? -Put the Manji symbol on the cover and spine, cowards - just like Berserk & Hellsing used their relevant symbols. Those mini Omnibus covers look terrible in the center of the hardcovers. Of the 3 so far, this was their laziest Deluxe series. They're all kinda lazy, although with Berserk you can tell they're using the same print format as with the paperbacks, they have the same exact errors. Words not in bubbles or typos. They'll do anything to cut corners. They don't even bother going back and fixing these things in revision for later prints. Overall there's a lot less wrong with Berserk & Hellsing, but this Deluxe BOTI series is just continuing the 90s page flipping jank that no one likes. I hope they get around to Lone Wolf & Cub and with the respect it deserves, not just an upscale reprint in a hardcover shell. Give us those original JP SFX. Do better Dark Horse.
