I think, the title 5 Centimeters per Second comes from the speed at which cherry blossoms petals fall, petals being a metaphorical representation of humans, reminiscent of the slowness of life and how people often start together but slowly drift into their separate ways. Here in this following story we can see that we don't value the things until it is there but rather we pay attention and value when it is gone far away. Also I think the writer makoto shinkai who is a very experienced and skilled writer intentionally made it sad because it shows that in life there will be problems but we should move on and continue our life until we die. Over hear Takaki represents the life of every individual especially our youth and the other people appearing in the anime are the personifications of the emotions that are hidden undiscovered in our delicate mortal heart. The writer intentionally gives a sad ending because he gives us a message that we should confess these feelings and emotions before it's too late to do so. Thank you for reading this comment.

This movie really tells us to become Taki, not Takaki. Taki didn't hesitated to show his love to Mitsuha, even in the ending scene of your name he turns back and calls her. On the other hand Takaki always hesitated to send the messages. It was clear that Akari still loved her according to her last e-mail. But Takaki didn't replied which got her thinking that he doesn't love her. Then she moved on. In the last scene of 5 centimetres per second, Akari doesn't wait because she believes he doesn't love her anymore and she had moved on already. Takaki understands it and also decides to move on. He would still have the regret, but at last he would be happy with his new life too.

WARNING MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD I had summarised this movie,this is for those who are not getting the ending. 1.Akari still loves Tohno but she has moved in her life and married a guy. 2.Sumida Kanae the scooter girl tried to tell Tohno that she loves him but don't have the dareness to say so she failed but still loves Tohno from her inside. 3.Tohno who doesn't know Sumida loves him,he tries to forgot Akari and gets a job but failed and he quits his job. 4.That office girl also loves Tohno but Tohno is not interested in her. Bonus points: * 26:05 - That scene means that Toono is always dreaming that he is with a girl on different planet but he is unable to see her face but somehow he feels like he know her (He is referring to Akari cause he had had never seen her face after they had grown),you can see that in 39:02 too. *45:00 - The scene where Sumida wants to tells Toono that she loves him,but after the rocket launch she realises that Toono never looked at her,he always thinks of someone who is far away from him just like the universe is for humans. 59:13 - They both crossed each other and knew each other but they never saw each other cause you can see their faces are blank just like the toono's dream. There are lot of hidden details and meaning in the movie that many people can relate to But the most important is that it's not necessary that the person we love will love us in return and nothing is permanent in life.
