At this point. Piccolo and his crew were just legit "demons" in the world of Dragon Ball. All the Namek and Goku being an alien too was added later.

It still makes sense in the large scheme of things. Kame going up and Piccolo going down to claim their respective kingdom. Strong aliens that seized the world in some way.

I love the reference in DBZA with Nail and Piccolo. Nail- "I was speaking Namekian. Don't you know anything about your people? " Piccolo- "Well, we're demons aren't we? " Nail- "Nope. Slug men" Piccolo- "Aww, damn it. I liked it better when I was a demon!" Also, take a good look at King Piccolo. He's similar in size to Guru, but not obese. To him, the Namekian dragon balls would be about the size of the earth dragon balls are to Goku, so they would be smaller than he expected. Toriyama didn't have Z planned yet, but there are alot of details that transitioned pretty well between the shows.

AniMelon, I know I'm late but Tambourine saying "I've never seen anyone bald act so brave." is very meaningful here since Tambourine was seen in the previous episode during the flashback of Master Roshi during the war, with all of the men being bald. Meaning Krillin had more guts than all of the martial artists from back then

Most of the confusion comes from the dub because the dub calls God Kami. In Japanese the word means god. In Dragon Ball the supernatural and science fiction have always been mixed. They're namekians that are members of the demon Clan. If the good half of Piccolo is God then his evil other half is the devil.

Tambourine (as well as Piccolo at this point) is a Demon. After Namekians were made up though Tambourine, as well as the rest of his kind, could be considered Half-Namekians. "I don't know if Toriyama realized that or not" At this point Namek wasn't even a thought. I'm pretty sure Piccolo Daimao himself doesn't even know what the Dragon Balls are prior to Pilaf and his gang telling him about them.
