Sheet music → mymusic.st/ani...
This piano arrangement of 「Avid」 is directly inspired by episode 22 of the anime series. It has probably one of the most beautiful cinematography I have ever seen in a TV anime and the emotional rollercoaster was simply overwhelming. The final two episodes of Eighty Six was delayed for three months but in exchange we got a cinema-level of anime production - absolutely worth it.
The official name for the OST used in ep 22 is called 「Voices of the Chord」and it’s basically an orchestral version of the ED song 「Avid」. My piano arrangement is based on the full size of 「Avid」but I adopted a slow tempo based on the orchestra version and have modified the flow of the music a little bit to make it more cinematic, including a key change in 4:08. I also used many orchestration methods in this piano arrangements to fully capture the beauty of episode 22.
① New pedaling technique
Fitting to the lyrics of 「Avid」("it calls, it calls"), I let the piano "resonate" its sound a bit more than usual by mostly using half pedal during the performance and releasing the sustain pedal very slowly for longer notes. This creates a very interesting "mixed harmonic", which slowly clears up by itself until only a very few notes remain. It can be heard in 1:47, 4:04, and 5:02.
② "Emptiness" in the music
Since the main character Shinei has earned the title of "grim reaper" during his long duty on the battlefield, I cannot possibly imagine the amount of loneliness he is feeling, especially if he is being left behind again. The second verse in 1:49 reflects the emptiness of Shinei's mind and the melody is split up into tiny fragments, never reaching its full melody.
③ The "miracle" in the flower field
[ep. 22 spoilers]
In one of the final scenes of the anime, Shinei has accepted his fate and the music in 3:38 suddenly drops to a bare minimum, slowly diminishing until almost nothing is left in 4:01. Then, the key change in 4:08 happens: This is the moment where Major Milize steps into the battlefield and Shinei's destiny is changed forever. The landscape suddenly changes from a blue sea of Insects into a beautiful red flowerbed.
The miracle must be dramatically celebrated at the climax. The left hand is hitting the lower bass notes for the first time to achieve an enormous orchestral sound while the right hand is playing a secondary melody (consisting of thirds and fourths) to represent the red spider lilies dancing in the wind. This is the moment I was waiting for in the anime. This is the moment why I live for Anime and Anime music. And this is why anime is simply the best art.
[/ep. 22 spoilers]
Alright, thank you for reading this week’s "Animenz explains!" It has been a really, really long time since I was that moved by an anime episode and I hope I can experience more moments like this again in the future. A moment where "everything just feels right".
Thank you for watching my piano arrangement and see you in the next video again!

Another anime in the record books, with the novels being just as good. It has been quite a while since a series had conveyed that much emotional impact, resonance and purity in just a span of a few episodes. The Grim reaper has finally reunited with his Bloodstain Queen, while Bloody Reina has finally seen face to face her Prince Charming. The catharsis of their reunion is beyond words, with the soundtracks, facial expressions being perfect. You can really tell Animenz was feeling the music with this piece and thanks for covering it! Well done to A1 pictures, Toshimasa Ishii, and all the other voice actors for procuring another masterpiece. To be expected of the studio that made us cry in your lie in april and anohana. Hopefully there will be at least an announcement of season 2 and release of volume 10 soon. Definitely will be listening to this and LilaS over and over again. The capital L representing Lena and S representing Shin. Two people from completely different backgrounds yet are also so perfect for one another.

"The Grim reaper has finally reunited with his Bloodstain queen, while Bloody Reina has finally seen face to face her Prince Charming" Excellent choice of word play and use of epithets for the both of them. Really helped refreshed my mind on how both names had royal status befitting them, while also having the dark backstory associated with one another. Really is therapeutic that they are finally with one another and hopefully live happily ever after.

Maybe the episode itself will be in the record books but I don't think the show itself was anything special in any aspects other than concept. Though it might become super popular down the line for having a great ending like how code Geass managed to do it (*cough cough* even tho the ending was the most predictable and mediocre shit ever)

Amazing cover! I totally agree that ep 22 was just beautiful. I personally believe it is the most cinematically original and creative episode of anime i've ever seen (and that's saying a lot, considering i've watched over 600 anime in my lifetime) Fyi, the song in the episode during the emotional climax isn't an orchestral version of Avid, but an OST called Voices of the Chord. Technically speaking, i guess it is an orchestral Avid with english vocals, but Sawano had it in the OST from the beginning. Voices of the Chord was first heard in the recap episode of 86 part 1 (at the very end, where Lena heads to the dorm and discovers the messages left behind with the picture.) I personally prefer Voices of the Chord much more, as it's more orchestral and has a deeper sound to it. Edit: for those wondering why i'm suddently talking about this 'orchestral avid', go read the description. Animenz only knew the song as such, so i'm just trying to let him know the title of the soundtrack he tried to cover. Edit 2: Animenz changed the description now, so you don't have to pay attention to this comment anymore haha Edit 3: Just wanted to share a fun fact to people: Did you know that Lena's nickname "Bloody Regina" is just her first name (Vladilena) but with an extra syllable? If you pronounce her name the Japanese way, it goes: Bla-di-re-na. Bloody Regina the Japanese pronunciation is: Bla-di Re-gi-na. I was mindblown when i first realized this hahahaha

"Bloody Regina" is actually a translation/localization quirk. You can hear in the Japanese dub that she's actually called "Bloody Reina" which is much closer to "Vladilena". Why did they change from Reina to Regina? Who knows. There's very little difference between the two words: reina is Spanish for "queen" while regina is Latin for "queen" although according to Oxford it is also a legit English (UK) word to refer to the reigning queen that it is used specifically in lawsuit titles for some reason. I really don't get why they bothered translating it. My guess is that the localization team didn't like that "Reina" was Spanish 🤷‍♂️ By the way, the word "reign" itself is also derived from the same roots as regina/reina.
@MysticCat21
@MysticCat21 2 жыл бұрын
@@w3yr I actually think you got that wrong, cuz i just went and checked Episode 16 (Part 2 ep 5), and around the 21:02 mark, Lena does audibly say "Bla-di Re-GI-na" I don't know where you got the Reina info from, but it seems that Regina is actually the official Japanese word they use Edit: so yeah, the english localisation team had nothing against Spanish. They just went with the word the japanese original uses xD Edit 2: Idk if you got confused, but Lena's full name is Vladilena Milize. But after the events of Part 1, she got herself a nickname like the 86 soldiers (for example 'Undertaker' or 'Laughing Fox') and called herself "Bloody Regina", which is a pun with her real first name but with an extra syllable

I agree that everything just fit together in episode 22, and I think your arrangement did the same. Everything just perfectly fits together. The structure, the holding back of the choruses to let the innovative key change absolutely shine through the piece in the same way that Lena shined right through shin's descent into madness in his moment of despair. This is going to be one of those arrangements that stays as one of my favorites for a very long time. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Animenz, I want to be real with you. There are a few anipiano videos that brought me to tears. The first one was back in 2015, when I was watching your Key Piano medley while reading the comments and in particular, a story about one mother having lost her first child from birth accidents and having her newest baby inside her listen to your medley. The second was a sad Naruto piano medley a youtuber (Majd piano) did in tribute for his friend, who died drowning while trying to save his son. Third, your Heavens Feel medley and a tribute to your grandfather. We've talked about it at length. And with this, I cry yet again but for a different reason. Not out of sadness this time but so much that you've brought to life the motif exploration so exquisitely that for someone like me who hasn't even seen the anime yet, but heard of it and know of its symbolisms and premises (and I'm addicted to the song), I've already shed tears just imagining how masterful the craft of the anime is as well as how you majestically you brought each attention to detail to life. This single piano video is the best example of a rollercoaster representation on how a song captures an anime for me. Thanks for being the best, for 9 years of my life and running.

This is easily the most impressive adaptation of a Sawano Hiroyuki song I've ever seen, the amount of detail that went into each part and all the changes you made were absolutely perfect

Oh my goodness, you've done it again. This arrangement made me feel everything I felt in episode 22 and in the series as a whole: chills, sadness, and an appreciation for the precious, tainted beauty of 86. This song brought tears to my eyes, thank you so much for arranging it. Can't wait for the sheet music to become available!

The best scene from Eighty Six beautifully composed into this masterpiece. I can't help but feel the shivers on the "miracle on the flower field" piece. Great job 👌

What a master piece and you just lifted to next level. When listening to your performance, the memories of 86 just running through my mind. No doubt that 86 is the best anime in recent. Avid and Voices of the Chord only played in the climaxes of 86. Whenever it rings, I know emotional scenes are coming (tissue always prepared)

I watched Eighty Six after listening to this piece because I was wondering what's up, and I must say, HOLY CRAP is it so good! I now understand why this arrangement is directly inspired by episode 22. I am excited (and scared because it's probably going to make me cry) to learn this piece, but I have to finish learning your Kaibutsu arrangement first. It feels like working for my candy lol.
