no. mridang is made of clay and is predominantly used in north east India. mridangam on the other hand is made of jack fruit wood and is play mainly in south India. But the very early mridangam were made of clay but wood eventually replaced it. the etymology of the word mridang or mridangam is mrid=mud and ang or angam=body.

With all due This is the second duet I have seen Pandit Anindo get smashed by Mrudangam. IMO, there are a lot more sounds produced by the Mrudangam and Carnatic Music itself accomadates more talas and hence the vibrant patterns that you can get out of the permutation and combinations
@shuvamghosh815 жыл бұрын
Nobody is smashing anybody here. These two greats are creating music not duelling! It is petty people like you with limited understanding of their art who are smashing the peace this music offers. Duds for whom we have absolutely no use whatsoever.

Deepak, I think for this particular video, I think you might be confusing the age and the merit gap resulting due to the difference between the age of the two players with what other points you have said. I have heard that South Indian Classical Music is rhythmically more intricate than North Indian Classical Music. A more senior musician than Anindo Chatterjee accompanying Dr. Trichy would have maybe convinced you of other views. I too hear a gap between the performances of both these artists. Dr. Trichy's command over the Mridangam and in general over Rhythm is better than Pandit Anindo Chatterjee's command over Tabla. But I think that's mainly due to age. A senior musician of North Indian Classical Music would have been better for this performance. And your argument that more talas leads to more permutation and combinations seems reverse to me. A percussionist's ability to calculate leads to permutations and combinations on the compositions of the talas. We define a Tala. So its intricacy is left upto our imagination. Also, age, dedication, training these are contributing factors. I am sure not everyone can produce such calculated beats as Dr. Trichy without them being spoon fed.

Is the Mridanga and Mridangam the same instrument?
@MotoVikz6 жыл бұрын
Both are same.

it was enjoyable when the two great artists were playing solo; it becomes jumbled and cacophonous when they play their instruments simultaneously; not the players' fault...i guess the percussion characteristics of the two instruments do not lend themselves to be combined; sometimes the attempts to marry different styles don't pan out and i get this feeling often whenever i hear "fusion" music...though it is becoming trendy these days to do so;
@TejasM146 жыл бұрын
It is not the problem of fusion, but the manner of it. When you play together, you need to do exactly that. Play together! Indian classical music follows the tradition of the soloist. Teams are very rare. Temperaments don't match. Egos are high. Worse yet, there is little to no planning before any show. While I am all for spontaneity, it takes team work to keep a team afloat. I bet these masters just got onto to the stage and started playing. Fusion music can work if there is understanding and appreciation of each other's personality. Shakti being a stellar example, where John Mclaughlin drew everyone's genius in. The pinnacle of musical teamwork is the western classical orchestral tradition, where every single thing is thought out to the point. Indian music simply doesn't follow that method. Which is why melodic and percussive spontaneity work well. But if you have two competing styles of precision, you might get cacophony.

@@sooryag1936 it is futile to engage in a duel of words with the uninitiated. It is a bigger mistake to enter into an argument with opinionated non-experts. It is dangerous even. It is ok to express your opinion but it is sacrilege to compare apples with oranges. You probably don't have a clear perception of what this tabla maestro epitomises. You are rating his genius! Probably this has got something to do about the north south divide. However your mindless comments will not compel me in any way to undermine the great talent of the mridangam wizard. I am an ardent worshipper of all great musicians. And unlike petty people I don't compare. God save our fraternity from the biased and prejudiced who are doing great disservice to classical forms.
