As an American drummer, I can say this guy is the best Tabla drummer I have ever seen. His tone, accuracy, and rudiments with his fingers is absolutely insane. Even trying to play this on western drum kits with sticks and double bass drums or kicks will be alot of hard work to achieve what this master percussionist achieves. Absolute respect to this man. His rhythm and timing is other worldly. I feel all of it. Any other percussionist and drummer will definitely feel it.

This is my 15th Comments here. 29 to 33 min is just inexplicable. I have heard cassettes of Ustad Habubuddin Khan and Great Thirkwa Khan Saheb. Keeping all of them ahead in the history of Tabla, I think this is most high class and classical Tabla Solo played. Uploaded in U-tube History . I have once heard Zakirs solo Ahmedabad Jan 97. He is just flawless. Clarty, Quality, Speed, Improvisation and Variation, Direct Disciple of Goddess Swaraswati

At 27:30 minutes Usted Zakir Hussain begins to tune his daya tabla (right hand tabla) with a small hammer. His tuning is part of the performance and is in anticipation of the next three minutes of tabla mayhem. Imagine western musicians tuning their instruments in the middle of a solo performance and making it a part of the composition.

this is my 30th comment may be. Alla Rakha used to chant Tabla boles taking little Zakir in his arms, now those are coming out in golden words or sound. Having played Tabla for 22 years I would say this is The Best demonstration from Zakir and Must be in University Archival for next generations. I would suggest all of you must see the Speaking Hand documentary on Zakir. If I have been inspired on tabla , personal and professional life on commitment, passion , learning and stay humble, he is perfect example. Ma Saraasari has descented in this formation. i have seen him flawless. He has played this for Ustads not for common people. All rella kaida very well articulated with sound quality tonal variation improvisation. I am.lucky he is in our time though two decades senior.

@@tubeboss2180 I didn't say u r not practical and don't have a good viewpoint. I said your viewpoint is narrow and yeah I would choose food packet. But these kinda questions are situation based. If someone achieves excellence in a particular field, these things should be appreciated. For example ustad zakir hussain achieved excellence in tabla. He not only impressed Indians but world wide people. Now see point wise how it affects.. 1. More foreigners are interested in indian classical music, so they come to India to learn it. So there is an indirect investment which can be used for the welfare of poor people in India by government of India. 2. Indian culture is shown to abroad with impeccable beauty. So respect of a country increases. And Bharat ratna means the true jewels who took Bharat on worldwide scale. 3. When a person tries to achieve excellence, he gets popularity and becomes financially stable. Only a financially stable person can do charity and philanthropy. 4. Awards are nothing for these maestros because they are mature enough. It is the fans only who demands. And much more but I don't have to write any more..

I have already commented may be more than 20 times. Not only Zakir has God gifted power, sound quality, improvisation beat and off beat combination. He completely mixes his playing with the instruments. Most importantly variety of instant composition. Zakir was my inspiration in my second phase of Tabla. Apart from his untiring love and hardworking, if you watch his many interviews , he is so humble and being in such height of success, still he always treat himself a learner. He is taught by his father and in his DNA is that always treat yourself as student. Never show off as master that will stop learning and make a person pompous and critic. This is a great leadership attribute that I have learned.

All of Indian Classical music is based on a steady pulse. It is like the canvas on which they improvise and tell a story. Try to listen to the accompanying instrument, in this case the sarangi, and keep the beat on that cycle. Then keeping this beat, listen to what the tabla playing is doing. Will be a little difficult at first but it will open you up to higher levels of appreciation for this art form because you will start to see some of what is happening.
