I think this is just a “grass is always greener” take more than anything. As someone who has seen both the design and the story personality of male Molay I can tell you that he looked quite boring (just your average Templar design) and his personality was basically “angry church knight seeking revenge”.

I don't understand the reason for this character being female. Jacques de Molay was a male, no one has ever claimed that the person was a female, and a skull overlay done on his image showed him to have a male skull.
