Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Not as good as the book, but still worth watching.

Fact about the scene where Sherlock gets rid of his cocaine bottle and syringe: He doesn't kick the habit in the book. This was added in due to Granada finding out that the show was reeling in younger viewers.

What a surprise....at 0:949 right before it cuts off, Sherlock takes a sip out of a "Butterfly tea cup". I have those tea cups!! They are made by Lenox and mine came in a set of 4, with a color half way up from the bottom (which I could not tell since he had it covered with his hand), but mine have, blue, pink, green & yellow just half way up and then the rest is white. The 'Lenox Pattern is "Butterfly Meadow" and I have a few dinner plates each having a different butterfly/flower design on it, one large serving bowl, one large platter and a couple plain white dinner plates embossed with raised plain white small butterflies, which can be used with the others. I also have larger butterfly mugs of the pattern, which could be used for tea or coffee, but they are so pretty and shaped so nice. You can get the plain white embossed larger mug (if you want to call it a mug) to match also. I'm surprised because I started collecting the pieces about 8-10 yrs ago while in North Carolina. I found you can still get a piece or two at TJ Maxx or Marshall's Home Goods store. I just love Sherlock, never get tired of watching any of them. I wondered what year they filmed this?
@peterdavies43066 жыл бұрын
It was broadcast in April 1988, so I would guess it was filmed in 1987. Lovely to hear about your Lenox tea cups - I'm a china collector myself. :)
@lbluebird4866 жыл бұрын
I love pretty teacups, but don't collect very much. It's hard not to though. I believe in using what you buy and hate having to wash collectibles a couple times a year (as a child had to do that, so said I'd never have nic nacs-have very few). What are your favs of what u have though? Do you collect a certain style or, designer or company? I also LOVE old flatware! Doesn't have to be pure silver, as long as it is 'unique'. Today's generation doesn't appreciate the quality and artistic design which went into making china or anything of quality hundreds of years ago. Love to 'browse' antique shops, rarely buy at my age. Just seeing unusual things is such a treat! I went into a local historical house recently which is set up with collectibles from an old local family. To my surprise, had never seen "glove vases" before. Her collection was amazing! I regret I don't remember how far back it went. Will check and let you know, if you like? Very intrigued by old wrought iron gates/door pulls, stairways; cooking utensils and those beautiful old gas lanterns which hung in hallways/walls. They are hard to find though. I have a beautiful ceiling light fixture, no where to use it, so if you have any creative ideas, please share. Pinterest has some nice pics of old pieces sometimes mixed in here and there. My fav old teacup has "pansies" on it. Yet, butterflies are my passion. Have lots of things with butterflies worked into the design in some way. Would love to hear what you collect and enjoy. L :)

It sounds like we have very similar tastes! Like yourself, I use most of the things that I buy. I collect bits of Wedgwood, Royal Doulton, Waterford, as well as Arthur Price flatware (I live in the UK, so those companies are easier to find), and I do use them every day! My favourite piece would probably be a beautiful 19th century tea tray that I picked up from an antiques dealer twenty years ago - it's made of walnut, with an elaborate marquetry inlay, and is so pretty - and it does get used regularly! I had to laugh when you mentioned having an old light fixture with nowhere to put it, because I'm in the exact same situation! I saw a gorgeous stained glass ceiling light years ago, and couldn't resist it. Unfortunately it's far too big for my little living room - it would look a bit silly - but I keep it tucked away, and one day I hope to live somewhere big enough to use it! Antique door handles/door knockers, kitchen utensils are beautiful too, and I'm currently saving to buy a lovely old Vienna clock. I don't have a particular one in mind - I'll just save what I can over the next year or two and wait for a nice one to appear on the market. :)

You are absolutely right, we do! What I would give to talk to you right now and see your items, it would be so exciting. My piddly few are nothing compared to yours, I'm sure. Until my daughter grew up, I was the only one who had an interest in these sorts of things. I would spend a couple hours in the china dept alone, looking and wishing I lived the lifestyle to use them, not to show off, but for the pieces to be appreciated. It would be fun to go browsing with someone like you who knows so much more than I, but still have respect for the designer and what goes into to making it. Take a look at this. I was trying to find an example of your marquetry inlay. only found boxes so far, but do so love the look; then found this: www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/87820261461707752/ Oh my, it's gorgeous! I'm not too into gold, but because it's swans, I LOVE the delicate design. I'm familiar with all the names you mentioned except Arthur Price. I will look it up as well. I just had a cup of hot tea and need another. Just got home, it's freezing outside and can't get warm. Btw, I absolutely LOVE old clocks!! I do not have any, but I find them so detailed and intriguing, if done by the right artist. I look at the old ones and sometimes feel like they hold the secrets of the family...not sure why I feel that. :) Look forward to chatting again. Lana :)

Thank you very much for your kind message! I’m sure you have a wonderful collection! The important thing about a collection, after all, is not how many pieces you have, but how much you love them and how well you care for them. :) It’s really lovely to hear that your daughter shares your interest in these things. There is nothing better than sharing these things with a family member! You should arrange a few shopping trips together. :) I don’t have many things passed down to me by my family, but I wear my grandfather’s old watch, and it means more to me than any other watch in the world because it belonged to him. :) The designs you linked to are beautiful indeed! I’m not a great fan of gold either, but those really are lovely, and the level of artistry is incredible!

@Cloudminty I spoke to a friend and fellow Holmes fan about this depression theory, and she suggested that Holmes may have been bipolar. His sudden mood swings suggest this, so it's a sound theory. And again, he may have been trying to self medicate with cocaine.
@ShawDAMAN15 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%. The Downey film is obviously not faithful even to the spirit of the original stories, and it's sad as you said that they feel that more violence and so called "sex appeal" is the way to "adapt" Holmes to the current generation. Makes me sick
@TheKulu4214 жыл бұрын
I can't help wonder if Holmes suffered for clinical depression, thus making his cocaine use an attempt at self-medication. Look at how Brett portrayed Homes--lack of appetite, mood swings, his inability to withstand inactivity. Back in those days, he would have been on his own when it came to treatment.

To me, Jeremy Brett will always be Sherlock Holmes. I know some people say Basil Rathbone because he was the original or something, but Rathbone's series just didn't get the dynamic between Holmes and Watson right. This series got it spot on and that is why it's my favourite.
@KVrya12 жыл бұрын
hum, at this time and place, it wasn't exactly the best place where kids would play, and anyway, the message anybody could see if that he wants to quit his addiction to cocaine, definitively, and that's not a thing a lot of people would do.

this is what wikepedia said: In the Granada Television version starring Jeremy Brett, a sequence is added showing Holmes burying his cocaine syringe in the sand during a walk on the beach. Apparently Jeremy Brett had become concerned about his character's drug habit, sought and received permission from Conan Doyle's heirs to have Holmes give up the habit.wow

@TheKulu4214 жыл бұрын
@Cloudminty Thank you. Except perhaps for Watson, Holmes would have had little sympathy from his fellow Victorians. Psychology was in its infancy, and the brain's functions were little understood. Even today, sufferers of clinical depression are too often told to get hold of themselves and cheer up. That's like telling a diabetic that he /she can overcome the disease with will power.

This 'modern version' of Holmes has a Sherlock Holmes who dresses up in clothing that looks like it was stolen from London's East End and doesn't bath or shave and can't use a comb, plus he has a habit of stealing Watson's clothing and has a villain who looks more like Sherlock Holmes as far as his profile goes than RDJ does. This may be Guy Ritchie and Warner Brothers version of Sherlock Holmes but it's nothing close to Arthur Conan Doyle's character which is why it gets trashed so much.
@cha515 жыл бұрын
If come December the general feedback is that this SH film is better than all of the trailers I've seen so far, I'll certainly give it a chance, if the basic consensus is that Downey's portrayal of Holmes is right up there with Matt Frewer's and Dudley Moore's except with a bigger CGI budget, I probably won't, fair enough?
@cha514 жыл бұрын
I really don't know why the supernatural plays such a theme in this crazy film, I'm half expecting this villain 'Lord Blackwood?' to be Alister Crowley in disguise or some such silliness.

To his credit here, Brett got permission to change his character Holmes and quit taking cocaine because his series Sherlock Holmes had many young viewers. I know how you feel,BUT!That is the whole point, they made a modern version of the movie!It's intentional for them and the movie to look that way,I mean, it's directed by Guy Ritchie! They are not even making a version of any of the original stories, they made up their own, just took these characters... If you want the REAL Holmes, watch Jeremy Brett - he is truly THE Sherlock Holmes, and the best ever.But please, do not trash this new SH movie, just wait 'till it gets out...I've explained all.
@cha514 жыл бұрын
Well the gay Holmes / Watson bit is fun in that video 'The many moods of Sherlock Holmes' and some funny slash pastiche stories I've read but I'd rather Ritchie tried to stick to at least a few of the basics of the Canon. LOL that Vader/Jabba The Hut as lovers is perfect, Holmes admiring Irene makes sense, her kneeing him in the groin and handcuffing him naked to a bed? c'mon now.

I know they 'should' be more original,and it is disappointing that they didn't make much the spirit,as you say,of Sherlock himself,but I just wouldn't trash this movie so much if I haven't even seen it...As I already said,they are making the DIFFERENT version of it, it's almost similar as you'd say bad things about 'The Young Sherlock Holmes'...I'm just making an example, don't take me wrong,AND,what else I'm saying is that I would wait to SEE the movie,before making any other comments about it.
