Always liked the way Jeremy Brett in a hurry would take off his overcoat and hat and scarf and just let them drop on the floor like an eight year old. Really a nice touch.

My mate Danny's father, Michael Grimes, was the production designer on this episode and others. Danny remembers meeting Jeremy Brett several times and recalls that he was a true gentleman but very unwell.

Guys, Sherlock Holmes in all it's adaptions, is legendary. Do we really need to fight over something as simple as different shows and movies. To each his own. Now sit back and enjoy the episode.

Holmes NEVER smoked opium, he alternated between morphine and cocaine, the latter of which he recommends in a seven per-cent solution. However, in one case, Holmes pretended to be an opium addict, but was actually repulsed by the stuff. One thing that always struck me about him in the stories was he never seemed addicted to the drugs, it was more of a thing he did when he was bored, and when he had a case he wouldn't touch the stuff.

@GaryHMan It's all written up in his biography on Wiki, but he had manic-depression, emphysema and heart problems - his heart was apparently twice its healthy size.

Times certainly have changed in one respect...Holmes's way of disposing of his syringe isn't exactly acceptable now. Anyway, I'm really enjoying - the crimestory, the Victorian setting, etc.-- all very absorbing and wonderful. What I think I'll remember, however, are the characters or more accurately because this is video, not the book -- the portrayals by these actors of the Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson characters and their warm, respectful friendship.

Brett looks old because he had real drug problem. That's why he was so convincing. To play high. Better to be high. You get the real look. Robert Downey jr. is famous for doing roles all messed up. And he is an excellent actor.

Basil Rathbone is probably the actor who looked most like Sidney Pagets illustrations of Holmes. But Brett is jet the best to potrait the detective. The only thing I can remarke on the Granada addaptions is the age of Brett and Hardwicke. Holmes and Watson was around the age of 30:s- 40:s in the books.

Interesting how JB can portray that though Holmes is coming back into his element now he has a case, he is still obviously not quite right mental healthwise - this is shown better than the book. Having said that it may be JB's mental state in reality, in which case it is also sad that this bleeds through.

@Chakotaysmack there was a reason that they wanted Holmes to kick his heroin habit...They found out a lot of children watched this series and they didnt want to show Holmes in that way.

If one is in withdrawl, one is sick, not jumpy. Try again. And trying to not seem to be in withdrawl is futile. He was sick on the way, then he shot up and felt much better. Thats the most obvius take on it.

As a local I know the proper place the brothers woulda gone was Bodmin Moor (where the county lunatic asylum was, along with the prison). Helston, pfft. nuthin there but Flambards. Not the worst accents I've seen though. *cough* Doc Martin. Really love it though.

@Ihatethisugh1 I never once used the word "crazies", I only responded to a person who attacked me in a very threatening and disturbing way because he disagreed with my dislike of the new Sherlock Holmes Film. I am not an arse hole thank you very much. I would like to be able to discuss my like or dislike for a fictional character without being attacked or made to feel guilty just because you have Manic Depression. If you don't like my comments then maybe you should leave.
