Anki: How To Do Anki Faster (and stay focused!)

This video will show you a couple different methods to get through your reviews faster and stay focused
Speed Focus add-on (with pause) *for Anki 2.1: ankiweb.net/sh... (Glutanimate's version now has the pause feature!)
If its not working on nightmode, I renamed my night mode add-on file z1496166067 and this made it so that it started working again on night mode
On 2.0, I believe you can download the add-on off anki web, then just copy the main.py file from my 2.1 version into the add-on file and it should work

To get the sound alert to play, I had to put the alert.mp3 into the "sounds" folder- just a heads up for anyone having similar issues!

Definitely one of my favorite add-ons, thank you! One idea would be to put in a "toggle on/off" option with a keyboard shortcut. I typically turn the add-on on or off depending on what type of cards I am doing (new vs review.)

I am a practicing radiologist 3 years out of residency. I WISH I knew about Anki in medical school. I would have probably been better than just an average student ;) Anki has made my recent study of Japanese and Korean super fun and effective.

Unfortunately when I activate your Add-On the "Auto-Again Mode" is not working anymore. So I just wanted to have the pause feature, but the auto-again was just fine for me you know (I prefer clicking on good manually). The Option for "rate-again" is still available in options but it doesn't work anymore while reviewing (of course the field "auto-good" is on 0). Is there any way to fix this?

UPDATE: Select your options group to default and you will not suffer like me. I have installed the add-on manually and using the google folder, and it simply won't work. I disabled all my other add-ons with no luck. I have the most up to date version (2.1.42). Does anyone know what to do? The only thing that seems to work is if I hit "p" it says pause in the corner, but it never advances or clicks through or anything.

1. Do you have our version? It won't work with the ankiweb version 2. Do you have the nightmode add-on turned on? It seems to have issues with that

@@AnKingMed Yup I updated today to the newest version of Anki & I'm using the (auto good & pause) version. As for nightmode I deleted the addon so it shouldn't be a problem! I spent an embarassing amount of time tryna get it to work but no bueno! & this is the addon I've been waiting for too lol

@@wov3n Sorry to hear that.. I'm using it on my version right now and its working fine. Try getting rid of all other add-ons (just drag them to a folder on your desktop) and then set up the add-on in the options and hit p while reviewing. You should get a tooltip that says "Paused"

@@wov3n My guess is you have an add-on conflict. One way to test that is to drag all your add-ons out to a folder on your desktop so you only have the speed focus add-on installed and then see if it works.

I've got the add-on auto advance feature on the Mac version of Anki cards. It goes to the next card after 3 or 4 seconds. No matter which setting I change, I can't speed it up to change to the next card within 1 or 2 seconds. Is there a setting for the Mac version? The iOS version works perfectly and am able to change it easily.

Pause only seems to work if I go to the Tools menu and click on it. The keyboard shortcut does not work for me. Using Anki 2.1.29 on PC.

If you have downloaded the speed focus review add-on, the settings for each deck will have new options to increase the speed of the timer so you go faster. You might also want to watch "How to Skip a Day" on our channel so you can spread those cards out over a few weeks. 3000 is a lot!

I’m not sure I quite understand what you’re wanting, but the V2 scheduler makes it so you have a hard button even on learning cards

I'm using anki 2.0.52, how do I install this? I downloaded the files from the google drive link, added them into the add-on folder in anki and restarted the app but it doesn't show up under "General"...

I have a 2.0 and it works just fine. Download the addon from ankiwebb and then copy the script of "pause" feature from main.py file from Anking version to your version.

Check your settings on your deck under "General" and see if the box "Automatically play audio" is checked. Check your add-on file and see if the audio clip is in the folder and if it plays on your computer.

@The AnKing Thank you! It was not showing up on my laptop for some reason on your website, but on my desktop it worked! Last question, the alert and show answer time difference needs to be at least 2 seconds for the alert to actually play for me. How did you get it to play with a 1 second difference between the two? If I set it to 5 second alert and 6 second show answer, the alert does not play before the card flips. Thanks!

Yes. At the bottom of the main.py file is code to add the pause function. I'd copy that and install the original speed focus addon and add that code to the original main.py file

Hey! I don't entirely know how to fix this problem. My best guess is that something in the coding of the card is not quite right. One thing you could do is go through the browser and see if you have multiple note types and figure out which ones are giving you trouble and then change them to a similar note type that is working correctly. You could also download our note template and use that instead since I know the coding works on those. If you're confused, send us an email and we'd be glad to attempt to fix this!

The P shortcut for the Pause button isn't working for me. I can still pause but I have to click on the menu option which is cubersome. I copied all the code into the original speedfocus file and uninstalled nightmode but that didn't fix the problem. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hmm... it could be conflicting with one of your other addons and there’s not really a way for me to test that. Try toggling half your addons off and on to see which one could be causing the problems

Yeah I'm having the same issue and toggling the other add-ons (as in temporarily disabling them) doesn't seem to be working. If it helps I downloaded the earlier folder for the add-on (i.e. not the .addon file)

@@loganarnold2294 It's either a nightmode conflict or a conflict with another keyboard shortcut you have set in another add-on. If you're not already, I'd recommend updating to 2.1.20 so that you're on the latest version that has built-in nightmode and then I'd toggle off all your other add-ons and test it

I can add that to my list! I haven’t done much Chinese studying with Anki but I’d recommend searching to see if there’s any good premade decks out there. I found a great medical Chinese one by searching on google. As for settings, I’d recommend the same settings I do for medical students :) (I’m my “Recommended Settings” video)

Ankiweb's addon is intended to and actually does auto hit 'Again' (and there it works for some reason). Would also like to be able to set any of the four rating buttons (Again, hard, good and easy) to be automatically hit in speed focus mode. But how can we accomplish this?

Move the sound file into the sound folder. Here's how to do that: In Anki go to Tools->Add-ons->[select/click on]Speedfocus(auto good and pause), then click view files and you should be able to see the "sounds" folder.

Hey Doc, Thanks for great content as always! My Anki Usage has improved substantially thanks to your channel! How difficult would it to tweak the add-on to accept intervals of tenths of seconds? When reviewing my Mandarin Vocabulary, I have Show answer to 2 sec and Mark 'good" at 2 sec If I can shed half a seconds on each, I can save 5000 seconds on each run - and better yet, improve my speed recognition!

I'm not sure about custom study sessions. We don't use them very often if ever. I'd suggest trying it because I don't see a reason why it wouldn't work.

@@AnKingMed i tried adding the add-on, and it worked perfectly fine. But you cannot add the addon before you start your Anki sesh. After clicking "study now", then click options in the lower right corner, and from there the settings can be adjusted.

06.11.21 There are 2 problems that you may have 1. Alert sounds won’t play open add-on -> Speed focus -> view file -> put the Alert.mp3 to “sounds” folder 2. “P” won’t work It may conflict with some addon. So first open add-on -> Speed focus -> view file -> open main.py -> roll to the end and then you will see mw.form.menuTools.addAction('Pause speed focus mode', pause, ‘P’ I change P to Q, and it works @@ don't know why, haha
