There was a point in the late ‘00’s where music could’ve went in a really awesome direction and we could’ve had all sorts of good pop music. Phantogram, Yeah, yeah, yeahs…. Instead music went the way it did. Taylor Swift and Autotune rappers. Fortunately, we have AC.

Well, if you look at what's popular, music seems to generally be doing worse than it used to. However, if you look under the surface you'll see that today's music is just as excellent as yesterday's: sites like Rateyourmusic can confirm this. Also, there is a bias towards the past since we can filter out bad songs from the past and only mention good artists and songs, however in the present you can't ignore what plays on the radio, in people's cars, in restaurants and so on, you can't ignore current popular music which makes you hear all the shit from the present, while trash music from the past will be forgotten.
