@from my experience, I use mobile 99% time to watch KZbin videos, not computers, PC e. t. c. And yeah you can also get extensions, but then you need to use specific browser and they don't even have all the extensions that PC have so I'd rather use native app

Remember back in 2010 you could literally change the ENTIRE background of your channel lol. I think you could even change the color and background of the subscribe button (as in: design your own subscribe button in photoshop and upload as a picture onto your channel). OH, and there were even achievements you could unlock? Like, having a video reach a certain amount of clicks or being in the Top 20 of your countries channels or something like that. You got I think even little trophies being displayed on your channel? Anyone remember that? I still have no idea why they took that away from us, every single channel was so personalized and unique, now everything looks the same

KZbin is by far my favorite place to spend time online, and seeing the potential for the experience to be THIS efficient makes me wish KZbin would watch this video and take notes! It might be a stretch, but seeing an overhaul of the creator studio would be really interesting! There's so much data in the advanced analytics, but so much interesting data buried/inaccessibly to most creators who don't know what to look for.

The creator studio needs a lot of help. The old version from 8+ years ago was basic, slow, and unnavigable, but at least I found it powerful. The modern one is also horrendously slow whenever they do additions to the main dashboard and haven’t optimised them yet. That might still be personal bitterness from like 4 years ago, though 😅

I can only point out (copy and paste of my main comment) Not being a fan of Google and Microsoft, I switched my OS and browser since end of Win7 to KDE Plasma Neon with Firefox, which allowed me to use all those lovely extensions that comes readily available with Firefox.. Enter Enhancer for KZbin, which comes with a lot of abilities highlighted in this episode..Not mentioning Return YT Dislikes, another extension pointing out this video has only 4 dislikes as opposed to 2.3K likes. Then there's Adblocker Ultimate to remove all those pesky ads souring my viewing experience. Now, as a pensioner living on the bare necessary, and thus using an OLD laptop I spruced up with more RAM and a SSD, I still enjoy an acceptable experience using these mentioned software, and even with Windows 11 23H2 (Installed with the necessary workarounds) works just fine here. As far as smartphones concerned, yes, I use the same tactics there but since I'm also a tech dinosaur, which means I'm OLD as well, I prefer working with bigger screens, as smartphones kills my poor old eyes.. 🙂

It really *could* look like this if anyone at HQ cared, but the modern KZbin UI was probably all just conceived through A/B testing to maximize engagement and watch time over usability. This is why so many features have been removed over the years like 0-5 star ratings, annotations, video categories, direct messages, community captions, and the dislike counter.

KZbin is in "milk it" mode. The only changes we will ever see going forward are ones that maximize immediate profit. That will continue until eventually KZbin just dies and is taken over by a different platform. However, because they have such an entrenched monopoly on monetization for creators, this death will be very slow and very agonizing, for everyone involved (except the shareholders of course).

Not for no reason. Stuff like recommendations in search and hidden dislikes were changed because they work with increasing "engagement" and "watch time". Sure, not for everyone, but for most people. They want to keep you on platform as long as possible to keep you watching ads.

I have done (very early) testing for apps and games myself and the most things I absolutely recommend to change are UIs and controls. People REALLY struggle with those and never think about them, but it makes such a different amount of time. Just thinking about unneccessary clicks/touches and "moving distance" (of the cursor/mouse or finger) or even button placement on phones, when the finger to press it hides the action on the screen because the action happenes at the location where your finger is... there are so many things that only a few people like you and me think and care about, and although I am using KZbin seemingly very different than you do, I absolutely adore the thoughts behind these changes and agree with almost all of them. 8:36 - it's possible that I'm getting old and blind, but I do actually prefer having the profile icons instead of just colours. This also helps ppl with daltonism, since colours pulled from pictures will the whole rainbow, and avatars at least have some shapes in them. I personally am always very confused by Twitch chat, its a chaos - mostly because of the fact there is nothing breaking up the space there, its just a wall of text. Profile icons/avatars is why I prefer to watch streams on YT.

This video is seriously the best YT video I’ve ever seen. Every feature mentioned is exactly what I’ve thought about before. It’s such simple logic-if YT leadership doesn’t get this, they don’t deserve to be there. Everything here is just flawless. Huge props to @juxtopposed! The bit about YT wanting users to stay longer but actually making frustration pile up. Spot on. Companies like Meta, Amazon, Google, or Apple need to think beyond profits at this point. No one’s leaving their platforms-they’ve got a monopoly. YT isn’t going anywhere or facing real competition anytime soon. When you’re at that level, it’s time to prioritize users. But nope, same story-YT leadership sucks. They see the issues, but they just don’t care enough to act. That’s what’s most frustrating.

They aren't going to. Google is not a software development company (like they pretend they are) they're an advertisement company. Why would they let people choose what they're advertised? That'd defeat the whole purpose of advertisement. I'm not against advertisement whatsoever, this 'merica, but I do wish they'd actually let people turn off personalized ads and videos. And I think they should make "not interested" actually remove videos in that category from their history, making it actually functional.

14:20 I really love the collection idea - this is basically the sole reason why, a few months ago, I used the channels feature for creators to split up my account into multiple themed channels like for IT, Science, Society, and so on, and subscribed to creators based on the subchannel's theme. That way not only are the subs categorized but I can "train the algorhythm" to one type of content which I can freely switch between without messing up the suggested videos

Amazing, yet another video that completely blew my mind. The way you approach things so holistically, focusing on function over aesthetics, is honestly incredible. The improvements you’ve suggested could, in so many ways, make a real difference for KZbin. Side note: I cannot stand that we still can’t search for videos within a channel on the mobile version, it’s just insane, is 2025 ffs. Now, all we have to do is convince an entire board of dinosaurs and clueless shareholders, plus 50 stakeholders who barely seem to know the basics of what they’re doing. Then there’s the hierarchy of project leaders and a chain of project managers who seem more concerned with ticking boxes at the end of the sprint than actually solving problems, so they push through a ridiculous backlog of nonsensical tickets on Jira. Oh, and don’t forget the head designers who’ve been stuck milking Google’s system for nearly 20 years. Maybe, just maybe, after all of that, someone will finally glance at these AMAZING changes you’ve made and say, "Oh, cool button, let’s do it." And then it’ll take 10 months to implement, and some dev will still code it wrong, misaligned, with half the motion you originally designed. Welcome to the harsh reality of Product/UX/UI Design.

It was the least personal a recap could get, they alienated many communities by bringing in many content creaters a large portion of people never heard about. This isn't about those content creators, everyone deserves to get on there but it's just that the platform is too big to celebrate it as one community. It's a much better option IMO to celebrate it based on what you watched and what categories/communities your viewer behavior falls into.

Great points! Two sticking points I see are: 1) searching chat is a huge resource intensive deal. Great idea, but not practical. 2) I love that mini-player and queue up new videos with it all the time. Yes, sometimes it's too sticky but I prefer it a bit too sticky over closing too easily while in the middle of watching a video and just casually adding another to the list. (but if your complaint is more about the mobile version - I'm on your side. That one needs some love.)

I have not finished the video, but I am commenting anyway because in under 10 minutes you have already touched on major issues I have with the "newer" youtube. Using Watch Later as I am scrolling through content, but having to work hard to get the video into said playlist. Not being able to easily swipe a video closed on mobile, or accidentally seeing a spoiler comment when I am scrolling through recommended videos. The date at the bottom of a video for some reason being ambiguous instead of just listing the date. Watching one video and suddenly it is recommended to me until the end of time (the home page recommendations have gone horribly downhill since 2018). I love your video so far, excellent work!

10:55 One key change that's still missing is for channels to be able to define multiple custom "feeds" that you can opt into/out of separately. Right now, creators with multiple types of content have to make multiple channels to avoid killing engagement when viewers of one type of content don't watch another. But that's terrible for discoverability, so many still don't, and then users get their subscriptions flooded with videos they don't want to watch unless they unsubscribe from the entire channel. Since channel feeds would replace multiple channels, I think it makes sense to give each feed its own channel-like page and turn the main channel page into a central hub for all of the feeds.

The "tv mode" is something I've been wanting for years on youtube. I wish streaming services would do it as well, can you imagine how nice it would be if disney plus or netflex had curated "channels" or "stations" that you could play and it would essentially choose random episodes from shows you like and make line ups for you, or combine similar shows and movies etc. I know audio play is a thing on both youtube and streaming platforms, but I don't want random movie marathons on disney plus, and I don't want random recommended videos on youtube. Imagine if you could make a "channel" out of your subscription collection feature. That would be amazing, and it's another way youtube could introduce ads in a more "accepted" and "tolerable" way (same applies to streaming services).
