Today we look at the queen of the Silver Age, Anna Akhmatova. She lived one hell of an interesting life and documented it all through some of the greatest poetry to come out of the twentieth century. And yes, I pronounced her name wrong!
Enjoy!

As a native speaker of Russian and ardent admirer of Anna Akhmatova I must say this video essay is just awesome. Thanks for introducing this outside of the Russian speaking world seriously underrated poet to a larger audience!

"the ancient gods changed men to things, but left them a consciousness that smoldered endlessly, that splendid sorrows might endure forever. and you are changed into a memory." 🥲🥲 from one of my favorite poems by her. i am planning to get this tattooed on me.

I really liked the video! Congratulations on the content! The first time I met her was through a poem translated into French called "love" I was very emotional and went after her works. I believe that Russian authors are some of the best in the world. They can mix the playful world with the sorrows of life in a very touching way. They represent all movements well. They always carry a melancholy full of meaning. I believe that only through literature could we be extremely educated academically speaking. I started studying Russian to be able to read, because I found out that Russian works are translated from English into my language, which impoverishes the text a lot. And it's a very beautiful language. Thank you for sharing this!

That is a life well lived. Anna was unbowed , undeterred. We all should follow her footsteps and resilience. Merci. 🙏☮️

Thank you for that great video. I discovered her poetry via an album by Iris Dement called The Trackless Woods which set her poems to music.

There have been great things to discover about this wonderful female poet in watching ALL the videos about her on KZbin. And this one has plenty of fine content to offer as well. The pronunciation of her name, however, with an emphasis on the third syllable (differing from all the others emphasizing the second) sort of took the polish off the end product.

Amazing woman and an amazing video. I knew none of her life before watching this and you made a clear breakdown of it, so thank you! Can you recommend biographies or books written about her life? I'm guessing she didn't write any kind of memoirs.

considering the amount of time this valuable video undoubtedly required, why not spend a minute longer to insure the accent is on the second syllable when pronouncing the poet's name.

I didn't like it ! As I fully enjoyed it ! And 'enjoying' as in 'being moved beyond despair', as in 'being touched in the wintering light when the moon could speak to the owl at last'. Thank you wholeheartedly. From Flanders' fields.
