I think we should all face the facts we already KNOW ::: Opera singers have the greatest voices in the world & have for centuries. They have given extreme vocal pleasure -- almost ecstatic -- to the public & this electrifying music. It's really amazing what their vocal cords can do whether or not they should do it. BUT no matter what the cords can do :: Anna Netrebko, like Podles & Borodina, can't go back to beautiful lyricism once they cross to The Dark Side into The Tales of The Crypt.

This is painful, despite appearing in the costume Nilsson wore. If her goal was to sing everything regardless if well done then she is succeeding. The tenor singing Calaf sounded like an aged tenor who should be singing the Emperor but it also was poorly done. Sounds like someone was squeezing his nuts! A very sad state of vocal affairs at the Met. It’s just not lack of singers of skill and reputation but nobody’s from around the world who seem like amateurs. Netrebko is the new Domingo. It’s only a matter of time and she will be singing baritone roles after moving from soprano to tenor!! YIKES!!

Domingo was never a great Calaf in my opinion. It's a role that demands a lot of high notes, and Domingo sounded very audibly stetched by them in many parts of the opera. Otherwise, he was great of course, but this is a role that really requires a tenor with very good high notes. As for Caballé, she was also essentially a lyric soprano with some spinto qualities (but not fully spinto). Her Turandot worked pretty great, but it's not like she's exactly the opposite of Netrebko singing Turandot.

What a bunch of haters! If this singer's name was Stemme or DiDonato you'd all probably love her! LOL. Netrebko sings neither "flat" nor wobbles as do most of the others singing this music nowadays . FYI - Turner, Nilsson, Deutekom are dead. As much as I admire their historical performances, sadly this planet continues to turn. Yes, they & Eva Marton, Ghena Dimitrova, & Gwyneth Jones shall live on as great interpreters of this role as long as there are devices available to recreate those performances. Netrebko & Eyvazov are certainly up to the challenges set before them. IMHO - they succeed.

Definitely not DiDonato. (I appreciate her determination and tenacity, but she is not a good singer, either.) Stemme is "eh." This is just not good singing. Netrebko is not a dramatic voice. She would do far better if she sang the lighter roles, instead of pushing to try to be spinto or dramatic. I feel for her. She needs some "no" people in her life. Sing the things you can and leave the rest. IMHO.

Is this from the performance in Munich in Bavarian State Opera or from the New Year's Gala in MetOpera? I think from the Met. Also, Anna Netrebko is the best Turandot nowadays. She is La Splendida. And stop hating. You are not specialists but full of jealousy. My piano teacher said me that she is the best soprano of 21st century. And you can check that Raina Kabaivanshka agrees and read what New York Times say about her Turandot. Personally, i'm looking forward to her Aida, Abigaile, Salome, next Turandot, Elsa and Isolde. Of course, the old school singers are incredible and fantastic too,we have to pay tribute to them but they have died. We can listen to them but the operatic life continues.

I have a theory about the lighter voices being able to more navigate difficult music because their voice sits above most of the musics in a way. Think Callas (naturally high voice), Pavarotti (leggiero tenor whose natural territory was all the high roles), Sutherland (another high soprano). They dont necessarily sing the roles the right way ,but they CAN do them.

Per cantare Turandot, tra le altre cose, ci vuole una voce potente capace di oltrepassare la barriera di suono di orchestra e coro in fortissimo. E in quei passaggi non mi pare che la signora Netrebko sia in grado di sostenere abbastanza un canto di forza al pari di Callas, Cigna, Dimitrova, Nilsson o Turner. Sulle altre sue lacune in questo ruolo non voglio esprimermi. Dico solo che volendo cantare un po' di tutto senza un'adeguata preparazione tecnica ha rovinato precocemente il suo strumento vocale. Ma non è mica l'unica, ormai purtroppo è quasi la norma in campo lirico..

Netrebko has a pretty big voice, what it is not is a true dramatic soprano voice, which is not just a matter of vocal size. That said, many sopranos who were certainly not big-voiced dramatic sopranos dig sing this part successfully (though not exactly as the reference performers for all times), like Caballé.
