Hearing Sutherland sing this difficult role makes one realize only she could sing it this effortlessly, and with such intensity and varied colors, but all within the strict Mozartian style. Purists would object to her habit of scooping in slow passages, and her vibrato,but for me this is golden age singing. Indeed she could have possibly tackled Strauss’ fearsome Elektra, had she taken the risk (we know she wanted to preserve her vocal health above all).

I have a cd of the premiere of Tippet's Midsummer Marriage with her in the same year. When Tippet was writing the opera the Covent Garden management told him she had been cast and he should go ahead and write as much difficult coloratura as he wanted!
