I work in the food industry in the UK, generally the rules for declaring ingredients are pretty similar but the American philosophy for food ingredients is more along the lines of "you can use it until someone proves it isnt safe", whereas in the UK it is more like "you cant use it until someone has proved it is safe"

In the US it is very important that the product looks 'appetizing' which means adding fake & unhealthy food colouring (caramel color). Some US additives are well known in the branch of giving an extra hungry-feeling in your stomach such as extra sugars (high-fructose corn syrup). And for taste they use in the US all kinds of processed (hydrogenetic) oils, what means that the potato which is mentioned in the fries can be potato powder + fillers = calciumchloride (= chemical powder not food!). How do I know that? 1. In the Netherlands there is a regular check of all kinds of foods. 2.I am a chemical engineer 3. I like to cook and I check what ingredients are in the food.

This could be one of the reasons Americans say British food is bland just from looking at it. We prefer to let the taste speak for instance rather than artificially making everything look over the top.

They probably won't see this but. This is why you guy's thought there was a rule that breaks down stuff more. Not to mention things like colour, which you guys noticed in the fries.

The reason ice cream machines in McDonalds is a problem is due to McDonalds having a sole contract with one ice cream machine manufacturer (Taylor company, formally the Taylor freezer Corporation). If the machine is not cleaned in one specific way it stops operating requireing an engineer from the machine manufacturer to attend the resturaunt to put in a reset code. It should be noted that there is a very large call-out fee for the engineer and McDonalds and their franchise holders are obliged by contract to only use the machine manufacturers engineers to service and reset them. Therefore as many of the resturants are independent franchise holders under the McDonalds brand the ice cream machines are not in service due to the cost of the engineers being called out !

The beef flavour is because McDonalds use to fry their fries in Beef Tallow, but following an unfounded scary against animal fats, switched to vegetable oils. This does have the benefit that now the fries are vegetarian. I lived in Bristol in the UK and there was a takeout that did a crispy creme burger - a beef patty, 2 slices of cheese between 2 glazed ring donuts. Also UK food labelling laws are very strict any of 14 allergens have to be clearly declared and with Natasha's Law all ingredients must be listed. In McDonalds if a customer asks about the ingredients you must hand them the folder containing all ingredients for each product and let them read it themselves, you are NOT allowed to read it to them in case you miss an item. Additionally the beef used in McDonalds products in the UK is all UK and Irish sourced which prohibits the use of growth hormone in the breeding of the cattle, a practice which is common in beef cattle used for American McDonalds (and the reason your mother told you it would advance your development - wise woman). There have been many demonstrations in the UK about McDonalds contributing to Amazon Deforestation for Beef farming but this again was a mainly US thing. Basically the UK McD's sources beef and eggs from UK and Ireland, wheat products from the EU and UK and Chicken from Thailand as a rough guide.

@@marydavis5234 the reason we pronounce it like we do is because in the 18th century there was a shift in how the vowels in British English were pronounced, so basically British English evolved. It's like with the supermarket(grocery store) Aldi, Americans pronounce it All-de and we pronounce it Al-De, our pronunciation is closer to the native German pronunciation of the store, Americans seem to elongate the vowels in some words, Yoghurt is another example of this, there's an emphasis on lengthening the O in American English, whereas in British English It's shorter and quicker.

If there's any doubt about the affects of a chemical in food then it's just banned in Europe whereas in the US it's the reverse, where it's allowed to be added until adverse affects are proven. In New Zealand my first McDonald's burger in 1976 I ordered my favorite burger, a cheese burger. What I got was a little meat patty and a slice of cheese between two tiny buns. I literally thought they screwed up my order and gave me a kids appetizer or something. After I realised that that's what a McDonald's cheeseburger was, a piece of crap with no filling, I was friggin' disgusted and I didn't go back to a McDonald's for 33 years when they brought out the Angus burgers in 2009. So for 33 years I'd drive past any McDonald's to get to any other burger shop. Ya gotta have a filling in your burger people! A beef patty, tomato, lettuce, sauces, onions, cheese, sometimes beetroot, in a full size bun, that's what a cheese burger in NZ is.

The reason why ingredients lists are so long and have repetition is because they have ingredients of the ingredients. So if you had a sandwich it might have mayonnaise as an ingredient, then have everything they used to make the mayo like eggs, oil, salt, pepper etc in brackets after it. This helps people with food allergies because they might not know what mayonnaise is made of or they might use a certain type of oil that has allergens in it. In the UK the common allergens like wheat, nuts, soy and milk are written in bold so they're easier to spot in the ingredients list.

For everyone from the UK saying that due to laws not allowing certain additives as to why their ingredients lists are shorter: That is not fully the case, in the US companies are required by law to list sub-ingredients, on the list of ingredients for the mac sauce things like salt and vinegar are listed twice, because it is used in both the main part of the sauce and it is an ingredient of the pickles, whereas in the UK you just list Gherkin and not the full ingredient list for them. Then on the US side, when it says spices and spice extractives, it then lists those spices.

You may list things like spices instead of the individual spices however you are required by law to list any potential allergens. The healthy options are probably more expensive because they don't contain artificial ingredients which are aimed at slowing the rate at which products spoil. Due to the lack of preservatives, they have a shorter shelf life so have to be tossed out if not consumed within a certain time frame (especially salad which can't be frozen). This means that the business loses money and therefore, to make up for the loss, they jack up the price.

One of the biggest differences between US and UK for ingredients is the stricter regulations on additives that tend to be found in the UK (and most of europe). Another thing you'll be shocked to know is the whole "injecting the meat" thing americans believe is "kinda" true. Most US livestock tend to be given steroids and stuff to help bulk them up (even though a lot of that bulk is water weight caused by the steroids) so when cutting up meat they make more portions. This is a reason that a lot of US meats are banned/restricted in the EU.
