If there’s ONE thing that would’ve saved my many beginner struggles, it would be to be taught from the very beginning that watercoloring doesn’t boil down to two states, wet & dry, but three, and damp being one where so so so much of the magic happens. Beautiful tutorial!

I am 70 years old and just a beginner. I have been scrolling KZbin and IG for instruction. I just found your channel and absolutely loved this technique and more finished look. 💜I am drooling over your beautiful work. It may be a little trickier for a beginner but I am determined to achieve this “wet on damp” technique. Thank you for sharing your beautiful work and instruction.

59 here, same boat! Check out “The Mind Of Watercolor,” “Liron Yankowsky,’” and Joe Cartwright, amongst the zillions of amazing watercolorists on KZbin..also the oil painter Michael James Smith, and Janhendrik Dolsma…OH..also landscape watercolorist Oliver Pyle, he talks about washes in terms of three opportunities..the first wet wash, next wet on damp (using more concentrated pigment than what’s on the paper) then the wet over (once) dry details….

This was so helpful. I have been painting for a while but my technique is always a struggle. I lose my background colors and have way too much "unnatural" looking lines. Your input re: damp painting and time to dry and brushes and loading paint...all sounds so basic but its exactly what I needed. Excited to practice! Thank you Anna :)
@fernandocoye4416 Жыл бұрын
I have used this wet on damp technique with pitt markers as well. Not much water is needed otherwise the ink gets diluted. Also, if you went with hard lines already, then wet the area again. The water will do some work to soften those lines as it evaporates. Depending on paper, you may need to gently scrub the area. Sometimes, just rewetting softens up the area just enough.

Just a side note..the “blue” orchids at the grocery store are actually white! If you look, there is a little green floral tape on each bloom stalk, that hides an injection site of blue dye. The orchids will bloom white on future blooms..
@AnnaBucciarelli Жыл бұрын
Woah I didn’t know this!!!! John are you saying there are no “true” blue orchids in nature?… and also 🤔 does this mean one can theoretically produce blue peonies??!!! Asking for a friend (peonies are my favourite 💙)
@johncspine2787 Жыл бұрын
@@AnnaBucciarelli orchid blossoms are quite long lived and sturdy, that’s why they survive the injection process. Peony blossoms are super delicate..I grow both..I imagine lavender-ish peonies aren’t far off. On the positive side, the white orchids they use to inject are super hardy, I’ve had one blooming for years on my windowsill..I think there’s one or two “close” blue orchids but they are rare..the super fake looking ones though are in abundance at the grocery store, lol..
@johncspine2787 Жыл бұрын
@@AnnaBucciarelli there’s a company called Repotme and they sell Quantum Orchid, it’s like a fulvic/humic acid probiotic type thing for orchids, it’s a fantastic product along with their fertilizer, if you have any orchids..

Amazing fact John, I also did not know that. A bit disappointing and will definitely check this out, do you know at what point this injection happens, before leaving the grower?.
@johncspine2787 Жыл бұрын
@@consueloyoung4484 I don’t know the specifics, but I’m sure you can Google it. I would imagine they inject them after the blooms have formed large buds, but, I don’t know. I always warn ppl in the store when I see they’ve bought one. There’s nothing wrong with it as far as I’m concerned, but, after realizing it the colors do look really unnatural. The white variety they usually use is very Hardy, and a good repeat bloomer, at least the one I have. When in doubt, check for a circle of floral tape around the stem, so far I haven’t seen any without it.
