I think it’s partially because she analyzes and ponders moves when playing rather than relying mostly on intuition. So, she’s able to explain things efficiently and clearly.

As one battle-hardened veteran of the amateur chess circuit told me once, chess is the "slaughter-bench of the ego." It's so true. Looking up opponent's games in chess databases to get a sense of their playing style, esp. their favorite openings; then making sure you're familiar with those lines. The other kind of prep happens before super GM games where they try to find a line that's likely to surprise their opponent.

I participated only ones and as a teen but for me I looked at the games of my opponents in advance to understand their gameplay and habits, practiced openings and solved puzzles. It was very helpful. They probably memorise a lot of gambits/previous games etc

ANNA! Stay with the standard openings. Stop with taking so much time trying to calculate opening variations. Get the opening moves completed quickly and get into the middle game. Love your reviews. Very informative.

Exactly what I thought! I have to think early, since I lack opening theory. I am almost jealous about people knowing all this lines. When Anna knows several good lines I always think "just pick one, it can even be a random good line you positively know, but don't waste a second in this phase of the game".

I watched the recaps, and the thing I would say is that the tournament was strong. NOt only at the top but in the middle sections too the players were very serious. Well, it's easy for me to say because I don't take chess too seriously - leastways not any more - and I guess maybe you do still. I hope you got a chance to do a little sightseeing, and have a few decent meals. Sometimes while travelling it's worth the extra few 'dollars' to get a good meal and not whatever they're serving in the local diner. Good luck, and hope to see more games soon.
