I visited Eritrea for a few days in 2005 as leader of a diplomatic delegation. It was a surprisingly delightful experience. Asmara is serene and peaceful city. Excellent weather, simple and welcoming people. Always wanted to visit again.

The junk stockpiles you stood over and glanced and wouldn't be able to take photos of containers reminded me of Mengistu's brutal dictatorship that led the two countries into hell of unjust suffering. Eritrea has suffered much both in Mengistu's regime and his successors in such was that they have been excommunicated from international cooperations and bilateral benefits. You singled out and tell me one truth about cleanliness; I dare say to you that cleanliness is their Trademark.

As an American soldier that was stationed there in 1972 and 1973 I can understand what you are saying. In the beginning of your video you showed the big church. I was married in that church on October 28 1973. I remember when that old Fiat building was open for business. There were no junk yards around Asmara at that time and I would imagine the US could be responsible for some of that junk. When you were there did you ever hear about the old US Military base which is also way up on a hill. I would love to see that but I would imagine it would also be one of those places they would not let you see. Things on the local market did cost more and things on post for the Americans were very cheap. I remember paying less than 30 cents for a gallon of gas and 10 cents for a can of Pepsi with a pull tab. We used to string them together and hang them around our rooms. Dang we were stupid. We had reel to reel players and 8 tracks that allowed us to hear Led Zeppelin playing Stairway to Heaven which had just been released in 1971 I believe. We spent many nights on the beach in Massawa and that big round hotel on the water that's called the Dahlak was called the TTU and was run by the Military for the Military. I only wish you could of seen Eritrea or as we called it than Ethiopia in the good days when Hallie Selassie was still His Majesty and by the way I saw him 2 times on post. I was part of the Military Police Security team when he visited. He seemed to be a great man and never would of let his country become what it is today. The greed of a few can take away so much from so many. Thank you for sharing this with an old man and if you have anymore video you would like to share about your visit I would love to see it.

Thanks for the video, tourism has nothing to do with politics. Economy is hard to work on Eritrea, the country has never been free but had been oppressed for so long during our arm struggle. Colonialism, War and many oppressive criteria are the few factors that the people of Eritrea faces many obstacles today. This is slowly changing.
