😱 The world's longest road tunnel is in Norway
At an astonishing 15 miles (24.5 km) long, the Lærdal Tunnel is the world’s longest. Costing 1 billion Norwegian kroner to build (that's about USD $110 million) the tunnel connects the small communities of Lærdal and Aurland.
Its design is admired all around the world, as it incorporates features to help manage the mental strain on drivers. Every 6km there is a cave to separate sections of road. The lighting varies throughout the tunnel and caves to break routine and provide a varied view.
😱 Norway has a land border with Russia
This one had me scratching my head and checking a map when I first moved to Norway. Although there is just one road crossing, the Norway-Russia land border is 120 miles long.
The Storskog crossing on the E105 highway is the northernmost road border crossing in Europe. In September 2017, a new tunnel and bridge opened on the Norway side of the border, decreasing travel time for those crossing the border.
😱 Kirkenes is farther east than all of Finland
At only 9 miles (15 km) from the Russian border, Kirkenes is one of Norway's most interesting places from a social perspective. As it's so close to the border, there is a big Russian influence.
😱 Norway is home to Hell
A little over one thousand Norwegians can say they live in Hell. The small village is within walking distance of Trondheim's international airport and even has its own train station.
Take a short walk from the station via a signed forest trial and you'll find some crude rock carvings of reindeer, believed to be around 5,000 years old.
😱 Modern and ancient skiing were invented in Norway
Sondre Norheim is said to be the father of modern skiing. In the late 19th-century, he began using stiff ski bindings so he could swing and jump with less risk of falling. His new ski design - the Telemark ski - led to the modern skis we know and love.
😱 Norway rocks the Winter Olympics
Following the 2018 games in South Korea, Norway's total medal haul stood at 368, including 132 golds, from the 23 competitions. Their closest rivals in the table are the United States (305/105) and Germany (238/92).
😱 Norway has a volcano!
Norway's only active volcano is on the island of Jan Mayen in the Norwegian Sea.
It's about half-way between Norway and Greenland, north of Iceland, and is considered together with Svalbard for administrative purposes by the Government.
😱 Norway gave the world the cheese slicer
The cheese slicer was invented way back in 1925 by Thor Bjørklund and has become a staple of all Scandinavian kitchens, and many others around the world.
😱 Norway isn't powered by oil
While the Norwegian government says Norway will be carbon neutral by 2030, that only takes into account domestic emissions, and not the much larger amount embedded in its oil and gas exports.
😱 No-one knows how long Norway's coastline is!
Stretching all the way from the Oslofjord down to the sunny south, in and out of the many western fjords and then stretching out for many, miles northward before bending around the top of the Scandinavian peninsular to meet with Russia, only one thing's for sure: It's very long!
😱 Norway isn't called Norway!
In fact, the full name of the country is actually the Kingdom of Norway. In Norwegian, this is written as Kongeriket Norge, or Kongeriket Noreg in nynorsk.

Yes, Norwegians sailed and landed in and around Canada and the northern United States, at approximately 1000A.D., about 500 years before Christopher Columbus was even born. The Norwegians were fantastic sailors, for previously 1000's of years. Norwegians and Scandinavians were circumnavigating the globe long long before others in the world.

We don't actually know where the name comes from. One theory is it means the way north, but there are two others. One is that it means the narrow lands or the way across narrow fjords. A third one, perhaps most fascinating, is it means the way to Nor; the forgotten first king of Norway, who is supposed to have united Norway hundreds of years before King Olav the Holy.

People living at Kirkenes can apply for a Borderpass that enable them to move more freely between Norway anf Russia. Same goes for the russian side. Some of my family use to travel to nikkel to shop... I live too far from Kirkenes to have such borderpass tough.

"Hell" comes from the old Norse word "hellir", which means something like rock cave or cave under an overhang. It also means "luck" in Norwegian. Hell in Norwegian is "Helvete", but in old Norse mythology Hel, the daughter of Loki and Angerboda, rules over the dead in Hel or Helheim.

I to visit Kirkenes, do it in the end of July, where festival time and you will experience warmer climate, midnight sun, lotsa people and cultural events. If winter time, then mid March to end of april, to experience winter activity, the famous ice hotel, king crab, and mountain winter outdoor activities.

Was traveling from Aurland to Lærdal. Took the Aurlandsfjellet National Tourist Route, the snow road, and Anna is correct, it is a must see road. It took twice as long as it should have because all the scenic lookouts to stop at. Then took the Lærdal Tunnel back to Aurland but construction in 2 areas so traffic was slow the whole way, didn't get a chance to stop at the rest areas but looked really cool.

In the North our relationship with Russia is really important we've shared a "border" for around a thousand years yet we're the only country Russia borders who they haven't invaded. We also had a shared trade language during the Pomortrade called "russenorsk" which is a mixture of the 2 languages this had lead to some Russian words remaining in Northern dialects like "kartanka" or "krale" Also the Russian city of Murmansk was called "Romanov-na-Murman" before the October revolution where "Murman" was the Russian interpretation of "Nordmann" (Norwegian) and the Barents Sea was called "Murmanskoje morje" or "nordmannshavet" (Norwegian sea) So our countries (at least the northern parts) share a deep connection that have lasted for millennias

My dad was born in Kirkenes. Cool videos. He told me that when he still lived in Norway (he emigrated to Canada in his 20's) that there was a law there where you could camp on any public or private land as long as you cleaned up your camp and only stayed for so long. Is that still the case? He left Norway in the early 60's, so maybe it has changed. Just curious :)

Private land, yes, but not on someones lawn, or in a field that is being used. And not right outside someones house/windows. While camping you can also gather firewood, from the ground, but not cut anything down. You may also pick berries and mushrooms for personal use. That would mean a few buckets of berries, not just an handful:)

Norway did not only invent the cheese slicer, other things that are more world-wide used that is a Norwegian invention is the aerosol/spray can that is widely used today for almost everything from hair spray to paint cans. Norway also invented the modern day fertilizer that is used world-wide to grow plants and vegetables in factories and farms all over the world. So the cheese slicer is hardly the most world-wide Norwegian invention. x)

Hell means Luck in Norwegian. I understand why people find the name funny. A funny fact about the olympic medals. I do not remember which year it was, but this one year one of the tv channels that was showing the olympics had 3 transparent pipes which was meanth for each type of medal (gold, silver and bronze). For each medal won by us they would put a ball in the pipe belonging to that type of medal. The pipes were cut in the lenght they though were so long that we would never be able to fill up, but the pipe for gold medals had to be changed out with one that was much longer because we filled it in a couple of days. Everyone was shocked, even us norwegians. We had more gold medals alone than what most countries got in total. Before anyone says it's stupid, skiing is for us what american fotball is for USA. We take great pride in it

Did you know that the Lenin statue closest to the North Pole lies in Norway? It lies in Pyramiden, a Russian ghost town in Svalbard. I suggest that you should visit this one and Barentsburg, a genuine Russian community in Norway. I was there last July. You should go there to make a video.

The train station in Hell was funnier before. I see that now they have changed the word "gods" (norwegian) to "goods"(english), but before it used to say "Hell, Gods Expedition". Otherwise, good job.. I think some norwegians may have learned somthing new too :)

The coastline length depends on cartographic generalization, or in layman's terms the resolution of detail used for measure. The higher resolution, the longer it gets, especially if it's very jagged. The principle is very easy to demonstrate. Take a large jagged object like a rock and use a string to measure it's circumference by holding it tight. Now try again, but make sure you include all the nooks and crannies.
