Anne Bonny: History's Most Infamous Female Pirate

Blackbeard, Henry Every, William Kidd, Bartholomew Roberts…They were some of the most infamous pirates in history and they all had one thing in common - we’ve covered them all on Biographics. Okay, they had two things in common - they were also all men. There is no doubt that piracy was a man’s game, but exceptions did exist. In China, Ching Shih became one of the most successful pirates in history, and even here in local waters, we have Anne Bonny who gave up an easy life as the daughter of a rich plantation owner to follow her true calling, raise the black flag and sail the seven seas.

@@Biographics It is. Ultimately the German Army killed them all, but after the initial retreat, and they'd taken the whole country. One Polish military advisor to train them, 43 mailmen who had various weapons and one machine gun. The whole of the initial German Army contingent.

In 2020, a statue of Bonny and Read was unveiled at Exection Dock in Wapping, London. It was originally planned for the statues to be permanently placed on Burgh Island in south Devon, but these plans were withdrawn after complaints of glamorizing priracy, and because Bonny and Read have no association with the island. The statues were eventually accepted by Lewes F.C.

I thought I was familiar with Anne Bonny’s story. I remember her and Mary Reed being the only two sober/willing to fight when they were boarded, and that they had been boarded after a night of raucous drinking so there really wasn’t much in the way of cannons and fighting. Am I thinking of a different pirate? That, and something about Calico Jack being married and wanting out of the pirate life but she brought him back in?
