Anne of Green Gables is a story about a girl named Anne, who is adopted by Matthew Cuthbert and his sister Marilla. Despite initial objections from Marilla, they decide to keep Anne, as she needs love and care. Anne's best friend Diana becomes good friends with them, but Mrs. Rachel Lynde, a friend of the Cuthberts, is skeptical about their care.
Anne starts her school year with her best friend Diana, but she is not interested in boys and gets into trouble when Gilbert Blythe starts school. Anne is punished for her imagination, and she refuses to return to school. Marilla seeks advice from Rachel Lynde and is assured that Anne will eventually want to return to school.
Anne faces more trouble when she accidentally puts medicine in a cake, which leads to misunderstandings and unexpected invitations. She also experiences an experiment with a hair-changing product, which turns her hair green and causes it to grow back as dark red curls. Later, Anne gets stuck in a sinking boat, and Gilbert rescues her and apologizes for calling her "carrots."
Anne is excited to study for exams at Queen's College and become a teacher. Marilla and Matthew promise financial support for her studies. Over the next two years, Anne works hard to prepare for the examinations and forms deep bonds with those around her. She is elated to learn she placed first in the examinations and was awarded the Avery prize.
Anne returns home and notices something is wrong with Matthew, who is suffering from heart trouble. A letter about the Church Bank causes Matthew to collapse and die. Everyone in Avonlea is saddened by Matthew's passing, but Anne struggles to grieve until she recalls his reaction to her Avery prize. As Marilla's health declines, Anne decides to stay home and work as a teacher to support them. In the end, Anne and Gilbert make amends and decide to be friends, bringing happiness to their future.
