'Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire' star Sam Reid chats with Brief Take about playing "train wreck" Lestat de Lioncourt, his admiration for Bailey Bass ("Claudia")'s performance (especially in those last scenes of the season one finale), how he knew "Rashid" was "Armand" after reading the script for episode two, his experience acting with Jacob Anderson ("Louis de Pointe du Lac"), behind-the-scenes of Lestat's throat cutting in the seventh episode, and what he hopes to see in season two of 'Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire' on AMC.

@@gilsurf8 No exactly, dare I say there will never be another Lestat like his (and I’ve always been a huge fan of Tom Cruise’s Lestat) Sam embodies him in such a way that it literally feels as if the character has leaped off the page. He IS Lestat. So we need to see as much of his story that can possibly be filmed. I can’t even imagine what we as a fandom will do when we get Sam as Rockstar Lestat.

@@shadowseer07 I felt the same way while watching the scene where Louis meets Lestat for the first time. His performance had me spellbound, not only due to his attractiveness, but because of the way he nailed Lestat’s mannerisms and vivacious personality. There was a hint of Lestat the young man, the dreamer. Sam’s performance, especially in that scene, gives me goosebumps. He’s so spot on it’s spooky!

Despite Lestat's socio pathology, Sam Reid's performance makes Lestat all the more endearing, in my eyes. He does all the wrong things for all the right reasons. At bottom, Lestat is genuinely in love with Louis. Fans of the show react to the physical abuse perpetrated by Lestat. Yet totally overlook Louis' years of verbal and emotional abusive behavior. Both are guilty of mishandling the relationship.

@@Elaiyel Yes! This. 100%. I watched the first series twice and I really felt that yes, Lestat is an attention seeker and he can be very selfish but, he gave Jacob Claudia even though he knew it wasn't right and he didn't want to. He wanted to keep Louis happy. And it's not his fault that Claudia does what she does (killing Charlie etc) but he gets the blame because he did what Louis wanted and made her a vampire. Lestat just embraces himself fully - he enjoys being a vampire and accepts that he is a "monster" and he can't understand why the others can't do the same. He was being neglected and ignored by Louis all the time. So yeah, I don't see Lestat as a bad guy overall. Edit: Also, in the fight scene in episode 5, you can hear Lestat say "let's stop this fighting. I'm really trying to restrain myself" and then they come crashing through the wall again so it almost seems that Louis started it again maybe?

This series drew me in from the very first episode!. So much so, that I just re-watched the movie, as my initial viewing was so long ago. I must say the performances, mood & structure of that story was world's apart from the series! My first impression of the film had been, it was just OK (as Tom was miscast). That impression remains the same. As Tom had 'played' Lestat as a flat out psycho-vamp. In contrast, Sam Reid actually 'became' our Lestat. He successfully delivered a multi- layered & downright heartfelt performance, as was warranted. Where in Brad Pitt appeared to sleep-walk as Louie. Jacob Anderson retained a sincere vulnerability throughout the series. The only performance that actually remained exceptional as per both adaptions was that of Claudia. KUDO's to each of the actresses! I loved this series so much, I have re-watched many episodes!. Also, in anticipation of the second season. l'm picking up the next 4 books from the public library (never read them). Much like the masses... I just cannot wait!!

I hope we don't have to wait for the 3rd season for Lestat's backstory to be told. I think they could alternate episodes from his backstory with Louis and Claudia's experiences in Europe. What happens to them there derives from a lot of Lestat's backstory. Sam Reid is too valuable an actor to use sparingly in the 2nd season.

People's reactions to that "domestic abuse" episode really had me scratching my head. They were using terminology that is usually used for real life humans and judging these vampires as if they were judging real life human beings. They forget that these are murderous monsters that on occasion show human qualities. People are ok with them murdering people, but god forbid they assault their partner. Yeah, the explanation doesn’t match up. Louis was tortured 9 years before the finale. The catalyst was Claudia being taken from the train and kept prisoner. It’s just icky storytelling wise, like when tv shows would use rape to be about the perpetrators redemption arc. Also, it’s explicitly stated in the show that Louis actually spared Lestat, even knowing he was dooming Claudia, gave him a little neck slice and sent him to his coffin to recuperate. It was a loving act, not 1/100th as brutal in the way it was filmed as his own near death experience. Lestats face was untouched, he was hugged and not dragged, his emotions during it were pride at Claudia and acceptance/love for Louis. He was an admitted participant and allowed it to happen, where Louis didnt have that choice and only felt terror. So I also don’t buy that Louis needed that extreme level of DV to be done to him to that point of being able to murder, because he never even did. He saved his life.

At first glance of this show I hated that they'd remake something so well done in 1994.... then I kept watching. Sam's portrayal of Lestat is epic and much closer to the Lestat in book 2 of the chronicles. Happy he integrated some of the back story, the accent is accurate, the temper, the physicality of an aristocrat AND a skilled wolf killer, etc. It's more accurate for me. I also was, at first, upset about Louis being a pimp yet supposedly being the humane one.... yet Brad Pitt/the book's Louis owned slaves. So they're both hypocrites I suppose and it actually does translate once you realize that. Great job, Sam!

I don’t think the death scene was deep enough. It was much better in the movie. You really thought Lestat is dead. Here … you knew he’s not. But it was a great episode apart from that. I was like this throughout the whole season, some of the scenes I loved some was better in the book or film. It’s just my opinion. I use to be obsessed with the movie, I wanted to be obsessed with this too. I’m enjoying it but not that blown away. The changes bug me.

they cant go strictly off the book or movie because it would be impossible for it to be a multi season show. plus if they did that you would already know exactly whats going to happen everytime a major event happens. i love how at times its with the book and movie and at times its it own original material.

I am amazed that in a country that is full of violence, from sports to movies to music to TV to real life mass shootings, people freaked out over episode 5. How did GOT or American Horror Show stay so popular for so long? How do Marvel movies make billions ? This is quite confusing. Personally, I don't watch or participate in things that offend my sensibilities. Then I don't have to worry. But that is just me, I can be very differentiated. As Dr. Honda says, "we all deserve therapy ".

I think it was less to do with violence and more to do with how out of character it was. He was manipulative and toxic but never an abuser. Even Sam was shocked when he read the script but then he said he sees the vision his character will take and has complete faith in Rolin. And that was the point many many fans just turned 180 on Lestat and felt no sympathy for when he died even tho the book makes you feel sad. Now the unreliable narrator trope comes into picture with Louis' distorted memories, so what actually went down that night. But after watching multiple interviews i do think that 'fight' actually did happen and they added it for shock value to like completely villainize lestat. Sam did mention that his redemption arc is on the way so fingers crossed. In very curious to see how unreliable Louis is and what role Armand plays in this

@@memoryisamonster I love a good read, thank you. I am aware of what you are saying. We know Lestat never physically hurt Louis. It's just a statement of curiosity to all the " clutching of the pearls ", I have been reading. That's all, just questions. Which I was always told , if you don't know....ask. So, there it is, I said it. I think we should question everything we saw this season. Armand does have the power to control others thoughts. And because we know what he has done, without that why would Louis be around him? So, we look forward to season 2. Have a blessed day.🌹🌷🌹

@@memoryisamonster just throwing in my two cents here for fun. I haven't read the books, so I can only really speak to the show's characterization of Lestat, but to me it wasn't surprising when the manipulation and emotional abuse turned physical. It was the compounding of a lot of different variables in both the story and their relationship and I personally think it made sense. It's obviously not healthy or good, but both the characters are deeply flawed and traumatized individuals, and sometimes traumatized people are triggered and end up inflicting some part of their trauma on others, even people they love. Hurt people hurt people. I in no way think that's an excuse for what Lestat did, but I absolutely think it tracks with what we've been told about his past and his trauma, as well as the anger and abandonment issues he's been shown to have. And (since this is fiction and not real life) I don't see it as a point of no return for either him or his and Louis' relationship, nor do I think most people do. (At least not based on what I've seen in the fan spaces where I spend my time.) Lestat may be a bastard and I hated him at times and wanted Louis and Claudia to get their revenge on him, but I also wept when he "died". When he was on his knees and simply told Louis "I'm glad it was you" I sobbed. I think the show does a really good job at showing Lestat and all his flaws, and making the viewer love him despite (or even because of) them. Not to mention that Louis actually shares a lot of those flaws. He beats the shit out of Lestat in ep 6 when they have messy make-up sex. We see Louis stab him, and in the very scene he's covered in dried blood and bruises. Louis pins Claudia to the wall by the neck when she tries to burn Lestat, just like Lestat did to her when she tried to take Louis away from him in ep 5. I'm not saying Louis is as bad as Lestat, but neither of them are good people, and I think that's ok. For me personally that just makes for a more compelling story. But then again, I am also a Hannibal fan, which probably speaks volumes about my tastes when it comes to fucked up people in love lmao

@@jordanparker657 "We know Lestat never physically hurt Louis." - That's not true. Lestat slapped Louis directly after turning him. It's been a while since I read the book but people said that there were other occasions too. Anne's vampires are often violent towards each other, sometimes out of love, sometimes out of anger or frustration. Their emotions are all over the place 24/7, so even a tiny thing can turn into a huge fight. In the real world it's a huge problem when people act like this but these are fictional monsters. In the end violence doesn't mean anything when you heal within just a couple of minutes or hours and you live forever.

Reid's character as Vampire Lestat, isn't as deeply romantic as Cruz, nor is Louie, but it could be because they're multi-sexual. The CWTV Series relays a more powerfully sinister and horrific feeling--- its scary as hell which keeps audiences watching! No doubt Sam Reid has face of an angel, but wait, wasn't Lucifer God's most beautiful angel, originator of poetry (helped King David with Psalms), songs, music, literature, art of all kinds, plays, actors☆☆ Well everything belonging to Creativity until Archangel Michael threw Lucifer was out of heaven becoming Satan with God's approval. Hey, that's a blockbuster movie in an of itself--- STEVIE, WHERE ARE YOU, OLE' COLUMBIA GRADUATE??(Spielberg) ❤️Linda

Reid's points about the domestic abuse were interesting. The fandom went nuts over a guy who ripped off a man's jaw and getting beat up by his boyfriend. It's kind of madness when you think of it. LOL.
