Anne Schwanewilm is a splendid and underrated artist.

I had the good fortune to hear her at the Met in two of the 2013 performances. In typical current Met admin style, she was never asked to come back. She returned to NYC for a fabulous recital. After that, I’ve followed her every move and saw her in Europe a few times, and have all her recordings. She knows perfectly what to sing for her voice unlike most modern singers. Her Berg is stunning, as is her Schrecker, and Krenek, Poulenc, Messiaen, Mahler, and lieder etc. I agree with your commentor who notes Behrens wonderful Empress (Paris 1980!) I also had the fortune to hear Rysanek in this when I was a young man.

One of the most sophisticated singers around at the moment. In her youth she was utterly radiant, and she has kept her voice extremely well. Sometimes she makes slightly odd sounds, and the bird like top notes are often very disconnected from the middle, but I have seen her do so many gorgeous things live, and I admire her navigating her flaws to produce artistically beautiful, deeply felt , yet utterly unsentimental results.

DIVINE. You can't imagine how many times I listened to acts 2 and 3 of this recording (I couldn't find act 1...). I instantly fell in love with Anne Schwanewilms... In other parts Evelyn Herlitzius takes your breath away! And the orchestra! For me only the recording with Hildegarde Behrens compares with this, eternal one. Schwanewilms is very magical. I looked out for her other recordings and... Isn't her voice Callas of our generation? She steels the stage in Electra, in Meistersinger, like Callas in Barbiere or Andrea Chenier. It happens when she just does her thing, thanks to her imperfect voice, that makes it truer than life.

@LohengrinO She was the only one, I know. Just something in Schwanewilms resembles Callas. I mean, listening to her I am dreaming about Callas singing that. I wish she had recorded some complete Strauss and Wagner operas...

I suggest you seek out the dvd or atream her performance in Schrecker’s Die Gezeiten! Also, Krenek’s Karl V in ehich she has an awesome and pivotal cameo appearance, and on Dutch National Orchestra’s website of Haitink’s 60th anniversary where she singa Berg 7 early songs ans Mahler 4.

@RichardWagner-hi4zn you're right! We are very lucky to have at least that one. And the Liebestod. What a loss that Callas didn't record a complete Valkiria she performed on stage... But personally I am dreaming about her interpretation of the Isolde love duet from the 2nd act, and Isolde internal conflict from act 1. And her rendition of Brunnhilde's love duets in Siegried and Gotterdammerung, and her immolation. And her Daphne, Keiserin, Ariadna, Elektra, Salome... When I'm thinking about it, I almost hear it in her voice and spirit. Her Kundry is so much and so little... Like her 2nd act of Tosca: what a loss that she, SHE didn't record film operas... I mean, I'm just dreaming. 😌

Find her live Schrecker Die Gezeitneten on dvd! Also, a fabulous convert version on Naxos label of Berg Wozzeck. Many live recordings- Elektra also an excellent Rosenkavalier, although not very good partners. Her numerous studio recordings of song and concert repertoire are superb.
