In this scene, the woman wants to send the little girl back to the orphanage, a dreadful place in the 19th century, because she is a girl and they expected a boy to the farm work. She fights for a place she could call home, for some happiness. You and I, in her situation, would probably have said the same thing to try to reverse the decision.
