I had one back in the 80"s.. He was an awesome dog. I called him Bud the Wonder Dog for so many reasons. He went 14 years and my every free moment was Dog Time. We went everywhere together, traveled, camped, hiked, fished, everywhere together. You couldn't ask for a better working herding dog than my Bud. I think of him every day, RIP

My Malinois is also a great companion. He mum is the Malinois with glasses on in the early part of this video. She is by wife's side every moment of the day. Beautiful breed if you want a loyal and faithful constant companion. They are like velcro and are very affectionate, which isn't always mentioned.

I rescued a Malinois X about three years ago. Somebody left her on the streets and when I saw her in the shelter, I knew immediately that I had to get her out of there. She's quite a handful but I don't regret it for a second. She's the most lovely creature I've ever known.

I got one from the pound about 6 weeks ago. He was on the "we've been here too long" wall, aka we're got to have to kill him, if you don't take him. A handful for the fist 36 hours, and now he's just the sweetest, most mellow dog, unless you're prey. When people see a 70 lb, black dog coming at them on the sidewalk they tend to cross the street. If they believe me when I tell them, "He's super friendly."; they're so surprised to find he's just a big love bug with people.

@@thetitaniumcranium my husband and I were contacted by a rescue that had given us a female years ago. The rescue had this 10 month old MalX puppy dumped on her from an elderly lady that picked him up from a shelter and had no idea of what she was getting. His separation anxiety has eased, but I'm sure the intelligence and drive got the better of her, as well. When we're out and about, Finn is curious and loves attention from people, but BALL IS LIFE. He will chase that all day and night if he can. He has the demeanor of a GSD when out, but his drives kick in when its something he loves. My husband and I intended to foster, but, we failed pretty quickly. Our GSD-Bully loves having a buddy to play with, but he's lost his Labradoodle girlfriend because she loves the ball as much as Finn does.

I have a GSD and my brother has 2 along with an ex uk military Belgian mali X that has been on active service in Afghanistan. What a dog. Took me 3 years to gain his trust when my brother rescued him and he petrified me. Once i got his trust omg the dog soldier had a loving heart and he won my heart. He sadly had to pts 3 weeks ago as he was riddled with arthritis from his service and he had a cruciate injury on both back legs, but we got him to 13 yrs old and although the GSD is my lifelong passion the Maligator is a phenomenal creature. Not a dog for the lazy type of walker!!!

Sad news mate, but 13 is an excellent age for a service dog. They look after our soldiers so well. Our Malinois' mum is the dog with the glasses on at the beginning of this video. She is my wife's constant companion. Very affectionate and people focused dog. They are awesome and they form a close bond with their owners for sure. Get yourself another one, there are lots of them out there that need responsible owners like you.

I have 2 German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois crosses. Never heard anyone call them Malinois X before. One of them has unyielding energy and will play with her ball all day, but is capable of relaxing in doors or long car rides without getting upset or frustrated. Do have some anxiety at times but nowhere near as much as a straight Malinois. They are phenomenal pets, very loyal and protective. They have free roam of a farm and love to “herd” goats. One of ours does still have slight hip dysplasia, so it can happen. I would say this video is pretty accurate with my experience.

I've heard from a buddy of mine who was an Army handler and trainer who said anything with the X in the services is considered a cross with working line GSD's. ShepX, MalX, or DutchX
@LaurineVK
@LaurineVK 4 ай бұрын
A lot of the working dogs are crosses at one time. That's how they became the ultimate working dog. We don't care about breeding standards and looks. We just want the ultimate working dogs. However this is the same reason why they are not good "pets" especially for non-active or inexperienced owners. Their drive got so outstanding that they need constant training and a lot, lot more exercise.
@LaurineVK
@LaurineVK 4 ай бұрын
@@Calvinmob681 Although of X's are crosses with GSs. In fact the GS heritage in the beginning contain a lot of Mali en Dutch Shepherd blood. However there is also a vast number of X's that are crossed with other breeds. In our club we have X's with Bouvier d'Ardenne, Rottweiler and Dobermann (one of mine) blood in them. They are not straight crosses but have 3-6 generations back been crossed. The only recent and straight cross I know was a X with a Boereboel. Did not get the cut and won't be breeding.

I have had this mix for nearly 12 years now. He was my first pup. I thought he was a full gsd but he looked more Mali than gsd. And boy was he a handful in those first few years... He wanted to 'eat' everyone and everything. But like any large breed dog it was all about discipline and boundaries and today l have the most loving, sweetest, humongous cuddle buddy who loves all dogs and simply adores his firm favourite people. He will always be wary of strangers but l like that as l feel very safe in his company...he is my soulmate and totally one of a kind! ❤️

Mine is my first dog and he come from a non professional breeder. He was diagnosised with moderate hip dysplasia at 3 months. The perfect cocktail for troubles. We operate him the day of the diagnosis and thank to this, he is now out of problems. We only had minor destruction behaviour when we were not at home a long time until his 2 yo. Except that, correctly raised, like any dogs, and with at minimum a 1 hour walk every day, unleashed in a semi natural environnement, it ends up perfectly. He's soon 6, weight approx 40kg of muscle and has the temperament of the gsd with the extra boost of energy from the mal. Mentally stable, always ready to go everywhere mountain, rivers, forest, beach, rocky shores, little towns, crowdy cities. Always scouting 20m ahead when possible but able to stay at heel on command. He has no problem with humans, and most of other correctly coded dogs. Even if he can be a little cocky with other big male, but obey really well even in this kind of situations. He is really calm at home, very careful, protective and affectionate with my 2 yo boy and my wife. I'm very lucky to have him in my life.

They are laser focused and it’s true, if you were to throw his ball over a cliff, he wouldn’t stop! He loves to work. Once I put him into work mode, he’s like a football player waiting to play the superbowl.

The is a mistake made in the commentary. The Malinois has been tested on intelligence against other dogs at Helsinki this January. They set them seven cognitive and three behavioral tasks. They measured their independence, as well as how fast they went to a human for help after giving them a task they couldn’t solve. The researchers also looked at how good they were at reading human gestures. The Belgian Malinois topped the rankings, with a total of 35 points out of 39. Border collies lived up to their reputation, coming second with 26 points, while the Hovawart got the bronze medal with 25 points. The GSD didn't make the top 5. I've been training these dogs for decades and they are not mindless but their high drive make them do crazy things. And it is their focus that makes them not caring about the environment. It is wrong to state that therefore are not as intelligent. Brought up correctly they will be super confident and calm as long as you meet their needs which is a large investment on your time and knowledge. If you invest them you can take them anywhere and be the envy of everyone. But the average person is not even close to put in the work.

Remy is just an absolutely gorgeous dog! We had a GSD mix, nothing but mutt that was found on the side of the road and rescued. Best dog I ever owned. She lived to be 15+ with no real health issues to speak of until at 15 she had an aggressively growing tumor on her anal gland. And she was on a mild dose of anti-inflammatory medication. When our daughter was born, it was OBVIOUS the GSD was the mother of our child, but she was kind enough to let us raise her. From the day our daughter was born, our GSD would go into our daughter's room to check on her before going into her open crate every night. She tipped us off when we had an issue with the pregnancy that most likely saved my wife and daughter's life, slipped her collar never, until some dog came charging at our daughter while she was younger, and she'd put the dog into a submission and let the other dog know that rushing at us wasn't in the other dogs best interests. In a house with our God-Daughter, our GSD at 65 pounds broke the jaw of a 130 pound mastiff to make sure the kids (about 6 years old) were behind her and safe due to the step father being a loud and angry jerk. Every winter from the time she was 12 we didn't think she would survive the winter because her arthritis would make going up and down stairs a bit harder, but never...she just rubbed some dirt on it and walked it off, and kept on going. Even the day we had to put her down, she wasn't moving much, but if she heard the food bowl rattle, she'd be there promptly and by the time you filled the bowl, there was a puddle of slobber. Even our vet loved our GSD so much that she cried when she told us about the tumor, and she cried when we had to put her down. Miss you Shasta!

Loves to give hugs and just rest her head on you when you sit. Never gets tired. It is true that if you tell her to jump of a 50 store building she will, because that is what you get with malinois - unconditional trust, loyalty and love.

Thanks, Anneka, for this educational video. I've been aware of the Malinois for years but compared to the familiar GSD, I've never seen one in real life. The trainer's explanation of the mental difference between the two was just priceless! I now understand a lot more about a Mali X being unpredictable. It must take generations to get the genetics you want in a breed. Maybe the most important motive for choosing a purebred dog rather than a mixed breed is that you have some idea what it will be like, and personality is more important that the look unless you're planning to show it. The Malinois X might become (generations down the pike) an ideal guard dog that could also be a pet, but, as the man-at-arms said in Game of Thrones, not today. The physical differences between the two breeds are a little subtle in a video, so it's great to have you talk about them. (Still not positive I could tell one from the other in real life). But the mental differences are much more important for someone thinking about owning one.

My girl is 60% gsd 20% mal and 20% dutch. She's got the muscle and strength of a gsd, but the speed and drive of a malinois/dutch shepherd, She packs one hell of a bite and can work for hours when required, but she also got the gsd off switch and has a calmer, more laid back demeanour when not working. She'll gladly lie around the house all day, is great with kids, other dogs and cats, has super great impulse control, but then the second she needs to she goes full throttle. Only problem I would say is that she isn't as agile as a full mal or dutch, but what she lacks in agility she makes up for in strength and temperament. 100% would recommend a dog like this as a working dog.

I don't understand hybrids. If you're looking for a Malinois dog but you're intimidated by his energy, consider a Dutch Shepherd. By creating hybrids, in my opinion, only the backdoor breeding market is turned on. In order to create a breed, a long-term breeding program would be required. Besides, I don't understand why there are episodes about hybrids and there hasn't been an episode about French Shepherd Beauceron yet ;)

They are very much problem solvers, and look right at you when working, playing or they really want to know what you are about to tell. Also, if they want a treat......LOL. But seriously. I am 60 and I have had a lot of good dogs, and my shepherds are sooo much more focused than any other I have had. I have had a Rottweiler, and a few labs. My bf has 2 German Shepards and 1 Malions all 3 are pets at home, not professional trained. All 3 are very loving , never aggressive. However when I came to bf home , she said from 2 rooms away , come in , doors open. So I entered, all 3 of them were right there to meet me, as to see who's is entering my house. I of course felt all blood drained to my toes, was scared to death, my friend said to 3 dogs , that I'm ok to come in twice. All 3 dogs were clam instantly and greeted me w kisses and were not aggressive. They really do listen to their owners and apparently understand human commands innately. But whoa whoa 😳 I was scared within 3 minutes they were laying next my feet and chill...... my Bf is definitely not a dog trainer , just used simple reward and demand on these dogs since they were puppies. Minimal training needed, bc they are very very smart. 👍 . She has 2 kids 6yrs old and the dogs are very sweet with kids, as they see your kids as their kids part of their dog family. I glad to experience how these dogs are, and I've decided this is the dog for me. And NO they don't need a 3 mile walk a day !. My bf has big yard , 1 acre, but yes they are out in yard most day .

My puppy is 1/2 Malinois, 1/4 German Sheppard and 1/4 Rotty. She is a very sweet 100 lb girl who loves to chew like a Malinois and needs at least two hours of walk and play each day. I usually walk her for 45 minutes in the morning and then take her to an off leash park in the afternoon for an hour of play and walk her for 45 minutes in the evening. As long as we do this, she is perfectly calm at home. She has never damaged anything in our house. She is so smart and is enrolled in her 5th training class because she needs the mental stimulation. The only problem is that if she gets the scent of coyotes she'll take off after it and can't hear me. She hates coyotes but loves every dog and person that she meets. But, one day I was walking her and this crazy guy, who apparently hates dogs, charged at us. I was surprised how her protection instinct kicked in and he stopped in his tracks when she lunged, barked and growled. She turns 2 on St. Patrick's Day. She gets lots of compliments from people about her looks. One day, Kali leaned against this women at the park. The woman patted her on her side and said, "Your a beautiful girl, and sturdy, too!" I'm fortunate that I have the time to spend with her. Even though only half Malinois, I wouldn't recommend a dog like Kali for someone who doesn't have the time to exercise her body and stimulate her brain. She probably would tear the house apart if we left her home alone all day, day after day without proper exercise. When necessary, we leave her with friends who have dogs.

Funny people are getting these dogs assuming they are going to get the bits of each breed that they like! Its a mix breed, not a Malinois X and therefor everything about them is luck of the draw and unstable. I'm glad they actually mentioned that in this video, unlike literally every other cross breed video.

Far too wired for "family" settings. Any wired dog like a Mall needs work, they need experienced handlers. I know of one "X", it lives with a pure Alsation. Compared to the Alsation the cross is a beserker. The Alsation is a pure delight, the cross has to be put away if people visit. We have seen some serious dog incidents in the UK resulting in deaths. As a dog lover I do not wish to see certain dogs banned by government, but some crosses are just a bridge too far.

I really think this is not the way to go, it seems to me that a malinois is underestimated regarding thinking for itself or being a reliable easy-going family dog. You just have to put the time in. The most common mistake with a malinois in my opinion is that most trainers overdoing the training and kind of break the dog to get to 'the result'. I own a 4 year old working line mal and she became the most versatile dog I've ever had. And the most interesting thing is that she's still a free spirited dog and will overthink her actions if necessary. She comes out a really heavy police dog breeding line and not a dog that was easy-going. But you'll get what you're putting in, time, time, time and patience. A German shepherd is another breed. If you're looking for a quieter dog that's ok, it's a lot less work. A well trained and behaving malinois is just another story. I think this video doesn't do justice to the malinois breed.

I´ve got GSD and Malinois for dog sports (IGP - tracking, obedience, protection) and in training sometimes meet this cross. Lets say, they were all loose canon balls and woulnd´t even dream of having one. 😂 After having GSD and wanting a little bit faster dog (plus heart problems and elbow displasia) was a Malinois a sure choice - but knowing how many of them are crazies, was reaaally carefully chosing a breeding pair of my Fredy. Got lucky and got a great, calmer Malinois. Still needs work and is great in sports, but when I don´t have time or am ill, is a perfect cuddly companion. 🥰

She is a little girl (26kg), solid black beauty, but moves like the wind and she looks to you like no other I've ever had and rarely seen, high drive but never touched a thing that wasn't hers. Not sure I'll be able to ever have a dog that doesn't have that next level intelligence. I just recently got into breeding German Shepherds and I am a mother with a family myself. I personally have had the experience as an individual and with a family with these dogs. I will not sell any of my puppies to a first time dog owner or family if they don't agree to training courses with me first or if they have doubts about if they will have the time needed for the care of my puppies.
